Jonathan Banks of 'Breaking Bad' appears in '70s period PSA

There’s something different about Johnny’s girlfriend Judy. She seems older, more mature — and she’s suddenly gotten a whole lot better at bowling. But when Judy asks Johnny if he notices anything new, he’s not quite sure how to respond: “No… You got rouge on?” And then Judy lays down a bombshell — “I got my first period today!”

“So what’s the big deal?” Johnny replies, faking nonchalance.

“It means that blood is flowing out of my uterus!” Judy exclaims.

Yes, the following PSA from 1974 — charmingly titled Linda’s Film on Menstruation — is hilarious enough on its own. But the video goes from amusing to amazing when you realize that Johnny isn’t just anybody — he’s played by Jonathan Banks, a.k.a. Breaking Bad‘s stoic, certified badass fixer Mike. Skip over to around 1:10 and see for yourself:

This period piece — sorry, couldn’t resist — has the distinction of being Banks’ first onscreen role. When Vulture asked him about it earlier this week, the Emmy nominee laughed: “No good deed goes unpunished,” he said. “Years ago, my friend George Eichen, who was a manager of a summerstock playhouse, said, ‘Will you do this thing?’ I went, ‘Sure.’ And then they go ahead and they post it up there!”

So thank you, George Eichen, for bringing this incredible piece of ridiculata into our lives. Keep watching past Johnny’s glorious debut to catch a detailed explanation of menstruation, as narrated by a triangle-haired cartoon character named Francine.

And, in the interest of fairness, here’s Aaron Paul in an awesome ’90s commercial for Corn Pops:

John Oliver’s latest find: How ‘Breaking Bad’s’ Mike misled teens about menstruation

On “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver has shed light on urgent yet underreported problems, from the epidemic of food waste to crumbling infrastructure.

But in Sunday’s broadcast, Oliver and his research team uncovered something truly unexpected: the role Mike from “Breaking Bad” has played in the sexual miseducation of America’s youth.

Say what? Allow us to explain.

The episode’s main report episode focused on the country’s inconsistent and, as Oliver argued, inadequate sex education practices.

“We tried this week to find out what sex ed looks like in America right now but that turns out to be a surprisingly difficult question to answer. Now in the past, depending on how old you are, sex education may have been little more than watching films like this,” Oliver said, setting up clips from grainy, hilariously bad sex-ed films from the ‘60s and ‘70s.

One particularly baffling film (with the amazingly to-the-point title, “Linda’s Film on Menstruation”) featured a young woman named Judy whose bowling abilities improved dramatically after she got her period for the first time. What, you’ve never heard that old stereotype about “that time of the month” and bowling a 300?

“That is some incredible misinformation. Menstrual blood is not like some uterine HGH that makes you amazing at bowling,” Oliver said. But even more incredible was the fact that her dismayed male companion is played by a young Jonathan Banks -- better known to TV fans as Mike Ehrmantraut, the grizzled former cop turned fixer on “Breaking Bad” and its prequel, “Better Call Saul.”

“If that video does not provide the basis for the prequel to ‘Better Call Saul,’ I’m going to be extremely disappointed,” Oliver joked.

But as Oliver discovered in the course of his investigation, menstruation as performance-enhancing drug was just the tip of the iceberg when it came to the misleading or potentially damaging information being taught to teenagers across the country.

In his view, the practice of comparing non-virgins, particularly women, to chewed-up pieces of gum or used toothbrushes -- imagery commonly invoked in abstinence-only programs -- is not only sexist but also hurtful to survivors of sexual assault. (To prove the point, Oliver shared a moving clip of survivor Elizabeth Smart speaking about the effect these kinds of metaphors had on her.)

Another negative effect, Oliver argued, was a lack of clarity on the meaning of sexual consent -- an issue raging on campuses nationwide.

“There is no way we’d allow any other academic program to consistently fail to prepare students for life after school,” Oliver said. “And human sexuality, unlike calculus, is something you actually need to know about for the rest of your life.”

With that in mind, Oliver gathered some celebrity friends, including Laverne Cox, Kristen Schaal, Megan Mullally and, yes, Jonathan Banks, to create a sex-ed video that’s informative, non-judgmental and (intentionally) amusing.

You can watch the entire report here.

(And if you’re really feeling brave, you can watch “Linda’s Film on Menstruation” to catch the Emmy-nominated Banks in all his early-'70s glory right here.)

It would also suck to get your period while staying with Daddy Warbucks (or Jamie Foxx). Unless you were wearing a big red dress. Maybe that’s the point.

The ‘growing up’ movie for my fifth grade sex-ed class was about Annie.

(Hold on. It only gets weirder from there.)

In this film, we got to walk backstage with the young Broadway actress currently playing Annie. She explained the rules for taking on the role: Once a girl started her period, she couldn’t be Annie. 2015 research tells me Growing Up on Broadway, circa 1984, wasn’t just shown to elementary school girls in Anchorage, Alaska. There are a couple of essays out there from others who endured it, and a clip of it still exists online.

You see, growing up isn’t such a bad thing. Yes, it means you lose your job, but there are other roles for girls over the hill.

I was already terrified of Miss Hannigan, so the additional trauma of actresses being fired for their bodies changing made me even more terrified of everything Annie.

But while watching the new Annie movie last year, I was somewhat distracted thinking about menstruation. It has to suck to need feminine hygiene products when you are in foster care, I thought. It would also suck to get your period while staying with Daddy Warbucks (or Jamie Foxx). Unless you were wearing a big red dress. Maybe that’s the point.

It also made me reflect upon the other films we watched. In seventh grade, we had to watch The Miracle of Life — yes, the one that shows a baby actually being born. Things are not supposed to stretch that much (I thought the same thing at 28 when I gave birth for the first time). Still, the intended sex-deterrent effect of The Miracle of Life wears off pretty quickly — watching vaginal birthing turns off the libido at least for a day, which is about the best you can hope for with teenagers.

The other sex-ed/menstruation/growing up movies didn’t help. Here’s what we had to work with back then . . . join me on a journey down menstruation memory lane.

Circa 1973, these girls realize that starting your period is different for everyone:

Perhaps the worst one, channeling Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret, is 1974’s Linda’s Film on Menstruation. Somehow a girl and her boyfriend learning together about her period is beyond painful:

But props to Judy for saying uterus to a 16-year-old boy. (Yes, the dim-witted date is Jonathan Banks — aka badass for the ages Mike Ehrmantraut.)

These classics might be before your time, but Mental Floss states The Story of Menstruation was being used in schools up until the 1960s, and records show that the copyright was renewed as recently as 1973:

(If it makes you feel any better, 1960s sex ed videos for boys don’t make their lives seem too great, either.)

I’m hoping the traditional ‘becoming a woman’ movie has changed by now. I only have sons, and I live in Arizona (a state that thinks ignorance is the best protection against teenage sex), so I’ll probably never know. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like they've gotten much better. Here’s a full hour from 1997 that I suspect is still in use many places around the country:

The extent of my sex ed, aside from Annie, involved my mom leaving me a book about bodies on my bed. She also tried to have a conversation about growing up once. It involved explaining that boys would get too excited if I wore a bikini.

I was 12. All I could picture were boys running around a public swimming pool. Watch out, they could get hurt. It was beyond confusing.

For something that more than half of America is going to face, and the other half will have to understand, the weirdness about menstruation and puberty in this country is confounding. My sons so far haven’t asked about the Sex Not for Procreating. Sperm videos are excellent for teaching, I've found, and I got through my 3-year-old's phase of being convinced I was hiding my penis (I’m proud to say he now knows better). They haven’t seen any version of Annie, and I’m not sure what I can show them that will suitably traumatize them enough to keep their pants zipped for a long, long time.

Jonathan Banks

The details (from wikipedia)

Biography

Jonathan Ray Banks (born January 31, 1947) is an American actor. His first notable film roles were in the films Airplane!, 48 Hrs., and Beverly Hills Cop. He has received critical acclaim for his role as Mike Ehrmantraut in the television series Breaking Bad and its spin-off, Better Call Saul, as well as Frank McPike in Wiseguy. He has received four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.

Early life and education

Banks was born in Washington, D.C. His mother, Elena (Adams) Banks, worked for the CIA and was a professor at Indiana State University. He attended Indiana University Bloomington, where he was a classmate of actor Kevin Kline. During that time, they participated in a production of The Threepenny Opera together. Banks dropped out of the university to join a touring company of Hair as a stage manager. He toured Australia with the Hair company.

Career

In 1974, Banks moved to Los Angeles and performed on stage before picking up bit parts on television. He notably starred in the 1974 sex PSA Linda's Film on Menstruation, which was referenced by John Oliver in an episode of his show Last Week Tonight with John Oliver focusing on sex education. The episode aired on August 9, 2015, and Banks appeared at the end of the segment, ridiculing the content of said PSA. He co-starred in 48 Hrs. and Beverly Hills Cop, which are among his best known roles. Other film roles include appearances in Armed and Dangerous, Buckaroo Banzai, Freejack, Flipper, Airplane!, Gremlins, Murder Me, Murder You, Under Siege 2: Dark Territory, and Identity Thief. Banks' big break on television came in 1987 with the series Wiseguy, in which he played Frank McPike for four years, a role which led to a Primetime Emmy Award nomination. Although his character was primarily the hero's mentor, stories occasionally featured McPike as hero. In 1981, he appeared as Dutch Schultz on the NBC series the Gangster Chronicles. He also starred on the short-lived science fiction series Otherworld, as Kommander Nuveen Kroll, and in the sitcom Fired Up.

In the second season of Breaking Bad, Banks appeared as Mike Ehrmantraut. He became a series regular for the third, fourth, and fifth seasons. For the fifth season, he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. He also made guest appearances on several TV shows. In 2014, he had a recurring role as Buzz Hickey in the fifth season of the NBC sitcom Community. Banks reprised his role as Mike Ehrmantraut as a regular in the Breaking Bad spinoff series Better Call Saul, for which he earned his third Emmy nomination in season 1. In April 2016, he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from Indiana University.

He also played the voice of James Gordon in the 2015 video game Batman: Arkham Knight. In 2015, Banks made a special guest appearance on the Mythbusters episode "Supernatural Shooters".

John Oliver Creates A Sex Ed Video With A Little Help From Laverne Cox, Nick Offerman And More On 'Last Week Tonight'

Laura Rosenfeld, Tech Times jonathan banks menstruation

Sex can be a sensitive subject, which is one reason why the topic of sex education in schools can be such a controversial one. Or vice versa.

Someone who's apparently not afraid to talk about sex is John Oliver who analyzed what sex ed looks like in America's schools today during the top story on Sunday night's episode of Last Week Tonight. That's a task that's easier said than done because there is no standardized sex ed system in the U.S.

That means sex ed curricula can vary wildly among different states, districts and even schools. For instance, some states have laws limiting what educators can teach about homosexuality. Others prohibit condom demonstrations. Some schools have abstinence-only programs.

Since sex ed is important for many reasons, including preventing STDs and unintended pregnancy and learning about consent, Oliver created a celebrity-filled video that he thinks should be played in sex ed classrooms all across the country. The likes of Laverne Cox, Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally, Kristen Schaal, Jack McBrayer, Aisha Tyler and Kumail Jonathan banks menstruation provide some comedy but also some vital information to inform the youth of America all about anatomy, abstinence, contraception, STDs and consent. Jonathan Banks, who actually starred in a 1974 educational film about menstruation, even makes an appearance to let us all know that getting your period does not make you better at bowling. I feel enlightened already.

Check out the full Last Week Tonight segment below. It's a little NSFW because, you know, it's about sex education and all.

One particularly baffling american savings bank credit card (with the amazingly to-the-point title, “Linda’s Film on Menstruation”) featured a young woman named Judy whose bowling abilities improved dramatically after she got her period for the first time.

In April 2016, he was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from Indiana University.
