“My sneaky and dear husband @ryanpierswilliams surprised me with a zoom birthday party yesterday! I have to be honest, America ferrera husband seen a million of these posted and thought ‘how could that be fun?’. But as you can see from these pictures, I was completely overwhelmed with joy & love! The new year is off to a great start for actress America Ferrera. That’s because she and her husband, Ryan Piers Williams, will be welcoming their first child together this year. Ferrera announced the news on Instagram.

Alongside a photo of she and her husband donning novelty “2018” glasses and holding up a onesie, Ferrera wrote, “We’re welcoming one more face to kiss in 2018! Wishing #MasBesos in the New Year! #babybesos #HappyNewYear.”

The couple has been together for 12 years, having met when Williams cast Ferrera in his student film at the University of Southern California. They wed in 2011.

“We kind of connected from the get-go on that professional level and that was something that really drew us to each other, a shared passion for what we do and our work,” Ferrera told People after their engagement.

The pair may already have a leg up on the whole pregnancy and parenting thing, considering Ferrera likened the experience of making a movie with her husband to that of childbirth.

Williams wrote and directed “The Dry Land,” which Ferrera both produced and acted in. Ferrera told People the film was “certainly his baby, and I feel like I’ve been here to get to witness it. It’s a little bit like he had the pregnancy and I’m holding his hand thorough Lamaze.”

Based on Ferrara’s Instagram, it looks like they are a couple who also share a commitment to fitness, as she often shares photos of them exercising together.

Rivaling the cuteness of her relationship with her hubby, though, is the continuing friendship that Ferrara maintains with her “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” costars.

Ferrara shared a america ferrera husband of the crew, which includes Blake Lively, Amber Tamblyn and Alexis Bledel, on Jan. 2 with the caption: “Starting the New Year off with blessings from my Sisterhood.”

The four actresses starred together in the 2005 and 2008 “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” films and are still tight more than a decade later.

Aside from their shared love of film and fitness, Ferrara and her husband have also collaborated on political activism, founding the organization Harness with Wilder Verrama after the 2016 election.

“It’s about convening people with front line activists to hear the authentic stories about what’s happening in our most vulnerable communities,” Ferrara explained during an appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” in May 2017. “Right now, I think we’re all feeling this unprecedented energy—people want to take action and take part, but it’s so overwhelming that you don’t know where to begin.”

The actress is also part of the Time’s Up movement, which was just launched by a team of Hollywood female heavyweights such as Shonda Rhimes, Eva Longoria and Reese Witherspoon. The movement aims to end the culture of harassment that has pervaded the film and other industries through advocacy, legal action and fundraising.

Despite all the other projects that Ferrara and Williams are involved in, we bet parenthood will be this couple’s most exciting collaboration yet!

America Ferrera is celebrating her "sweet 36."

While people continue to practice social distancing, celebrating birthdays with your friends and extended family has been ruled out. But even so, people have found creative ways to keep the party going.

On Sunday morning, the Superstoreactress took to Instagram to share that her "sneaky and dear" husband Ryan Piers Williams surprised her with a "zoom birthday party" on her birthday April 18.

"I have to be honest, I've seen a million of these posted and thought 'how could that be fun?' But as you can see from these pictures, I was completely overwhelmed with joy & love! I had no idea how much I wanted to be with my community and to see the faces I love so much!" she wrote, alongside pictures of herself in front of her birthday cakes and Zoom party.

She went on, "@ryanpierswilliams you turned my quarantine birthday into one of the most joyous and memorable!"

"You filled me with love and cake and ended it with a virtual dance party!!" she added. "You are the best. So grateful for community and friendship and love. #birthdaygirl #besthusband #virtual #surprise #danceparty #togetherapart."

On the day of her actual birthday, Ferrera also shared a picture of herself in front of her birthday decorations at home and another photo of herself walking with her son Sebastian Piers Williams. She wrote, "Sweet 36! This Birthday Gal is so happy and grateful for all the love and friendship and well wishes! Happy Birthday to all my fellow April 18thers! I'll be spending the day raking with my boss (swipe for evidence). #birthday #grateful #36 #aries."

Friends including Reese Witherspoon, Brie LarsonOctavia SpencerAbbi Jacobson and Natalie Portman all wished her a happy birthday in the comments.

But perhaps the best birthday post of all was that from Ferrera's former Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants co-star Amber Tamblyn.

The fellow 36-year-old posted a video of herself twerking for Ferrera in honor of her birthday  (or as she jokingly says in the video "Happy Birthday America Beyoncé Ferrera Knowles"). She wrote, "Happy birthday to the only woman in the world I would break a tit and hip for. I love you, Ms. Ferrera. I wish we were doing this in person, at 11pm (which is like 2am for moms in their late 30's), at some amazing club on the Lower East Side, screaming at the top of our lungs with joy. Someday soon. I promise. #BirthdayGirl #QuarantineMadness #WhiteGirlFriend #IAmSoSorry #SendMeAllTheIcePacks #CantFeelMyButt."

Ferrera commented back, "This is all I've ever wanted!!! I love you!!"

America Ferrera Met Her Husband In Such A Hollywood Way

Superstore actor America Ferrera ended 2017 with an epic announcement on her Instagram account. On Dec. 31, Ferrera announced that she is expecting her first child with husband Ryan Piers Williams in 2018. The couple has come a long way from how America Ferrera and husband Ryan Piers Williams met back in the day. According to People, Ferrera and Williams first met in a very Hollywood way: He cast her in a student film while he was attending the University of Southern California's renowned film school. Ferrera is also a USC alum; the Emmy winner graduated in 2013 with a degree in international relations.

According to Williams' IMDb page, the student film that Ferrera and Williams likely met during is a short called Muertas, which was released in 2007 and shot in Texas and Mexico. The description of the film on IMDb is as follows: "A young American journalist attempts to piece together the fractured memories of a love lost amidst the ongoing Juarez, Mexico murders." Williams directed, wrote, and starred in the film as Ethan. Ferrera played the role of Rebecca. According to IMDb, the movie was screened at the San Diego Latino Film Festival, AFI Dallas Film Festival, and the Austin Film Festival throughout 2007.

Even though the film premiered in 2007, it looks like Ferrera and Williams probably met a few years before the film was released to the world. On June 27, 2017, Ferrera posted a video of her and Williams celebrating their 12th anniversary together in Iceland. According to that math, it sounds like Ferrera and Williams began dating in 2005 — the same year she starred in the first Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie and one year before she'd lead the ABC series Ugly Betty.People reported that Ferrera and Williams became engaged in June 2010 and got married in June 2011. “We kind of connected from the get-go on that professional level and that was something that really drew us to each other, a shared passion for what we do and our work,” Ferrera told People in 2010.

Muertas isn't the only time Ferrera and Williams have worked together on set. In 2010, Ferrera starred and produced in Williams' feature film The Dry Land opposite Melissa Leo, Jason Ritter, and June Diane Raphael. Written and directed by Williams, the film was about a solider who returns home from war and it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. At the Los Angeles premiere of the film in July 2010, Ferrera told People at that the movie was “certainly is his baby, and I feel like I’ve been here to get to witness it...It’s a little bit like he had the pregnancy and I’m holding his hand through Lamaze.”

Then in 2014, Ferrera and Williams starred together in his feature drama X/Y about a group of friends living in New York City. The movie was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the Tribeca Film Festival. "...We love story telling," Ferrera told Latina magazine about working with her husband on the movie. "And to get to jump into it and know that the person who knows you the best and who has your best interest in mind has your back the whole time. We were able to do that for each other."

Ferrera and Williams' collaborations have since branched out into activism. After the 2016 election, the couple founded activism organization Harness with Wilmer Valderrama. "It's about convening people with front line activists to hear the authentic stories about what's happening in our most vulnerable communities," she said during an appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers in May 2017. "Right now, I think we're all feeling this unprecedented energy — people want to take action and take part, but it's so overwhelming that you don't know where to begin."

As frequent collaborators, Ferrera and Williams' new addition may be their most exciting yet in 2018.

America Ferrera

American actress

America Georgina Ferrera[2] (; born April 18, 1984)[3] is an American actress, producer, and director. Born in Los Angeles to Honduran parents, Ferrera developed an interest in acting at a young age, performing in several stage productions at her school. She made her feature film debut in 2002 with the comedy-drama Real Women Have Curves, earning praise for her performance. Ferrera has won many awards including an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award among others.

Ferrera achieved modest success early in her career with roles in films such as the Disney original Gotta Kick It Up! (2002) and the drama The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (2005); the latter earned her the Imagen Award Best Actress and her first nomination at the ALMA Awards. She undertook television roles including the eponymous role on the ABC comedy-drama Ugly Betty (2006–2010). She was praised for playing the protagonist of the series, Betty Suarez, and won Best Actress Awards at various award ceremonies in 2007 including the Golden Globe Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the Primetime Emmy Award, the first for a Latina woman in the category.

Ferrera's other notable film roles include the drama The Dry Land (2010), the romantic comedy Our Family Wedding (2010), and the crime drama End of Watch (2012). She provided the voice of Astrid Hofferson in the How to Train Your Dragon franchise, including the three films and the television series Dreamworks Dragons. She co-produced and starred as Amy Sosa in the NBC comedy series Superstore (2015–2021).

Time magazine named her one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2007.

Early life and education

Ferrera, the youngest of six children, was born in Los Angeles, California.[4] Her parents, América Griselda Ayes and Carlos Gregorio Ferrera, were originally from Tegucigalpa, Honduras, and immigrated to the United States in the mid-1970s.[5] Ferrera has stated that she has Lenca ancestry.[6] Her mother worked as the director of the housekeeping staff for one of the Hilton Hotels,[7] and stressed the importance of higher education.[8] When she was 7, her parents divorced and her father returned to Honduras.[9] Ferrera was estranged from her father when he died there in 2010.[10]

Ferrera was raised in the Woodland Hills section of Los Angeles, where she attended Calabash Street Elementary School, George Ellery Hale Middle School and El Camino Real High School.[11] From the age of seven, when she landed a small role in a school production of Hamlet, and then when she was 10, the role as the Artful Dodger in Oliver!, Ferrera knew that she wanted to be a performer. Her first play was Romeo and Juliet, and although only in the third grade, she went to the junior high school and auditioned and got the role of the Apothecary.[12] She acted in school plays and community theatre in Los Angeles throughout her youth, though with little help from her mother, who insisted that she pursue other interests because she was concerned her daughter would not be treated fairly.[8] Ferrera disliked her first name as a child and went by her middle name, "Georgina", until she began acting professionally.[2]

While at El Camino High School, she took acting lessons at the age of 15 and was able to pay for them by waiting tables and babysitting. She entered the University of Southern California (USC) on a presidential scholarship, double majoring in theatre and international relations. She dropped out to focus on her acting career, but completed her bachelor's degree in May 2013.[13]

Career

Debut and early roles (2002–2005)

In July 2002, Ferrera appeared in her first television movie, Gotta Kick It Up! for The Disney Channel. While at a theatre program at Northwestern University that same year,[14] she made her feature movie debut in Real Women Have Curves. Ferrera followed this with roles in television (Touched by an Angel).[15] She also appeared in the movie Plainsong, based on the novel by Kent Haruf, which also featured Aidan Quinn and Rachel Griffiths. Ferrera played a pregnant teenager, Victoria Roubideaux, who has been kicked out of her mother's house; she is taken in by two kindly brothers who live alone on a farm.[16] In the 2005 film How the Garcia Girls Spent Their Summer, she starred as Bianca, a 17-year-old third-generation Mexican-American who is disgusted with the boys in her neighborhood but finds romance with a boy from a neighboring town. In 2006, she appeared in the short film 3:52, which won the Audience Award at the San Diego Women Film Festival. Later that year, she featured in the movie Steel City, which received nominations at the Film Independent Spirit Awards and the Sundance Film Festival.[17] In December 2005, she appeared in the Off-Broadway play Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead, directed by Trip Cullman.

Breakthrough and rise to fame (2006–2010)

Ferrera at the 2010 Voice Awards

In 2006, Ferrera landed the lead role of Betty Suarez in ABC's new comedy-drama Ugly Betty, an adaptation of the successful Colombian telenovela Yo soy Betty, la fea, in which Ferrera portrays a girl whom her peers find extremely unattractive, thus the series title. As Betty Suarez, Ferrera wears braces, has bushy eyebrows and a disheveled wig, and cosmetics and clothing intended to downplay her own looks, in contrast to most of the "glammed up" characters; Ferrera herself invented the term "Bettification" to describe the process of creating her onscreen persona.[18] In 2007, Ferrera won numerous accolades winning the "triple crown" for her performance in the series; she won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy, the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series, and the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, becoming the first Latina woman to win the Outstanding Lead Actress Award.[19][20][21]

In the wake of her Golden Globe win, Ferrera was congratulated by Hilda L. Solis in the United States House of Representatives and was commended for "helping to break down stereotypes and provide a role model for young Latinas".[22]Time included Ferrera in their 2007 list of the 100 most influential people in the world.[23] Also in 2007, Ferrera won Imagen Foundation's Creative Achievement Award.[24] Ferrera starred as Carmen in the 2005 film The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, and reprised the role in 2008's The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. Among other film work, she supplied the voice of Astrid in the hit animated film How to Train Your Dragon (2010). She also appeared in The Dry Land which premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival[25] and ran at the Dallas International Film Festival where it won the top prize in the Filmmaker Award for Best Narrative Feature.[26]

Post-Ugly Betty projects and Superstore (2011–present)

Ferrera made her London stage debut on November 7, 2011, playing Roxie Hart in the musical Chicago in London's West End.[27] In 2012, Ferrera was featured in the four-hour documentary Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, which premiered on PBS October 1 and 2, 2012.[28] The series introduces women and girls living in very difficult circumstances and struggling to challenge them. The Half the Sky PBS TV series is produced by Show of Force along with Fugitive Films. Ferrera starred alongside David Cross and Julia Stiles in the dark comedy It's a Disaster, which premiered at the 2012 Los Angeles Film Festival and had a limited commercial release on April 12, 2013.[29]

On May 17, 2013, ABC announced that Ferrera was cast in a limited-run telenovela titled Pedro & Maria, a modern-day take on Romeo and Juliet set in Washington, D.C. The series had been in development at MTV since 2010 with Ferrera serving as a director on the project, which would have interactive participation online content from viewers.[30] ABC later decided not to move forward with the series. On March 16, 2015, Ferrera was added to the cast of the upcoming NBC sitcom Superstore, portraying Amy, a 10-year veteran floor supervisor at a superstore named Cloud 9. In addition to her main role, Ferrera has co-production duties as well.[31] After NBC had initially announced a sixth season of the series, the network revealed on February 28, 2020, that Ferrera would be departing the series at the end of the fifth season citing new projects and spending time with family.[32] Due to the COVID-19 pandemic shutting down Superstore's fifth season with one episode left to film, her departure was delayed into season 6 in order to give her character's arc a proper closure.[33][34] On March 10, 2021, NBC announced that Ferrera would return for the show's one-hour series finale.[35]

In February 2019, it was announced that Ferrera would be credited as an executive producer and director for the Netflix comedy-drama series Gentefied.[36][37] The series premiered on February 21, 2020.[38]

In February 2021, it was announced that Ferrera would make her feature length directorial debut with I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, based on the young adult novel of the same name by Erika L. Sánchez. Adapted by Linda Yvette Chávez, the film will be a co-production with Netflix, Anonymous Content, Aevitas Creative Management and MACRO.[39]

'Superstore' Star America Ferrera Reveals Second Pregnancy With Husband Ryan Piers Williams in Sweet New Year's Photo

Actress America Ferrera unveiled a big announcement for the New Year. Tuesday evening, the former Ugly Betty star posted a pic to Instagram with her husband, Ryan Piers Williams, and their child. She also took the opportunity to reveal she's pregnant with the couple's second child.

"Welcoming Baby #2 in 2020! Happy New Year from our wild & growing bunch," Ferrera wrote in the caption. The couple had their first child, whose nickname is "Baz," back in March of 2018. With a second on the way, several of the actress's colleagues congratulated her on the news.

"This is the most exciting news," wrote Reese Witherspoon, while Judith Light called them "the sweetest family." Casting agent Karrie Martin added that she was sending the family "all the love and blessings during this beautiful time."

In addition to starring as Amy on the NBC workplace comedy Superstore, Ferrera has also transitioned into producing the series. While attending the Television Critics Association winter press tour last January, she explained the challenges and opportunities that come with working behind the camera.

"It's much more a relationship and an ongoing conversation with Justin about the creativity of the show, where we are going, where the characters are going, what the longer arcs are, but also just what's happening with the show?" Ferrera said. "Are we reaching who we want to reach? Are there things that we want to talk about that we haven't gotten to talk about? Are there audiences and people who we want to get the show in front of that we haven't yet had the opportunity to?"

At the same TCA panel, Ferrera also talked about the character of Betty Suarez and whether she'd see the light of day again through a possible Ugly Betty reunion. Despite the show's enduring popularity over the years, the news wasn't exactly positive on that front.

"No, there haven't been more conversations of a reunion," Ferrera said. Though she didn't exactly kill all hope for the show getting a second life. "I love Betty and it would be so interesting to go back and try to play her again from where I am now and who I am now."

The possibility of an Ugly Betty reunion started in 2016 during a cast reunion panel at the ATX Television Festival in Austin, Texas. Especially after the consensus was that everyone there would be interested in a revival of the series.

The couple are clearly fans of festive baby announcements, having broken the news on New Year’s Eve in 2017 that they were expecting their first child.

For that announcement, America gushed: ‘We’re welcoming one more face to kiss in 2018!

‘Wishing you #MásBesos in the New Year! #babybesos#HappyNewYear.’
