The Falcons and the Patriots are set to meet in Super Bowl 51.

This year's Super Bowl is a matchup of the underdog against the which team are you rooting for team in many ways.

The Atlanta Falcons arrive after almost nobody picked them to get to this point. The Cleveland Browns went 1-15 but actually had more bets placed on them to win the Super Bowl before the year than the Falcons did. But Atlanta went 11-5 and ripped through the NFC playoffs behind a likely MVP in Matt Ryan, a Devonta Freeman who proved he wasn't a flash in the pan the year before, a pass rush that found a leader in Vic Beasley and an organizational structure built after the Seattle Seahawks and has risen to power almost just as quickly.

It's their second Super Bowl appearance. They're looking for their first Super Bowl win.

The New England Patriots arrive after everyone more or less laughed at the four-game suspension Roger Goodell handed Tom Brady to start the year, as if the best quarterback missing a fourth of the year was really going to make a ton of difference. It didn't matter that they traded their top two defensive players, defensive end Chandler Jones and which team are you rooting for linebacker Jamie Collins, or that matchup nightmare Rob Gronkowski's year ended a month before the playoffs. They still went 14-2 behind the old system of pinpointing mismatches on offense and bending but not breaking on defense.

It's their NFL-record ninth Super Bowl appearance. They're looking for the fifth ring of the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era.

Which side are you on?

Question: How do you know the guy next to you has a fantasy football team?

Answer: Wait 30 seconds and he’ll tell you.

Which brings us to today’s discourse.

I don’t care about your fantasy football team. No, really. I hope it loses. Perpetually. If the idea of duke energy sc bill pay me about your fantasy football team suddenly flies in your direction, try to duck. Because I’d love to send Lizzie Borden after you.

I hate to use the word hate. So let’s leave it here: I have a flaming dislike for fantasy sports that stretches to the moon and back. I find them inane, not to mention a serial offender of exacerbating the biggest pox on all of our houses: more self-indulgence.

I mean, I remember when sports was about rooting for your team. You know. The innocence of rooting for laundry. Or your alma mater. Enduring the pain, like going 90 years without a championship, to revel in the joy: finally winning because of a gag job by your arch rival.

That’s not enough anymore for the generation too busy to watch television. Now you get to root for a contrivance, thereby sending the allure of sports — living and dying with your real team — into a crossing pattern with fantasy. And worse, mistaking many of us as people who actually care.

Still, fantasy football felt a duller ache until this season. It’s getting to where I’d rather endure a transatlantic flight seated next to Curt Schilling than watch the National Football League, whose games now seem to get in the way of ads for DraftKings and FanDuel. It’s already beyond incessant. And a complete fraud.

Seriously. It’s not just gambling. It’s a blatant form. And yet it gets to walk between the raindrops. While the rest of us, who used to enjoy a wager or two on a football game, are victimized by selective prosecution.

Now I’m the last guy who ever relies on politicians to solve anything harder changing a light bulb. But we may have hope.

Attorney Steve Silver, a former sportswriter for the Las Vegas Sun who founded the web site TheLegalBlitz.com, wrote a most entertaining essay earlier this month on the fraudulence of daily fantasy sports. He quoted U.S. Congressman Frank Pallone Jr. of New Jersey, the ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over energy, environment, health care, telecommunications and commerce. Silver wrote that Pallone recently requested the committee hold a hearing to “review the legal status of daily fantasy sports.”

“Anyone who watched a game (has been) inundated by commercials for fantasy sports websites," Pallone said in Silver’s essay. “These sites are enormously popular, arguably central to the fans’ experience, and professional leagues are seeing the enormous profits as a result. Despite how mainstream these sites have become, the legal landscape governing these activities remains murky and should be reviewed.”

Silver noted that Pallone is a “huge supporter of legalized sports betting,” which only makes him presidential material. Still, Silver wrote, fantasy sports exist “in a carve-out of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), exempt from the federal ban of Internet gambling so long as the games meet a few criteria.”

One of which is this: “All winning outcomes reflect the relative knowledge and skill of the participants and are determined predominantly by accumulated statistical results of the performance of individuals (athletes in the case of sports events) in multiple real-world sporting or other events.”

So let’s see if we have this straight: Success at fantasy sports is based on more skill than winning a sports bet? Why, because a few no-life stat geeks plug in their statistical formulas and lose just as much as the rest of the cattle?

If you think fantasy sports require more skill than winning a sports bet, you’ve never won a sports bet.

“We should have a system where people are free to use their money to play poker, bet on sports, and play fantasy as they see fit,” Silver wrote. “However, the more DraftKings and FanDuel inundate all forms of media with their ‘deposit $5, win millions’ ads, the more unwanted attention they will draw.

“So please, stop the commercials. We get it,” Silver wrote. “You figured out how to toe the line between unlawful sports betting and lawful paid fantasy sports. But if I see that idiot Patriots fan win $1 million again I’m throwing a deflated football through the TV.”

Afreeca Freecs a.k.a T1 v2.0: The LCK team you should be rooting for in 2022

The offseason has been a turbulent time for every region, but Korea in particular has been ravaged by roster changes. With entire teams getting ripped apart and stitched back together, it’s hard to predict which team will come out on top. The LCK power rankings are all over the place.

Afreeca Freecs are a team that’s taking a different approach. Rather than bidding on top tier players, they kept their star and built a promising team to face the bidding war the rest of the LCK is immersed in. Afreeca’s smart team building gives them a seeming edge over the other organizations, and they’re looking like a top team going into the new year. What makes 2022 Afreeca worth rooting for?

Almost four years later, AF have yet to see international success. They’ve had a few high LCK finishes, but they’ve only had one somewhat disappointing Worlds performance from all the way back in 2018.

Kim “Kiin” Gi-in has a long tenure on AF. In fact, it’s the only LCK team that he’s ever been on, and packaged with AF’s mixed results, in a way this makes him LCK’s worst kept secret. He may not be known internationally, but anyone who’s seen him play in the regular season knows just how good he is.

This clip displays both why AF had a sudden resurgence in the Summer Split, and why they were never able to be the best team in the LCK. Simply put, Kiin carries the entire map. He knows where he should be at any given time and his pressure often creates opportunities for the rest of his team at no cost to him.

Looking at the scoreboard just before this dragon fight, Kiin had a massive +47 CS advantage, as well as much more map pressure than Lee "Rich" Jae-won, his opponent. Kiin has his big moments, but the most impressive thing about his playstyle is his heavy emphasis on pressuring the map and outfarming his opponent. But Kiin does more than just get himself a lead: he uses it.

Not only did Kiin’s topside pressure help Lee “Dread” Jin-hyeok get both Rift Heralds, but he managed to keep three Nongshim members at bay. Kiin was where he needed to be, but the rest of his team (aside from Dread) were extremely late to the fight. It feels like the rest of AF should have either dropped Herald mid and left, or should have just fully committed to taking the mid inhibitor. Instead, they half-assed both and gained nothing.

It’d be fair to say no Afreeca roster has been able to keep up with Kiin. So what makes the 2022 roster different?

T1 need no introduction. While Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok is the face of the org, many of the world’s best players have been put through T1 in some capacity. Players like Kim “Khan” Dong-ha, Kim “Gori” Tae-woo, and freshly crowned world champion Lee “Scout” Ye-chan all went through T1 in some capacity. Moon “Oner” Hyeon-joon started his pro career on T1 Academy in March 2020, and he became a world-class jungler in less than two years. T1’s talent scouting is second to none. Considering most of Afreecas’ new pickups come from T1’s rigorous training and coaching, it’s hard to doubt this new team is destined for greatness.

Teddy is the seasoned veteran of the bunch, and his playstyle matches that reputation. He’s a very consistent player. He knows his limits, and he plays within them. T1 seemed to prefer Gumayusi’s aggressive and flashy playstyle going into Worlds 2021, so Teddy’s been warming the bench for a while. Fortunately, Afreeca Freecs is the perfect fit for Teddy’s skillset.

Whether it be a hard carry Ezreal or a 1/1/11 Ashe, Teddy knows how to optimize his champion and use every tool he has. This is why Teddy can have such hard carry performances in one game and a support role in the next. He’s humble enough to be a team player and fill the role he needs to, yet skilled enough to excel at whatever role that may be.

Ryu “Hoit” Ho-seong is a support player that’s always been just outside the spotlight. He started on DWG’s original LCK roster all the way back when Cho “BeryL” Geon-hee was an ADC player, but, as time went on, Hoit got overshadowed by BeryL as he transitioned out of being the ADC.

In a clip from DWG’s set against KT back in February 2020, Hoit showed his greatest strength: patience. Most players would immediately use Leona ult on the Miss Fortune to cancel her ult and keep her from doing damage, but Hoit identified that none of his teammates were actively getting damaged by the ultimate. Hoit waited for the perfect opportunity and landed a four-man ult instead of just hitting one person.

Hoit embodies the stereotypical LCK playstyle, and he tends to wait for the perfect initiation rather than fighting whenever possible. If AF can carve out an identity for themselves as a macro-oriented, objective focused team, then Hoit will be the perfect fit.

Choi “Ellim” El-lim is the definition of a team player. He tends not to worry about how he can get himself ahead and what he can do to put the game on his back. Rather, Ellim worries about how he can put his team ahead. Early ganks, heavy priority on objectives, and low priority on farm is just how Ellim plays.

For the few sets Ellim got to play with T1 in 2021, he dictated the pace. If there was an objective up, the rest of T1 were already there. He knew how to set up big teamfights, and he knew how to create a lead for his team. However, Ellim lacks the independence and flexibility of a jungler like Lee “Tarzan” Seung-yong or Zhao “Jiejie” Li-Jie, and he could be a potential weak point for the 2022 Afreeca roster if the enemy jungler focuses him down before he gets the chance to force teamfights and set up ganks.

Yoo “FATE” Su-hyeok may feel a bit out of place on this roster at first. Kiin is the face and soul of Afreeca and has which team are you rooting for since the organization’s LCK debut. The other three members all have similar roots in T1, and they’ve all had some level of success within the LCK. Up until the 2020 Summer Split, FATE seemed like a bottom tier mid laner. His brief stint in Turkey made him look like the sort of player that wasn’t good enough to play in his home region, but two years in Challengers Korea molded him into a player worth bringing into the LCK.

FATE is at his best when he has a team willing to fight early and follow up on his rotations. He doesn’t have the strongest lane stats, but his overall kill participation hovered between 75-85% through his entire time as Liiv Sandbox’s mid laner. However, that doesn’t mean FATE always wants a kill. He rotates with a goal. Whether it’s a small objective like Scuttle Crab, or an early Herald, he rarely fights without a goal in mind.

In an interview from 2020, FATE was asked how he felt about accruing some POG (Player of the Game) votes for Sandbox’s wins. He replied, “I really don’t think about the whole POG thing. I just play with the intent of our team winning.” In many ways, FATE still plays that way today. Even after some mixed success in the year and a half since that interview, his gameplay reflects the mentality of prioritizing the team over himself.

Afreeca Freecs took their roster selection in a smart direction for 2022. While there are obvious standouts like Teddy and Kiin, every single member of this team plays in the same way. Where other organizations were in a mad dash to snatch up star players and hold onto their best, Afreeca have almost entirely reformed their roster and signed players that have inherent synergy.

The LCK has been characterized for slow, calculated macro play for years. Afreeca seem like a team that’s been custom-built to maintain and uphold that classic Korean playstyle. They may not have the same starpower as other teams in the LCK, but AF have the most cohesive and promising roster going into 2022. All of these players are hungry for their big break, and 2022 will likely be the year we see them achieve some much-deserved success.

Nobody outside of Philadelphia or New England likes this year's Super Bowl matchup. Here's your guide to rooting for the lesser of two evils.

WASHINGTON — Since approximately halftime of the Philadelphia Eagles’ historic thrashing of the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, we’ve heard little outside of the exasperated cries of football fans dreading the sight of the New England Patriots “hosting” the Eagles in Super Bowl LII.

It’s the Super Bowl matchup so undesirable that some have even gone as far as to root for a third, very graphic option:

(In case you don’t know the scene in question, here’s the short version.)

But, let’s be real here: You’re going to watch the game. You’re not going antiquing with your significant other. You’re not binge-watching Netflix. On Sunday, Feb. 4, your TV will be tuned to NBC to see just what goes down at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.

There’s nothing wrong with that, either. The Super Bowl is more than just a football game. It’s basically an American holiday observed even by non-football fans. So no matter how much we hate the participants, non-fans won’t miss a good excuse for a social gathering and football fans aren’t going to pass up the chance to get one last real taste of professional football until August.

In fact, this is the best way to watch football. While seeing your team play in the country’s biggest sporting event is an amazing thrill, watching games without a vested rooting interest is a close second — and generally better for the blood pressure. Perhaps it’s a bit defeatist, but I find it relieving to know there’s no chance for soul-crushing grief at the end of the night.

That said, there’s no joy in seeing either the Patriots or Eagles leave Minneapolis with a Lombardi Trophy in hand. Of the last 16 Super Bowls, New England has played in half of them and won five — but their greatness isn’t celebrated, it’s widely reviled. Philly fans have a long, sordid history (oh, there’s another link … I could really do this all day) and it would be a slap in the face of karma to see their general thuggery rewarded with a long-awaited Super Bowl.

So, while actively rooting for one of these teams seems out of the question, which is the lesser of two evils?

The Eagles seem to be the easy answer because they’re huge underdogs; backup quarterback Nick Foles is playing historically well despite being the main reason why nobody gave this team a chance to advance in the playoffs; and a number of their players have served as the new face for the NFL players’ social awareness movement. Plus, there’s the whole never-having-won-a-Super-Bowl thing.

Meanwhile, the Patriots are hammering home the point that they’re the greatest dynasty in professional sports. Sure, the Boston Celtics won eight straight championships from 1959-1966 and the New York Yankees have won a pennant in every decade en route to a ridiculous 27 titles in their history. But given the degree of difficulty to achieve sustained success in the NFL, a sixth Super Bowl victory in 17 years will put the Pats ahead of two of the most annoyingly arrogant franchises in sports. Not to mention, the NFL will likely never see another run like New England’s again, so we have to eventually appreciate just how rare and special this organization is.

There’s really no right or wrong answer to which team is the lesser of two evils. The only thing we can reasonably root for is a good game that comes down to the final first financial bank texas customer service number — just like last season’s unprecedented overtime thriller.

For those who don’t want to succumb to the dark side, anyway.

Why do we root for teams that always lose?

I've twice sat alongside my husband and his Michigan family, cheering on this perennial underdog team, high-fiving complete strangers in giddy delight when the Lions score, thinking along with every blue-clad, bright-eyed eternal optimist at Ford Field that this is it … only to see everyone's hopes crushed.

When it comes to sports, however, “I love that theory, but that's not what fanship is about,” Hirt said. “That expresses fair-weather fanship. People who are really fans despise fair-weather fans. [They believe] they're not legit. We may celebrate with them when the team wins but we don't respect them. For the real fans, the idea I've found is they really do suffer when their team loses.” They suffer. And yet, they keep going back for more. “That's one of the interesting things about fans,” Hirt said. “There's something that drives them to [keep watching] independent of how it makes them feel. Even knowing ahead of time they're going to lose. It's this sense of loyalty: 'If I'm committed to them I have to support them.' They take an almost perverse pride in 'that's what makes me different.' That shows more about you in some ways than being the bandwagon person that jumps on a team when they're successful.” “A lot of this is the idea that loyalty hallmarks a true fan—if you suffer when they are not successful, you've earned that mantle that you're a true fan,” Hirt went on. “So when they pull off a miracle, you were there.” But that doesn't answer how they can stand the pain. Maybe that's because it's about more than the sting of loss, Hirt said. “A big part of this is that it's something you share with other people,” he said. “We truly embrace having other people commiserate with us. It's a real bonding thing to feel connected with people who care as much as you do. You get that win, lose, or draw with sports. What a great opportunity to feel connected to something that transcends ourselves. We're all looking for something.” There's also an optimism that keeps these fans going, Hirt said. “Hope springs eternal. One of the things that make sports one of the most appealing things for people to follow is the belief [that it might happen].” With every new season and game, the slate is clean, he said. This optimism is similar to what makes so many people root for an underdog, though their motivation is different, Hirt said. “One of the beauties of sports is that anything can happen on any given day,” he went on. “It can be luck, outplaying, or just hustle.” That means there's always hope that a little team can take down a Goliath. “Everybody loves a Cinderella team.” Whether they’re an underdog team or a team that consistently fails to win, it's the chance that they might that draws fans in. If they can pull off the miracle, what might we be able to do? “So many of us that played sports ourselves, we might not have been the best player but we tried our best and worked harder,” Hirt said. “We want our kids to do that because it teaches work ethic. When you see underdogs win, [it shows] that stuff pays off. The team that wants it more and tries harder getting rewarded is a theme that really resonates with us. It makes us feel like there's justice in the world.” So far there's no justice for Lions fans, but hey, after the Cubs found it in the World Series last fall, anything is possible. Maybe this year, Lions.

“Why do you subject yourself to this?” I pressed my husband after a humiliating loss to the Packers. “Year after year, game after game, you know they're going to lose. Doesn't it hurt too much to keep watching?” But after a few minutes of commiserating with his fellow fans, he turns to the future. “Next year will be different,” he says. Maybe next year they'll make it to the playoffs, he believes, and who knows, maybe for the first time ever, the Super Bowl. This raises another question: what do fans even get out of a winning team? Having no interest which team are you rooting for sports myself, I'm curious: why does it matter that one group of extremely highly paid professional athletes beats another team?

To find out, I asked Dr. Edward Hirt, a professor with the Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences at Indiana University who's researched fanship and allegiance. Social psychology's historic answer, Hirt said, was a phenomenon called basking in reflected glory. “Basically, one way we derive our self-esteem is through our connections with other people who are successful,” he explained. It's the same idea behind gloating about our kids' accomplishments, or talking about celebrities from our hometown, he said. “We have some connection to those people and if we point out that connection, we indirectly derive a sense of esteem in other people's eyes.” When it comes to sports, however, “I love that theory, but that's not what fanship is about,” Hirt said. It's this sense of loyalty: 'If I'm committed to them I have to support them.' They take an almost perverse pride in 'that's what makes me different.' That shows more about you in some which team are you rooting for than being the bandwagon person that jumps on a team when they're successful.” “A lot of this is the idea that loyalty hallmarks a true fan—if you suffer when they are not successful, you've earned that mantle that you're a true fan,” Hirt went on. “So when they pull off a miracle, you were there.”

But that doesn't answer how they can stand the pain.
