Overview of Lowe’s Credit Card

Lowe’s Consumer Credit Card is a competitive card which can be used to gain benefits on Lowe’s purchases and finance large purchases, and it can also be used for general purchases anywhere. When you use the card you can benefit from small monthly repayments and a competitive general interest rate.

When you make Lowe’s purchases with the Consumer Credit Card, you have two primary options. You can either choose a discount of 5%, which applies to any purchase you make, or you can select a special 18 month financing option for expenditures over $299. With the latter option, if you pay off the balance in full within 18 months you will pay no interest. So you will enjoy the benefits no matter what type of purchases you make, whether they are small everyday purchases or larger project expenditures. Select between two attractive card designs.

There are a few other Lowe’s credit cards to choose from, such as the Lowe’s Business Credit card and the Lowe’s Project Card, and if you would like more information relating to any of the cards that Lowe’s provides, please the Lowe’s website.

The Lowe’s Credit Card has simple interest terms. Standard annual percentage rate (APR) on purchases is 24.99% variable with no annual fee. Minimum interest charge is $1. Late payment fee charge is $35. If you do not want to pay interest on your balance then the balance needs to paid off in full within 23 days after the previous bill.

Visit Lowe’s on Facebook, and Pinterest . Lowe’s card payment login, address and customer service availability make the process simple and easy to follow.

Have you ever been shopping at Lowe’s and noticed a sign promoting the Lowe’s Advantage Card?

The in-house store credit card offers your choice of 5% off purchases or special financing offers for no-interest or low-interest payoff periods.

Although that’s tempting, money expert Clark Howard says these offers are not for everyone: He says there are risks with store credit cards like these that you may not be aware of. I’m going to detail those, as well as all the pros and cons of this card, in this article.

Table of Contents

What Is the Lowe’s Advantage Card?

The Lowe’s Advantage Card is an in-house store credit card offered by the home improvement retailer. It does not carry a Visa or Mastercard logo. This means it is only for purchases made at a Lowe’s store or through Lowes.com. And you can’t use it for purchases at any other retailer.

This card, which is often pitched as a quick-approval option while in the store, does offer two potential benefits. You can use it for special financing for home improvement projects, home appliances and more. Or you can use it for 5% off the purchase price of eligible items. If your purchase qualifies for both, you must choose one or the other.

How Can I Save Money with the Lowe’s Advantage Card?

There are a couple of different ways that you could use the Lowe’s Advantage card to enhance your purchases at the home improvement store:

  1. Discount off the purchase price
  2. Special financing

It’s important to note that these two ways cannot be combined. The fine print on the card excludes it, and it is clearly explained on the Lowe’s website:

The Lowe's Advantage Card offers customers a couple of different options for savings on purchases.

When you look at these options, you may notice that the 5% off is similar to what some non-branded credit cards offer in cash back or rewards points. But the advantage here is that you’re getting an immediate 5% off your purchase price rather than a reward of a credit on your billing statement.

Clarks says the 5% discount is enough to consider this card if you’re a frequent shopper at the store. That comes with an important caveat, though: He says you must pay your balance in full each month for the discount to be worth it.

The special financing offers are where people may run into trouble. Clark has a warning on retroactive interest with these purchases. I’ll explain that later in this story.

How to Use the Lowe’s Advantage Card

Discounts Off the Purchase PriceSpecial Financing Offers
5% Off Most Everyday Purchases: There is no limit to the number of purchases you can make at the 5% discount, but there are some limitations and exclusions you should note.6 Months of No Interest Financing: If you spend more than $299 on a purchase with this card, it is eligible for “special financing” that will let you pay it off in monthly installments for six months. However, if you don’t repay the total by the end of the term, you could be subject to retroactive interest all the way back to the date of sale.
10% Off First Purchase: At the time this article was written, Lowe’s was running a promotional offer: 10% off the first purchase made by new cardholders. The discount, which was an active promotion at the time this article was written, was capped at $100.84 Months of Fixed Payments: With a purchase of $2,000 or more, you can use this card to pay at a fixed APR. While that may sound good on the surface, the fine print offers a warning: You must make fixed monthly payments for the duration of the payback period.

Is the Risk Worth the Potential Reward?

The idea of an interest-free six-month period to finance your next big household purchase is attractive on the surface. But there are risks involved.

The main risk associated with this card is retroactive interest. Let me explain how that works.

If you make a Lowe’s purchase of $299 or more, you can use this card to get 0% financing on the purchase for six months.

If you fail to pay the balance in full by the end of the six months, you will be assessed retroactive interest charges on the full purchase amount. And that interest accrues from the date of the purchase, leaving you owing well in excess of the amount you saw at the register.

Though interest rates vary based upon your credit assessment, it’s likely that your APR will be higher than the national average if you incur the retroactive interest.

After digging into the fine print on this offer, I found a few other things to consider:

  • Making the required monthly payments is not necessarily going to be the path to paying off your purchase: “Depending on purchase amount, promotion length and payment allocation, the required minimum monthly payment may or may not pay off purchase by end of the promotional period.”
  • If you have more than one purchase financed on the card, your payments may not go directly to the special finance offer: “Some or all of the minimum payment based on the promotional balance may be applied to other account balances.”

Clark doesn’t like the special financing, but if you use it solely to get the 5% back and pay it off monthly, this card could work. For shoppers who fit into this category, you may also want to consider using a rewards credit card that can be used anywhere.

Using a cash back credit card, such as the Citi Double Cash, could be a way to secure 2% cash back without having to tap into a new line of credit. Revolving cash back cards, such as the Discover it Cash Back Card or Chase Freedom, offer 5% cash back on categories that change every three months. It’s worth checking those categories before your Lowe’s purchase to see if you may qualify for the 5% discount.

2 Alternatives to the Lowe’s Advantage Card

If you are looking for an alternative to using a store credit card, Clark says these are better ways to finance your upcoming home improvement project if you can’t pay for it in cash.

Clark’s First Suggestion: Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC)

If the project is large enough, you may actually want to visit your local bank or credit union first. If there is equity in your home, applying for a home equity line of credit may be the most prudent financial decision.

Clark says you’re probably better off securing a lower APR rate via traditional lending if you know you can’t pay off the full balance of your purchase before the introductory offer expires.

“Even though they’re going to pay interest right away, they’re going to pay a much lower effective interest rate than even with 6, 12, or 18 months at 0% but then goes to a 25% or higher interest rate later,” Clark says.

Clark’s Second Suggestion: Low Fixed-Rate Credit Card

Is your home project expensive, but not worth leveraging the mortgage on your house? Clark has another alternative: Ask your bank or credit union about its lowest fixed-rate APR credit cards.

Clark says you often can find a fixed-rate credit card at a credit union for under 10% APR. He would prefer locking in that card rate and trying to pay the balance off early instead of using the 84-month, fixed-rate financing through Lowe’s.

Final Thoughts

If you are considering a large purchase at Lowe’s, the temptation will be there to apply for the Lowe’s Advantage Card. Here are some pros and cons to consider before you make that decision:

Lowe’s Advantage Card: Pros and Cons

ProsCons
Up to 10% off first purchase with the cardCannot use the card anywhere but Lowe’s
5% off most Lowe’s purchases with the cardThere is potential for high APR interest accrual
Special financing offers give 0% periods on some purchasesRetroactive interest is due on special financing if not paid in full by end of promo period

Bottom Line: If you have the financial flexibility and personal discipline to pay your bill for this card immediately, you could enjoy 5% off most of your home improvement purchases. However, if you’re trying to finance a home improvement project that will take you some time to repay, money expert Clark Howard strongly cautions against getting involved with this type of credit.

For homeowners and do-it-yourselfers who make periodic runs to home improvement stores for any number of purchases, the Lowe’s Consumer credit card is an easy choice. Though the card is only usable at Lowe’s, the 5 percent discount, myriad of special financing offers and lack of annual fee is hard to beat, especially if you have several upcoming renovation projects in mind.

And unlike standard cash back cards, there’s no wait to collect rewards – the discount is immediately applied at the register or online checkout. Like most retail cards, however, the excessive APR and lack of fringe benefits mean occasional customers need not apply.

As an added bonus, you can get 20% off your first purchase (up to $100 off) through July 31, 2020.

Flexible rewards, but restrictions apply

Where the Lowe’s Consumer credit card really shines is in its choice of rewards. Cardholders can decide between a 5 percent discount (automatically applied at checkout) on in-store or online purchases, or 0 percent promotional financing on purchases of $299 or more. The ability to spread your payments over six months could save you more money on interest charges than the instant discount, so choose your rewards carefully depending on your purchase total and ability to pay. However, these offers can’t be used simultaneously – you’ll have to choose one or the other.

For larger purchases of $2,000 or more, the Lowe’s Consumer card offers reduced interest rates of 3.99 percent, 5.99 percent and 7.99 percent for three-, five- and seven-year periods, respectively. This option applies to in-store purchases only, and minimum monthly payments are required. Like the other rewards, discounted long-term financing cannot be combined with other credit-related promotional offers.

While a choice of rewards is a nice perk atypical of store-branded credit cards, the limitations on the Lowe’s Consumer card don’t stop there. Cardholders are unable to combine the everyday discount with other in-store discounts or manufacturer’s coupons. Certain appliances, extended protection or replacement plans, and services such as in-home assembly or installation don’t qualify for the discount, either.

Read the promotional fine print

While the card’s reduced-interest financing is pretty straightforward, the 0 percent option requires closer examination thanks to the inclusion of deferred interest. It’s easy to zero in on the “0 percent” language and think the interest for that purchase is waived entirely, but that’s not the case: Interest accrues during the promotional period and comes back into play if you don’t pay your entire balance by the end of the term.

Making minimum payments as outlined in your statement won’t likely be enough; you’ll need to divide the purchase total by the number of months in the deal (in this case, six months) and make that your minimum payment instead. Otherwise, interest that built up over the last few months will be added to your remaining balance – and could increase the amount you owe by hundreds of dollars if you financed a big-ticket item.

Above-average APR

It’s no secret store-branded credit cards come with hefty interest rates, but this one takes the cake: At 26.99 percent, the Lowe’s Consumer card’s APR exceeds the average retail card’s APR by more than 3 percent. In other words, unless you’re taking advantage of promotional financing, it’s best to resist the temptation to charge more than you can afford to pay off every month.

Nonexistent perks

Unlike many other retail cards, the Lowe’s Consumer card offers zilch in the way of special benefits – no free shipping, purchase security, extended warranty or return protection. Indeed, the only “extra” you’ll find here is the card’s exclusive financing offers.

Why get the Lowe’s Consumer credit card?

  • You already spend a lot of money at Lowe’s and want to benefit from an ongoing discount without having to pay an annual fee.
  • You’re a do-it-yourselfer who wants access to promotional financing for those big home renovation projects.
  • You’re a Home Depot customer who’s willing to switch for the 5 percent rewards.
  • You don’t plan to carry a balance from month to month.

How to use the Lowe’s Consumer credit card:

  • Because of the card’s high APR, opt for deferred-interest financing over the discount if you’ll need more than a month to pay off a purchase.
  • That being said, beware of deferred interest associated with the card’s special financing offers. Interest is imposed retroactively if you still owe a balance on your purchase at the end of the promotional period.
  • Pay your regular balance in full every month to avoid paying higher-than-average interest.

The Bottom Line

As a general rule of thumb, we usually recommend avoiding store branded credit cards altogether.

If you want to earn rewards, most people will be better off applying for a general cash back card to use everyday. You can check out our Guide to the Top Cash Back cards by clicking here.

With that being said, we can see how a Lowe’s card can be beneficial to someone that shops there regularly or has a home project to complete.

Plus, a Lowe’s credit card can be very helpful if an emergency should arise. As long as you’re being smart about the way you’re using your card from Lowes, owning this card makes sense.

Hope our Lowes Credit Card Review has helped you in deciding which card to apply for. When in doubt, don’t do it. You can always opt in later.

Cardholders spirit airlines phone number usa decide between a 5 percent discount (automatically applied at checkout) on in-store or online purchases, or 0 percent promotional financing on purchases of $299 or more. The ability to spread your payments over six months could save you more money on interest charges than the instant discount, so choose your rewards carefully depending on your purchase total and ability to pay. However, these offers can’t be used simultaneously – you’ll have to choose one or the other.

For larger purchases of $2,000 or more, the Lowe’s Consumer card offers reduced interest rates of 3.99 percent, 5.99 percent and 7.99 percent for three- five- and seven-year periods, respectively.

Making minimum payments as how hard is it to get a lowes credit card in your statement won’t likely be enough; you’ll need to divide the purchase total by the number of months in the deal (in this case, six months) and make that your minimum payment instead.

Initial limit of $500. After no lates, low util., and perseverance, I am now at $8,500. I've noticed they?give much larger CLI after you've been with them a year or so.?I rarely use this card and barely like Lowe's. You get a 5% discount on everything! Whenever I have a home to remodel, I am sure this card will be taken advantage of; they are always offering some time of 0% for 6 mos or so. :-). Push the love button every three months or so. I do it a lot as they are only soft inquiries, which do not reflect poorly as they are an existing creditor on your CR.

The Good The Bad and The Ugly

Credit Karma Member

First off I cannot faught lowes as a store for any issues with this card as Synchrony is the card issue. I would love it if Lowes as a company were to dump them and move to a more replutatle company such as Citi.? My expereince with the card has been good for the most part but there are a few catches. Here is the bad, DO NOT stack promotional purchaes and regular purchases together, they will not apply the payment to the promortional purchase, as others have cited, when you pay your bill so you are slaped with compounded retoractive intrest from that point on until all of the promotional purchase is paid off.? Now the ugly,? the website is garbage for a normal PC user, the mobile version is suprsining better.? Synchrony doesn't always raise credit rates on a regular.? This is actully one of my lowest credit lines started at 600 and then bumped to 1300 three years ago.? I use this card on the regular and pay it in full. I often times pay it well before the due date and they have not bumped up the credit limit on the card.? I've contacted them about this via the online chat portal and they give the ususal run around of various factors on your credit report that they supposidily check. I looked into this and they haven't done a soft query on my credit report in years LOL!? I'm sporting a 799 credit sore and I've expressed to them. The only two options that I have is to either wait it our or request an increase online or via their customer service. Be warned if you request home remedies for cough caused by acid reflux increase online or via the customer service department you are now authorizing them to do a hard query on your credit report!? I told? them to bugger off on that idea as I don't want be staring at that on my credit report for the next two years.?? I'm planing a major kitchen remodle and home depot has my business until Synchrony gets off it's own butt. The Ugly. I've had a long history with Synchrony, please note they used to be called GE Money Bank and they ruined their repurtation to the point that they had to change names!? This creditor is absolutly the worst of the worst.? The day you get your statement pay your bill, never wait on this one.? I've had them take up to 7 business days from the moment I issued the payment for them to take it and process it. other times it takes anywhere from 24-48 hours? I gennerally recomend that if you can do not carry any balance on this card, if you are working with a promotional purchase don't use the card? for any other purchase until you pay it off or use it for a secondary promotional purchase. Pros: 5% off purchase, using the card makes returns easier if you lost the reciept, and promotional pruchases which can be a catch 22. Cons: Synchrony AKA worst creditor out there, bad at rasiing credit limits, customer service is a bit of a joke,? Synchrony doesn't work well with finincal software such as quicken or Mint or MS Money. ? Overall: The card has some perks but you have to use it very, very wisley.? Failure to do so will lead to nothing but headaches!

Got it for the first time. Can't freaking activate it or add a payment method to the account online. tried it again and again day after day. Had to call in to pay and luckily they allow for a one time payment, but can't do anything else for me. really good first impression Lowes :-/

Dropped me

Credit Karma Member

Synchrony closed my business account for no reason with no notice. Always paid my bill and I'm not sure why they closed it. They said they sent me a letter and I can find out then. Poor customer service.

Can I give a ZERO

Credit Karma Member

I have a credit limit that more than allows for a purchase I wanted to make at Lowes. I filled up my cart and tried to pay. I got a message that I needed to call. I called and went through the identity verification and I was told my order would go through. Nope. Called again and SYNCHRONY WANTS A VIDEO OF ME. This is totally unacceptable.

Worst Service ever

Credit Karma Member

Pay on time rating Excellent never missed payment never late then today I get a notice from Experian of an account status change and Lowes closed my account but did not even notify me.

TERRIBLE REPS & TERRIBLE WEBSITE

Credit Karma Member

Just opened a new account with Lowes. Made a small $20 "test" store purchase to make sure everything was okay. Within a few days after the purchase I used my Chase checking account to pay off the balance. How hard is it to get a lowes credit card looked okay, received a confirmation # that the payment was being processed. Even checked the account online, and the payment went through bringing my balance back down to zero. Now 10 days later, I just received an email saying payment was rejected. Okay. So I called and spoke to 3 reps in succession about this, trying I thought rather nicely, to fix the problem. The 1st rep suggested that I delete my bank info and start over giving that same payment method again. So I deleted the Chase info and tried to use the account again as the spire pay my bill method But a window now appeared saying I couldn’t do that. The info on the account was invalid! Now I know this isn’t true because I use this account all the time to pay all my store cards with no problems. I even triple checked to make sure the numbers I was inputting were correct, but to no avail, it still insisted that the account was invalid. So I now had no payment method to use to make a payment. So I called a 2nd rep and she got so frustrated trying to fix the issue that she just hung up on me. Just hung up as I was talking in the middle of a sentence. And I thought I was talking nicely to her. Anyway. nice. So I persisted and called one last time, a 3rd rep. After apologizing for the hang up, she did come up with one idea. Since it how hard is it to get a lowes credit card Sunday, she said she couldn’t help out but suggested I call back “next week” some time to speak to a tech person about the issue. She did also tell me that she was getting “a ton” of calls just like mine, so I wasn’t alone in this issue. So I call next week and see what happens then. Bottom line: Lowes is bad all around as far as I’m concerned. Bad reps and bad online website. Seriously considering closing my newly opened account. Home Depot is right next door to them in my area!!! I really don’t need these problems.

Terrible!

Credit Karma Member

Had this card for 6 years. 100% payment history. Got a letter that my $5000 limit was reduced to $1500, my balance at the time was $1200. Paid the balance in full to then find out they closed the account. After a call to customer service they said cards cannot be reinstated and I’m ineligible to reapply for the card for 1 year. Asked for the closing reason, was told “after reviewing my credit report” ? Nothing had changed on my end. Very surprising, the cs rep was also boarderline rude. Won’t be reapplying.

Ok, but not good or great

Credit Karma Member

Decided to use promo apply, all went fine -- but was billed within a week and hadn't even received the physisal card yet. ummm, what? Tried linking estatement to bank account - was told by CS that they do not offer that option. This is 2021. if a bank or large financial institution is unable to provide what one can do with multiple other vendors, then that speaks to their inability to keep up to date. Automation is good but when I call and end up transferred - a customer should not have to jump through hoops to provide all the information that was provided during the initial call in, the transfer should have handled all that already since it was confirmed prior to transfer. Unimpressive that they obviously can automate to collect rapidly, but are unable to provide automation to the consumer. Sure the ability to use for DIY is good but feels like they (Lowe's/Synchrony) are more for their own selves than the customer, where it matters.

Cant verify who I am

Credit Karma Member

I applied during a promotional period to get a 20 percent discount on interior door replacement organizations. I was denied on the basis they could not verify who I am? anybody else experiences this?

Lowered my limit

Credit Karma Member

I have had this card for about 5 years. I have a 800-820 credit score. Household income is 300k a year. Utilization is under 3%. They randomly lowered my limit from $6800 to $1500. I guess it is because I only used the card once. They never sent me a physical card, and I tried to have them look me up at the store, but they couldn’t.

Useful if emergency

Credit Karma Member

I have had a Lowe's card for over 5 years. In this 5 years they have lowered my limit 3 times and when I call they need to "re-run" my credit in order to increase it. They do, I take the hit, they put it back where it is. The worst part about the card is just that. Otherwise its useful in case of emergency.
