Online and mobile banking tips for beginners

This blog was originally posted on April 3, 2020 and was updated on May 5, 2020.

If you’ve been on the fence about doing your banking online or through a mobile app, now is a good time to get started as financial institutions change their branch hours during the COVID-19 pandemic. Online and mobile banking allow you to handle your finances from the comfort of home.

Begin online banking with a few steps

As long as you have a computer or smartphone with access to the Internet and an account with a bank or credit union account eligible for internet banking, it’s easy to get started.

  1. Gather your account numbers

Your account numbers should be on your paper statement. Your account number will also be on the bottom of your checks or deposit slips. They are needed to enroll your account.

  2. Find your bank or credit union’s website

Look on one of your paper statements or on the back of your debit or credit card to find the website, rather than googling or clicking on links in an email or text. If you visit your bank’s website from your smartphone, you may be prompted to download the bank or credit ww bank of america online banking mobile app that you can use from your phone.

  3. Register for access to your bank or credit union's online banking platform

The first time you visit, you’ll follow the prompts to create an online account. You will answer questions to prove it’s really you, choose a username and password, and set up security features and preferences. Be sure to create strong passwords and do not use the same password for all accounts. Don’t use information such as addresses and birthdays in your passwords. For more tips on how to create strong passwords read more on the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) blog.

  4. Log in and take a tutorial

If it’s offered by your bank or credit union to learn your way ww bank of america online banking the platform.

What can you do with online and mobile app banking?

Most transactions can be done online or through your financial institution’s mobile app on your smartphone.

  • Check your account balances online at any time. You now can catch errors such as unauthorized activity earlier – without having to wait for your paper statement. You usually can notify your bank or credit union account of errors through the online or mobile banking app or chat functions.
  • Often, you can see deposits and charges that are pending, meaning they have not posted to your account yet. Note that for pending debit card transactions, the amounts you see may not be the same as the final amount that posts to your account. Be sure to check your bank’s or credit union’s funds availability policy before assuming that pending deposits are available for making payments or withdrawals.
  • Consider whether you would like to continue to receive paper versions of your periodic statements and other documents. Your bank or credit union may prompt you to go paperless while you set up online halter high neck one piece swimsuit banks and credit unions allow you to set up automatic notifications to help you manage your account and alert you when any of the following happen: a direct deposit is received, a large payment is charged, your balance falls below a certain amount, your account is in overdraft, and more. Often, bank and credit union online portals offer you the ability to sign up to get these alerts via text, email, or both. These alerts can help ensure you stay informed without having to log in to your account several times a day.
  • Most banks and credit unions will allow you to deposit checks using your smartphone and a mobile app. You might not be able to deposit all types of checks this way, so check with your bank or credit union if you have any questions. The mobile app makes it easy to deposit a check in a few steps:
    1. Download your bank or credit union’s app on your smartphone if you haven’t already.
    2. Understand any rules your bank or credit union has about mobile check deposit.
    3. Follow the directions in the mobile app to deposit the check
    4. Hold onto the check for several days after deposit until you are sure it has posted to your account meaning that it is no longer pending and any holds your institution has placed have expired.
    5. Destroy the check once it’s cleared by shredding it or tearing or cutting it up.
  • If you need to transfer money between accounts, or even between financial institutions, your online banking or mobile app likely offers you options to do that. Make sure you understand the terms and conditions of your transfer and double check that you are using the correct account and routing numbers when making any transfers.
  • There’s a good chance your financial institution offers a way to send money person to person, too. Before you use any mobile payment services, check out our best practices guide to make sure your transactions are done safely. You can test it out by transferring a small amount, like a dollar, back and forth. That way you’ll be sure your money goes where you want and you receive money you’re owed.
  • Instead of writing checks and mailing them, you can pay most bills online or through the mobile app for your financial institution.
  • Banking online or through your mobile device is secure, as long as you follow best practices for keeping the information on your mobile device safe. Your financial institution may offer additional services to help you keep your account safe, including turning off your debit card if you suspect fraud. Check with your bank or credit union to learn more about additional protections they may offer.

How do I get help with online banking?

If you run into any issues, ask for help! If you need specific guidance, contact your bank or credit union directly. Customer service associates are available by phone, online chat, or video in some cases. The financial institution staff will help you set up your account and answer questions. They will also help you figure out what you can and cannot do online or through their app. Please note that during this pandemic crisis, many bank and credit union call centers are experiencing high call volumes and may be delayed in responding to inquiries.

Helping someone else bank

If you are a financial caregiver, either in a traditional formal role of managing someone else’s money or on an informal basis, speak with the person you’re helping and their financial institution to determine what you ugi central penn gas bill pay and cannot do. Keep in mind that even during the current national health emergency, you’ll have to follow all of the required steps to have access to another person’s account. That could include having documents prepared, notarized, or other more formal steps – and it could take some time due to the large volume of consumer inquiries financial institutions are receiving. Our Managing Someone Else’s Money guides can be helpful.

Some banks and credit unions offer “view-only” online banking, which lets you see what’s going on without having access to the money. If you are a fiduciary, you may be able to gain online access to accounts and help manage money while observing social distancing or quarantine practices.

If you do need to bank in person, call or visit your bank or credit union’s website to see if your branch is closed, offering special hours for older customers or members, offering services in person by appointment, or serving customers through the drive-thru windows only.

The Beginning by, Me.

When I finally received my Ww bank of america online banking, it was time to try banking on line. I downloaded this app & began a totally new adventure. As time provides, I’ve been slowly delving into what I thought would be an amazing experience where banking and bill pay would become easily completed with minimal effort. Wrong, not entirely true. At this point I am frustrated. To simply pay my bills every month, without fumbles, less stress and time, I find out from ALL options, I’m not able to do online banking to pay aforementioned bills because I don’t have the necessary accounts available to do so. I have checking, savings and a fairly healthy CD.I wonder, why can’t I bank online? Why does it say I’m unable to use this app for online banking because I haven’t the accounts to do so? Huh? What? I’m so confused! I can’t locate the forms I need either.I want to be sure when I pass, my daughter receives all my monies from these “Appropriately Established” accounts! I’ve called 3 times to have the forms mailed to me.to no avail and I’m unable to pay my bills online. I’m disabled, hooked up to oxygen, unable to go into the bank as I bank of america business banking login when I called. I was told to open online banking that that would help me handle everything from home. If I figure it out one day, you’ll receive the 5th star. Take care my friend.

BofA Scam

Ok I don’t know if I’m talking about the bank of the Benk’s employees. I walked into the bank branch the other day to make a deposit and the teller convinced me to talk to a small business representative and so I did. The business representative explained to how easy and worth was for me to open a line of credit and before I could think they had me filling an application. On the conversation I explained all my life to the financing agent and said that I did not want a hard inquiry in my credit for no reason. She told me the for her experience and my record with the bank it would not be a problem to get the line of credit. I trusted her and went for it.
After 7 days an other agent called me for an interview over the phone and she denied me based on my records; recored that they had access all along. So my review here is for you to be aware of shifting employees in branch who want to make a little extra with total disregard with people’s life. They don’t care if your credit will be damaged or your time wasted all they care is that they make they percentual extra money. Or it could be the bofa system too that operates on forcing them to screw clients with the complete disregard with damaging their personal life.
So it could be the bank, the employees or both.

Hello ghridb, We regret to hear that you are dissatisfied with the service experience at BofA. Within this app review section, we are here to assist with your mobile app related needs and functionality. We strive to provide you with a 5 star app experience. Thanks for the review! -Ashlyn

Auto payment

Your auto payment feature is unacceptable. For some accounts you do not allow payment of statement balance or minimum payment amount which makes it impossible to automatically pay each month to avoid a late payment. You actually require a dollar amount and that can result in an overpayment which we then have to request to be refunded. That did happen to me. So I shut it off and as a result I was charged a late payment for being a few days late paying because I could not access my account to pay an unexpected charge that went through the account. Which leads to my next complaint about the website.

I could not remember my password and therefore could not get a reset as I did not have my credit card available. Instead of allowing reset like other credit card companies by answering chosen questions, you make us enter the account number which I did not have because I could not access my statements which are delivered online. Since I did not have my card with me, I had to call in. having to try to call back multiple times as your lines are very busy. By the time I was able to get a person on the phone, I was 3 or 4 days late paying and you had charged me a late payment. I always pay on time. You have years of history with me paying on time, yet your customer service refused to refund the charge even though I have years of history paying on time and only was late because I could not get into the account.

Your online experience it terrible.

Hello skier6200, thanks for the detailed review. We'll pass this feedback along to our design team. We strive to improve our app based on user feedback. Please keep an eye out for future app updates to enhance your mobile banking experience. -Ashlyn

Best Online Banks Of December 2021

Along with paying 0.20% APY on balances of $100 and over, Bank5 Connect’s checking product offers My Rewards. This no-cost program lets you earn cash back when you use your Bank5 Connect debit card at participating retailers. It’s relatively rare to find a checking account that offers both interest and cash back.

Generally, Bank5 Connect offers a winning combination of attractive rates and low minimum deposit requirements across its products. It requires only $10 to open a savings or checking account and a relatively easy-to-meet $500 minimum deposit requirement to open a CD. There are no monthly maintenance fees on any of its accounts.

The bank requires that you maintain a minimum daily balance of $100 to earn interest on savings or checking. But regardless of your balance—whether it’s $1 or $1 million—it insures all of your deposits. On top of the usual $250,000 of FDIC insurance, it offers coverage through the Massachusetts Depositors Insurance Fund (DIF), and there are no limits, in the event of a bank failure. Coverage is automatic and free and there are no residency requirements.

Customers of the bank get access to thousands of surcharge-free ATMs through the SUM Network. Plus, Bank5 Connect never charges for using an out-of-network ATM. It even reimburses up to $15 per statement cycle for ATM surcharges from other banks.

Read our full Bank5 Connect review.

Details

Bank5 Connect offers a checking account, savings account and CDs with terms from six months to 36 months. The mobile app gets 5 stars out of 5 on the App Store (notably, it only has 38 total ratings) and 4.2 out of 5 stars on Google Play (194 ratings). Residents of Massachusetts and Rhode Island are not eligible to open an account at Bank5 Connect, but they are eligible to open an eAccess Checking account, eAccess Savings account and CDs—which all have the same minimum requirements—with BankFive, the community bank based in Massachusetts. Rates at BankFive may be higher or lower than rates at Bank5 Connect, depending on the product you choose.

With the My Rewards program, the more you use your debit card, the more offers you are likely to receive—offers are matched to your spending habits. Cash-back offers are available for limited time frames and you must activate them within the app before using your connected card to redeem the offer. You’re enrolled in the program automatically when you open a checking account.

Pros & Cons

  • Low minimum deposit requirements across products
  • Competitive rates
  • Highly rated mobile app
  • Very few fees
  • Additional insurance on top of FDIC coverage through DIF
  • Must maintain $100 minimum balance to earn APY for checking or savings
  • Doesn’t offer a money market account
  • Doesn’t offer 24/7 customer service

Online and mobile banking tips for beginners

Leer en Español

By Erin Scheithe –

If you visit your bank’s website from your smartphone, you may be prompted to download the bank or credit union’s mobile app that you can use from your phone.

If it’s offered by your bank or credit union to learn your way around the platform.

Your bank or credit union may prompt you to go paperless while you set up online banking.
  • Most banks and credit unions allow you to set up automatic notifications to help you manage your account and alert you when any of the following happen: a direct deposit is received, a large payment is charged, your balance falls below a certain amount, your account is in overdraft, and more.

If you are a financial caregiver, either in a traditional formal role of managing someone else’s money or on an informal basis, speak with the person you’re helping and their financial institution to determine what you can and cannot do.
