In a recent interview with Kerrang, Tom Morello is opening up about his friendship with Chris Cornell, and reflected on their days in Audioslave. The Rage Against The Machine guitarist then revealed that shortly after Audioslave had recorded their final album, Cornell had gone missing for several weeks. A text from Cornell eventually led to be the inspiration for his 2007 song, "The Garden of Gethsemane."
"Long before Chris passed, [there] was kind of a tumultuous time when he'd gone missing for a while," Morello said in the interview. "In the middle of the night after being missing for a month – or three months, or however long it was – he sent me a text that said, 'If you swallow a coin from the wishing well, your dreams will come true in heaven or hello.' I used that lyric as the centerpiece in this song for my friend who had one foot in the shadows."
Morello stated that "the garden of Gethsemane was where Jesus had his moment of doubt" while he was facing arrest and crucifixion.
While the guitarist has been remembering his earlier days in Audioslave, he has also been busy with his new bodies of work. Within the past few months, Morello has released not one, but two solo albums. The Atlas Underground Fire arrived in October, while its follow-up, The Atlas Underground Flood, arrived earlier this week. In the period between his back-to-back releases, Morello also stopped over at The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for a performance of his song "Hold the Line" featuring grandson.
The past few years have been m shadows songs for Avenged Sevenfold. Ever since drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan died in 2009, the band has seemed unsure of what direction to go in: 2010’s Nightmare featured the Rev’s final songwriting contributions and had one of his drumming idols playing his parts, Dream Theater’s Mike Portnoy. But Portnoy’s role was only ever to be temporary, and they quickly found another drummer in Arin Ilejay for 2013’s Hail to the King. That album found the band attempting to regroup, simplifying their sound and mining through their various hard rock and metal influences for new inspiration. But instead of sounding inspired, the band often veered too close to becoming a cheap copy of those influences rather than honoring them, and the songs were further weakened by Ilejay’s limp and rudimentary choice of drum parts. Sensing that things weren’t working out, the band has once again switched drummers, enlisting Brooks Wackerman of Bad Religion to fill the seat.
But Avenged Sevenfold had bigger ideas this time around than simply swapping drummers again. It was clear that the band was gearing up to release an album, if not this year, then probably the next. But details were scarce and besides the release of a single, “The Stage”, early in October, no one even knew if this thing had a title yet. The secrecy turned out to be for good reason: inspired by the surprise releases of Radiohead, Beyonce, Death Grips, and more, the band performed a live VR concert on October 27th before announcing that, hey, they had a new album and you could go buy it right at that moment. And in a first for this type of release, the band managed to get physical editions made and heroically avoided a leak up until the very last minute.
The album in question is The Stage, and clocks in as their longest album to date at a whopping 73 minutes. Immediately from the titular opening track, it’s clear that the band has gotten back on track. The opening title track starts off with ominous organ akin to “Critical Acclaim”, before launching into their classic limber guitar work and muscular riffing. It’s also clear that the band has re-embraced their progressive rock roots more than they have since 2005’s City of Evil, with the track easily hitting the how to solve a rubiks cube minute mark and moving through an array of harmonized leads, classic guitar riffs, and blazing solos. “The Stage” sets the tone for much of the album, as songs like “Paradigm” (a track that’s traditionally heavy and powerful for them), “God Damn” (a song that shows off Wackerman’s drumming chops and highlights why Ilejay was such a poor fit for the band), and “Sunny Disposition” feature much of these same traits, mixing power with structural variety. The latter track, “Sunny Disposition”, is their most interesting sonic experiment in years, combining the power of traditional metal riffs with a trumpet section in order to create an eerie, unsettling effect rarely seen in their catalog. Elsewhere, the band experiments with Faith No More-esque vocal melodies on “Creating God”, and is a great example of the vocal shift on this album. It seems like their hero worship on Hail to the King wasn’t entirely forgotten or without merit, as M. Shadows switches up his delivery to include not just his stock shouted tough guy rasp, but also hints of Layne Staley in his harmonies and Axl Rose in his highs. But perhaps the biggest risk on this album is its closing track, “Exist”. Clocking in at over 15 minutes, it stands out as the band’s longest track yet, and also features its longest instrumental section as well. Opening with swirling spacey synth leads, the band comes in full force with swept arpeggio runs and thick riffs that wouldn’t be unfamiliar to any Dream Theater fan. After 7 minutes of various guitar runs, organ sections, and chaotic soloing from Synyster Gates, the track finally takes a breather and allows gentle vocals to take over. The break doesn’t last long, though, as familiar pieces from the first 7 minutes slowly reintroduce themselves under Shadows’ vocals, until the song finally gives way to a monologue about the universe and the humans living in it from none other than Neil DeGrasse Tyson himself.
While it’s great that the band has finally found themselves again and have made a more progressive, more risky body of music, The Stage is not without its dead spots. Several of the songs on this album suffer from lacking a strong hook or vocal melody to hold them together, and as a result, songs like “Angels” and “Simulation” feel like plodding repeats of each other. Avenged has also always been a very vocally driven band despite all of their instrumental flair, so for them to switch it up here and use those instrumentals for much of the album’s melodic cues is – while not a bad thing – jarring and harder to get accustomed to considering their catalog of massively hooky songs. Sections like the impressive orchestral ending of “Roman Sky” are more immediately memorable than any of its vocal lines even after several listens, as are the aforementioned trumpets in “Sunny Disposition”. And outside of those motifs, in general most of the songs feel like they could have picked up an additional 5 or 10 BPM without suffering for it, as even album highlights like “Creating God” and “Sunny Disposition” don’t feel quite as urgent as they possibly could. In combination with most of the songs’ lengths, this ends up making the album feel a bit draggy and forgettable in its middle run.
But as a whole, The Stage is definitely a step back in the right direction for Avenged Sevenfold. They’ve embraced their core sound again without needing to outright copy their heroes, and are once again taking risks musically. And while not every song here is top tier material from them, overall The Stage feels like their most cohesive and mature work to date. So despite hitting a few stumbling blocks on this album, they feel more like growing pains as they move into a newer, more progressive sound, rather than a death knell for their creativity. For a band that has historically been so eager to dive into tired metal and edgy goth cliches, The Stage opens up an exciting new path for them to trod in the future, and it’s one that we can only hope they take till the end.

Isabella Manfredi – One Hit Wonder

It always m shadows songs like tempting m shadows songs when an artist so openly declares themselves to be a one-hit wonder, especially when said artist, like Isabella Manfredi, had a certain massive hit single that looms a lot larger than any of m shadows songs other work. Lyrically, this song stretches the relationship-as-a-band metaphor to its logical extension, with talk of B-sides, fading tracks and confessions being “off the record”. Musically, it is a spritely, Motown-infused wonder, with a breezy vocal melody dancing over a bouncy, infectious rhythm track. The cheerleader call-and-response and a bright piano that sounds like a toy in the best way makes this the sweetest breakup anthem of the summer. And that’s on the record.

Alex Cameron – Sara Jo
For fans of: Tears For Fears, Bruce Springsteen, Talk Talk.
Alex Cameron’s down-on-his-luck lounge singer shtick is one of the sharpest satires in music, and as his songwriting has improved, the joke has worn off, with Cameron now just writing future crooner standards, albeit still with more than a touch of dark comedy infused. “Who told my brother that his kids are gonna die from this vaccine?” he asks, in a song aimed at the titular Sara Jo, who has – unwisely, he explains – been messing with his family. The cooing female backing vocals are perfectly faceless for a song so indebted to the cheese of the 1980s, while Roy Molloy’s sparkling saxophone outro reeks of cigarette in once-plush carpets and cheap cologne.

Springtime – The Killing of the Village Idiot
For fans of: the Disintegration Loops, the Bad Seeds, Tom Waits.
Gareth Liddiard has made no secret of his devotion to Aussie instrumentalists Dirty Three: shades of their rambunctious clambering cacophonies show up in almost everything he creates. Here, he teamed up with Jim White, the band’s actual drummer, as well as multi-instrumentalist Chris Abrahams, to unleash another work of beauty and rage. Across nine vital minutes, Liddiard leads this unhinged trio through a work of simmering fury, chronicling the shameful tale of Australian special forces who slaughtered civilians in Afghanistan, as always exploring the various nuances and viewpoints without letting anyone off the hook. White’s military drumming marches along as Liddiard leads the troops towards slaughter, “another empire in the grave”. The relative anonymity of this project will probably see it overlooked, but this song deserves to sit with Shark Fin Blues at the very top of Liddiard’s enviable canon.

Caiti Baker – Spice
For fans of: Ariana Grande, James Blake, Kitty Pryde.
Caiti Baker has traversed country, folk, gospel and hip-hop in her storied career, but it’s the Darwin singer’s recent infatuation with slinky 90s-leaning R&B that sees her find her groove, with glitchy futuristic production slipping in perfectly with melodies that could belong on an En Vogue record. The relatively unchanging backing track allows Baker’s voice to be the real star: harmonising, gliding into beautiful falsetto and growling in turn, while bouncing deftly from one earworm melody to another as the dancefloor thump keeps time.

Hayley Mary – Bullet
For fans of: Deborah Conway, DMA’s, the Sundays.
Hayley Mary’s solo turn has been one of the most pleasing reinventions of the past few years. Where former band the Jezabels were epic and, dare I say it, a tad overblown, Mary’s solo music is shimmering indie pop, sitting in the same sun-dazed world as the Sundays and the Stone Roses. Mary’s full-throated vocals spray joy like a sprinkler and the jangling guitars are perfect for soundtracking the type of road trip where cracked windows are the only air conditioning. Bullet is the best track from her new surprise-release EP, produced by the twin powers of Johnny Took from DMA’s and Scott Horscroft, who once added sheen to Silverchair and the Sleepy Jackson.

Even – Cinnamon Edge
For fans of: the Who, You Am I, the Beatles.
For a band who wear their classic rock’n’roll hearts on their paisley sleeves, it comes as a surprise that until now Melbourne’s Even had never released a double album, a must-have for any retro-leaning discography. Cinnamon Edge opens disc two on Reverse Light Years, hanging off the type of riff the Stones haven’t been able to write since the 70s, settling into a vaguely Eastern chorus melody and splashing the odd Ringo tom fill to really rattle the wireless. Frontman Ashley Naylor is one of this country’s most underrated songwriters, with an incredibly high strike rate and an aversion to leaning on his laurels and going for prefab shipping container homes for sale in north carolina easy hook. Despite all the gleeful stomping on this track, there is a dark edge: the minor-y harmonies and the wailing vocals help round out what could have been mere the Who pastiche in lesser-skilled hands.

Courtney Barnett – Write a List of Things to Look Forward to
For fans of: Dick Diver, Kurt Vile, Parquet Courts.
It’s not surprising Courtney Barnett’s observationalist lyricism took a turn inwards during the recent pandemic, and like most self-talk, it can appear as both destructive and instructive. The song title implores someone, possibly herself, to write a list of things to look forward to, but such a list is absent here. Instead, Barnett bears witness to the dying world and pens a catalogue quite devoid of emotion. She watches the world burn and bemoans how “we can’t have nice things”, noting how our best efforts have fallen woefully short. A baby is born as a man lies dying. Life enters and exits. So it goes. Barnett sits and awaits a letter, the only thing seemingly keeping her afloat. She walks around shoegazing and sad. She never does write that list; maybe it’s something for her to look forward to.

Barkaa – King Brown
For fans of: Busta Rhymes, Nicki Minaj, L-Fresh the Lion.
As Barkaa tells us in this song, she’s come too far to fail. The 26-year-old Malyangapa and Barkindji rapper has battled and beaten drug addiction, homelessness and regular incarceration; during one prison stint she gave birth to her third child behind bars and became determined to beat her demons and build her life up. And boy, has she! She declares herself King Brown in this attitude-dripping tune, reclaiming a slur slung at her by a former lover, and few will dare to argue with her royal title after they’ve heard her in full force on this track. A salsa sample anchors what is a truly singular hip-hop single, with Barkaa’s fierce bark obliterating whatever her sorry ex called her as toxic and then kept on calling her phone. She still believes in love, just not the way it’s being offered to her. She’s royalty, remember. Bow to Barkaa.

Gang of Youths – Tend the Garden
For fans of: the Killers.
Devotees of Gang of Youths’ heart-filled epic Go Farther In Lightness will notice the drum machine first, then the heavy use of synths. By the middle of the song, they will be groovin’ to a sultry saxophone part not entirely divorced from the sound of Kenny G, which slides over a backing track reminiscent of Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On. Frontman David Le’aupepe has signalled through previous singles that the band’s forthcoming album will be a sonic right turn, but this marks the biggest shift away from the past so far, with a danceable beat anchoring Le’aupepe’s lyrics, which give voice to his father’s early life and the deeds he was forced to commit. It’s ambitious as hell, unrelentlessly earnest and a sure sign that, despite this song’s nostalgic bend, Gang of Youths aren’t looking back.

Logic1000 – 21

A mere four years ago, Sydneysider Samantha Poulter fell in love with dance music and taught herself how to create it with a computer and a set of tinny speakers. Since then, Four Tet played one of her songs to a packed Coachella crowd, Pete Tong declared her I Won’t Forget his essential new tune and a flood of major label offers took up residency in her inbox. 21 ends her new EP, In the Sweetness of You, and fittingly sounds like a late-night driving tune, the type of dark and steady throb that belongs to 3am, to driving on empty streets, the blur of reds and greens shining up from the wet roads. The dreamy synth swells that glide along are hypnotic and the layered production is world class.
