Bank of America Banking Fees

According to some studies, people lose nearly $170 a year just in monthly bank fees. Others report that over the course of a decade you can lose out on at least a $1,000 in hidden fees and maintenance costs simply for having an open account with a bank.

At Earn Cheese, we’re dedicated to ensuring that our users pay $0 in monthly fees while enjoying other zero-fee perks such as no overdraft fees, no international wire fees, and no minimum balance fee. Larger international banks such as Bank of America aren’t usually able to offer the same level of fee-free assistance.

So, how much do you pay to open a bank account with Bank of America? What are the fees associated with a BoA checking account? And, what are your options with various different types of BoA checking accounts and savings account? What's the minimum balance requirement? We’ve got the answers for you.

How Much Are Bank of America Banking Fees?

Banking Fees BoA

How Much Does it Cost to Open a Bank Account at Bank of America?

Some large, international banks require that you meet a minimum opening deposit requirement in order to open an account with them. Bank of America requires a $25 minimum opening deposit for the most basic Bank of America checking account and $100 for the other two tiers of checking accounts.  However, they do each come with their own monthly fee and individual ways to waive the monthly BoA banking fee depending on the account that you have.

What Are the Different Kinds of BoA Checking Accounts?

Each BoA checking account comes with unique monthly fees and other charges that can make them more expensive than the others. The three Bank of America checking account options are:

  • Bank of America Advantage SafeBalance Banking
  • Bank of America Advantage Plus Banking
  • Bank of America Advantage Relationship Banking

What’s the same across the board? Each checking account comes with a debit chip card, the ability to perform money transfers and make payments with Zelle, and access to a Digital Wallet. However, transferring money with Zelle on the Bank of America app does have a limit, which is $2,500 a day.

Bank of America Advantage SafeBalance Banking

The monthly service fee for a Bank of America Advantage SafeBalance Banking checking account is $4.95 (which is less than the Bank of America $12 standard monthly maintenance fee across other banks such as Chase and Citibank). However, you can have that fee waived one of two ways:

It’s important to note that BoA Overdraft Protection is not available for this account. However, if you have insufficient funds, you aren’t charged a fee, the transaction is simply declined. And, you aren’t allowed to order or use paper checks with this account.

Bank of America Advantage Plus Banking

The monthly service/maintenance fee for a Bank of America Advantage Plus Banking checking account is $12. However, you can have that fee waived one of four ways:

  • Enroll in Bank of America’s Preferred Rewards
  • Be enrolled in school and be under the age of 24
  • Have at least one qualifying direct deposit of $250 per month
  • Maintain a minimum daily balance of $1,500

BoA overdraft fees and Overdraft Protection for this account are similar to the following Bank of America checking account option in that when you open the bank account with BoA, you’re able to choose an overdraft setting. And, the Bank of American overdraft fee is $35.

The minimum opening deposit for a Bank of America Advantage Plus Banking account is $100.

Bank of America Advantage Relationship Banking

The monthly service/maintenance fee for a Bank of America Advantage Relationship Banking account is $25. However, you can have that fee waived one of two ways:

  • Enroll in Bank of America’s Preferred Rewards
  • Maintain a combined balance of $10,000 or more in eligible linked accounts

Aside from that, the fees associated with the account are exactly the same as the Advantage Relationship Banking account in that you’re able to choose a Bank of America overdraft setting when opening the account. And, the overdraft fee is $35; the minimum opening deposit for the Bank of America Advantage Relationship Banking account is $100.

What’s different about this BoA checking account is that you can earn APY on your balance. Balances less than $50,000 come with a 0.01% APY while balances over $50,000 come with a 0.02% APY.

How Much Does it Cost to Open a Savings Account at BoA?

There are three main types of BoA savings accounts:

  • Bank of America Advantage Savings
  • Bank of America Minor Savings
  • Bank of America Custodial

A BoA Minor savings account is owned and managed by someone under 18 while a BoA Custodial savings account is similar but is managed by a parent, custodian, or legal guardian.

The Bank of America Advantage Savings account requires a minimum deposit of $100 to open the account. And, you can expect to pay an $8 monthly service/maintenance fee after the first six months unless you:

  • Maintain a minimum daily balance of at least $500
  • Link your Bank of America Advantage Savings account to your Bank of America Advantage Relationship Banking account
  • Enroll in Bank of America’s Preferred Rewards

With Bank of America Advantage Savings account, you can make a total of six transfers and withdrawals each monthly statement cycle with no withdrawal fee. After that, you’ll incur a  $10 fee for each withdrawal.

The APY for this account is .01% unless you’re a Preferred Rewards member, by which the APY will increase to anywhere from .04% to .06%.

What Are the Other Bank of America Monthly Banking Fees?

Like other major banks in the country, there are certain fees associated with a BoA account. You can expect to incur Bank of America monthly maintenance fees, BoA overdraft fees, fees on your BoA checking account and BoA savings account fees, plus wire transfer fees and foreign transaction fees.

Across nearly every checking and savings account, expect an out-of-network ATM withdrawal fee of $2.50 in the United States and $5 when using an international ATM.

BoA international fees are 3% of each transaction.

And, the international and domestic Bank of America wire transfer fees are as follows:

  • BoA incoming domestic wire transfer fees are $15 per transaction
  • BoA incoming foreign wire transfers are $16 per transaction
  • BoA outgoing domestic wire transfer fees are $30 per transaction
  • BoA outgoing foreign wire transfer sent in foreign currency fees are $35 per transaction
  • BoA outgoing foreign wire transfers sent in U.S. Dollar fees are $45 per transaction

The only other fee you’ll really incur from opening a Bank of America checking or savings account would be a lost card fee. To replace a BoA card, you’ll be charged $5.

Bank of America offers three checking accounts – Core Checking, Interest Checking, and Safe Balance Banking each with a different monthly maintenance fee:

  • Bank of America Core Checking Account has a $12 Monthly Maintenance fee which is waived with at least 1 direct deposit of $250 each month or maintain a minimum daily balance of $1,500 or more.
  • Bank of America Interest Checking Accounthas a Monthly Maintenance fee of $25 which is waived if the balance of all linked accounts is above $10,000.
  • Bank of America Safe Balance Banking comes with a Monthly Maintenance fee of $4.95 which cannot be waived.

Bank of America Savings account fees come with a number of restrictions on the maximum number of free withdrawals and restrictions against making payments directly from the account. The three levels of savings accounts are Rewards Savings,  a Minor Savings Account (owned and maintained by an individual under 18), and a Custodial Savings Account which is similar to the Minor Savings account but is managed by a custodian such as a parent.

  • Rewards Saving Account has a monthly fee of $8 which is waived with a minimum daily balance of $500.
  • Minor Savings Account has no monthly maintenance fee but is only available to those under 18 and converts to a Rewards Savings Account once the holder turns 18.
  • Custodial Savings Account is $5 per month which is waived with a minimum balance of at least $300.

Bank of America overdraft fees are broadly similar to other banking providers and are standard across their accounts at $35 for each payment authorized or returned item, with a maximum of four charges per day. Overdraft Protection is available for linked Bank of America accounts. If there is not enough money in one account to pay for the transaction the money will be automatically transferred from the linked account to cover the amount. There is a $12 fee per transaction to use this service.

Should the account holder need to have a copy of their bank statements or printable check images, perhaps due to loss or needing to send to a third party, then they are able to request a copy of their bank statement. The charge is $3 per request.

ATM transactions at Bank of Americas ATM network are free for account holders. Use of a Domestic non-Bank of America ATM will result in $2.50 fee per transaction. This is in addition to any charges that the ATM operator may add. For foreign non-Bank of America ATMs there is a fee of $5 per transaction. In addition, there is an “International Transaction Fee” of 3% for each ATM withdrawal converted into local currency. The issuing bank may also charge a transaction fee.

Ordering checks for a personal account costs on average $30.If a customer requires a cashier’s check, usually needed for real estate purchases or brokerage transactions, these carry a fee of $10 per check. Account holders are able to place a “stop payment” on any checks they have issued. Each request carries a charge of $30.

Wire transfer fees with Bank of America depend on a number of factors such as whether it is incoming, outgoing, is it a domestic or foreign transfer and what currency the wire needs to be sent in. These are outlined in detail below.

  • Incoming domestic wire transfer fees are $15 per transaction.
  • Incoming foreign wire transfer fees are $16 per transaction.
  • Outgoing domestic wire transfer fees are $30 per transaction.
  • Outgoing foreign wire transfer sent in foreign currency fees are $35 per transaction.
  • Outgoing foreign wire transfers sent in U.S. Dollar fees are $45 per transaction.

Customers should be aware that other banks may also charge additional fees for both incoming and outgoing foreign transfers made in any currency. If a deposited transfer is returned there is a fee ranging from $12 to $15.

To replace a lost, damaged or stolen debit card that has not expired, Bank of America charges $5. Rush delivery incurs an extra $15 charge.

How to Avoid Bank of America Checking Account Fees

You can choose a checking account from a big bank as long as you're prepared to avoid any monthly fees.

As one of the nation's largest banks, you're likely to consider Bank of America.

Its basic checking account can act as the central hub of your finances as it offers many features including mobile check deposit and online bill pay.

However, the account does charge a monthly fee.

Learn how you can meet these fee waivers on your account:

The Bank of America Basic Checking Fees

The basic checking account available to the customers is the Advantage Plus Banking account.

The account has a $12 monthly fee unless you meet the following fee waiver requirements every month:

  • Have at least one qualifying direct deposit of $250
  • Maintain a minimum daily balance of $1,500 or more
  • Be a student under age 24 while enrolled in high school, college, university or a vocational program

Avoiding the Monthly Fee

If you cannot meet fee waiver requirements, your checking account will end up being quite expensive.

Of the different ways that you can avoid the monthly fee, the direct deposit requirement has the most leeway.

Here’s how current Bank of America customers can cut the costs of maintaining a basic checking account:

ACH credit transfers are considered direct deposits

According to many Bank of America checking account holders, an ACH credit triggered a direct deposit account alert.

Because BofA doesn’t require a minimum amount on the direct deposit, customers can transfer a small amount of money from an online savings account, such as one from Ally Bank or a PayPal account. It would qualify as a fee-waiving transaction.

You can test this with your other external bank accounts by setting up an account alert for direct deposits and initiating a transfer.

Here are savings accounts with no monthly maintenance fees:

Note: that this step is possible only because Bank of America’s computer system recognizes ACH credits as direct deposits—a tweak in the system would destroy this method.

Consider Online Banks

Imagine a checking account without the monthly fees and minimum balance requirements.

It can be found at online banks because they don't have to deal with the costs of paying for branches and branch staff.

You'll probably notice not much of a different between a checking account from an online bank compared to a traditional bank.

With online checking accounts, you're likely to get an account with:

  • No monthly fees
  • No minimum balance requirements
  • Earn interest on deposits
  • Large ATM network access
  • ATM fee refunds
  • Mobile check deposit

Consider these banks:

With lower costs, you'll have to jump through fewer hurdles just to have a bank account to manage your money.

It's possible that you won't have to step into a bank branch ever again.
