How to Cancel DirecTV in 5 Steps

We’ve broken down how to cancel DirecTV into 5 steps to make things as simple as possible, but we’ll also go over how to cancel DirecTV Now and how to waive DirecTV fees. Here’s a preview:

How To Cancel DirecTV

 1. Call Retention at 1-800-288-2020
 2. Prepare Your Excuse (like moving abroad)
 3. Stay Firm, Be Friendly, and Avoid Fees
 4. Return all your DirecTV Equipment
 5. Call Back and Confirm The Cancellation

Now let’s get a little more in depth!

1. Speak to Retention

Cancel DirecTV Retention

Okay, so the first (and maybe most important) opening step in your quest to cancel DirecTV is making sure you talk to the Retention Department.

First of all, speak to the retention department. There’s a direct phone number for the DirecTV retention department, but call their main number (800.288.2020 or check your bill), and follow the menu by telling them you want to cancel DirecTV. The menus change all the time and sometimes are confusing, but just stick to your guns. Don’t talk to technical support. Don’t talk to billing. Don’t say you’re just transferring service. All of those options will take you to the wrong (often overseas) department. Just say “Cancel Service.” That’s all you want: “cancel service.”

DirecTV Phone Number: 1-800-288-2020

Once you get to to a person, ask them if they’re with retention. If they’re not, ask to get transferred to retention. Literally nobody else will be helpful. But if you’ve made it to the promised land of retention, it’s time to get started cancelling your service.

2. Prepare Your Excuse

DirecTV Moving Away

The job of a DirecTV retention rep is to keep you from cancelling service, so you have to give them a reason why you’re cancelling. If you say “just ’cause,” they’ll keep badgering you about it. It’s impossible to know exactly what reasons will make your life easier, but a good rule of thumb is:

Say you’re cancelling for a reason they couldn’t possibly talk you out of.

Saying you’re moving to a non-DirecTV area is one of the big secrets to how to cancel DirecTV service. The tricky part there is that because they’re a satellite provider, there aren’t many non-DirecTV areas!

Stuck with DirecTV? If you don’t want to cancel, we’re here to help! We negotiate with DirecTV to get you a better rate without losing any service, guaranteed. We can even negotiate your ETF. Give it a try!

DirecTV is active in Latin America, so avoid saying you’re moving down old Mexico way. Europe tends to be a safe bet. You can do like Ken did and say you’re moving to England. Or, have a little fun with it–Timbuktu, Pulau, Liechtenstein–feel free to make up whatever you want. The important thing is that if you tell DirecTV you’re moving somewhere they don’t service, they’re not going to fight you.

There are a couple other good options if you don’t happen to know much about Timbuktu. One that may actually be true is that you’re just cutting the cord. Tons of DirecTV users are “cutting the cord” (cutting the dish?) as their way to cancel DirecTV but be warned, they may try to sell you on DirecTV Now or AT&T Internet upgrades!

It’s tempting to tell the rep all the reasons you’re actually cancelling your DirecTV service. Don’t get sucked in. Maybe you’re quitting because you’re tired of the service going out when it rains or dealing with their customer service department, but those are problems they can promise to fix! You want a reason they can’t fix. And baby, Timbuktu is that reason.

3. Stay Firm and Be Friendly

DirecTV Cancelling Friendly

DirecTV is going to try to keep you from cancelling. They will try discounts, they will offer a service transfer, they’ll offer free NFL Sunday Ticket (actually, that one is a pretty good deal) or they’ll try to get you to at least switch to AT&T services (it’s the same company!) They are especially going to push you towards a new contract for a lower rate. It only hurts their number if you cancel today so they may just tell you to sleep on it. Be firm in your conviction to cancel—they’ll jump on any hesitation or questions—but remember to always stay as friendly and polite as possible.

Pro Tip: A lot of DirecTV accounts have contracts already on them. Sometimes that can mean cancellation fees as high as $480 PLUS a Deactivation Fee of $15! This can be a big barrier to cancelling DirecTV, but don’t be afraid. We’ve written a handy guide to getting out of every cent of those “Early Termination Fees.” But be warned, it isn’t easy.

The DirecTV retention rep you’re talking to holds your very fate in their powerful, dangerous hands. They have the ability to shut off the service early even though you’re still having people over for the game before the disconnect date or to turn of paper bills but keep charging you and get you sent to collections. Believe me, we’ve seen it all. But be nice and friendly and helpful? They’ll go out of their way to make sure your cancellation is scheduled correctly and they’ll get boxes sent out for your equipment. But you need to prepare for both scenarios. That’s the next step.

4. How to Return DirecTV Equipment
(otherwise, they’ll keep charging you!)

Returning DirecTV Equipment

Okay, you’ve actually done it! You’ve cancelled DirecTV! It’s all over, right? Wrong! Until you return your DirecTV equipment, DirecTV still has it’s claws in you. They’ll charge you all pay att internet bill without login of fees and it can get pretty scary. The rule here is basically everything that says DirecTV on it other than your dish—remotes, access cards, and receivers. Just so you know the whole deal, we’re including the relevant portion of your DirecTV agreement:

What happens when I stop being a customer? If you cease to be our customer (whether voluntarily or involuntarily), you must contact DIRECTV within 7 days of termination of your base level of programming to arrange for an Equipment return kit or kits, and instructions on how to return your Leased Equipment [DIRECTV Receiver(s), Genie Mini(s), access card(s), and remote(s)]. Leased Equipment must be returned in good working order, normal wear and tear excepted. If we haven’t received your Leased Equipment within 21 days of termination of your base level of programming, or if the Equipment is returned in damaged condition, we will charge you $45 for each standard DIRECTV Receiver, HD Receiver, and each Genie Mini, and $135 for each DVR, HD DVR, and Genie HD DVR, so please attend to your Equipment return promptly. We reserve the right to charge these fees to the credit or debit card you have on file with us. If you are leasing a DVR, HD or HD DVR Receiver and decide to terminate HD Access and/or any Advanced Receiver Service, as applicable, you agree to return that Advanced Equipment (and replace with standard receiver(s) if pay att internet bill without login are not terminating your base level of programming), in accordance with this paragraph, or we will charge you the stated fees. Visit directv.com/legal or call 800.531.5000 for details.

Fortunately, DirecTV equipment returns are pretty straightforward. They send you a prepaid box and you drop it off at the post office or have them pick it up. Be warned, you can’t just take it to an AT&T store, though. Fortunately, you don’t have to return your satellite dish, so don’t try to fit that in the box. DirecTV has some useful links for recycling it though!

5. Call DirecTV AGAIN to confirm

Calling DirecTV

Okay, so here’s the horrible secret to this guide: it isn’t foolproof. DirecTV agents make mistakes all the time and even if you think you’ve gotten the disconnect order set up or the equipment returned, they might have entered it into their system wrong. Oh and don’t get us started on the system—even if they did try to do everything right, sometimes your disconnect order just glitches out anyway.

Fortunately, there’s a (somewhat) easy solution to this: call DirecTV back. Once you think you’re totally done cancelling, give them another call and confirm all the details. Ask about whether there is equipment still listed or a balance that is still unpaid. Ask about any early termination fees. If there are any problems, double check again after you fix them. It’s tedious, but it’s the easiest way to make sure you don’t open your mail one day to a letter from collections. But if you do that and all goes well, you’re a success! You’ve learned how to cancel DirecTV and they only thing to do now is to celebrate!

You Cancelled DirecTV!

DirecTV Pineapple

Hey, that’s great work! You now know how to cancel DirecTV! Congratulations! Do you feel accomplished? Are you excited to live in this brave new world you’ve built without DirecTV?

Pay Without Signing In Att

How To Know If Someone's Logging In To Your Facebook Account

Have you noticed any unusual pay att internet bill without login on your Facebook page? Do you see a post, like, or update that isn't yours? This may indicate that someone else is accessing your Facebook account and that you have been hacked. Of course, you can't, so here's how to find out. Updates and entries that don't belong to you, who doesn't follow or like your behavior, messages sent to people you haven't written to, and dangerous Facebook emails are all common signs of hacked Facebook accounts. The subject line of the email would be something like this: You recently logged into your Facebook account from a computer, mobile device or other location that you have never used before. We have temporarily locked your account for your safety until you can review this activity and ensure that no one else is using it without your permission. 'Have you used a new device or a strange place to access Facebook?' These emails are often sent by mistake, so if you receive an email, don't panic right now. You may receive many of these emails if you use a VPN, mobile device, or travel. There are a few ways to see your Facebook account has been hacked. Check if someone is using your Facebook account If you suspect that someone is using your Facebook account, you should take immediate action. Considering how deeply social media is ingrained in our lives, the sooner you can stop any criminal activity, the less harm is done. Fortunately, Facebook is ahead of the game and provides an easy way to see who has logged into your account and when. 1. Go to Facebook and log in as usual. To access Settings, select the small down arrow on the top menu. 4. Select 'Settings & Privacy' from the drop-d Go to the 'Where you are logged in' section and click on the text link that says 'See more&#39. When you select the 'See More' option, a list of all the devices and locations where your Facebook account has been accessed will appear. Keep in mind that the location isn't accurate, so it's possible to show the city closest to you instead of your hometown. If you come across devices you're unfamiliar with, you can easily log them out. All you have to do is click on the three dots on the right side of the screen. Select 'Log Out' from the drop-down menu on the top right pay att internet bill without login the device. Finally, you can log out of all your devices at once. At the bottom of the same page select 'Log out of all sessions&#39. Note:: Before logging out of sessions, change your password as intruders can easily log back in. We'll show you how to change your password in the following sections. Keeping your Facebook account secure You should log out of your Facebook account, change your password, and secure your account if you suspect someone is using it. If you used the steps above to see if someone has logged into your account, you can log them out by selecting the text link that says "Log out of all sessions." But don't do it now. Let's start by getting ready. 2. Return to Security and log out of the Session window. 3. Open a new tab in your browser and go to the Security & Login page. 4. In the new tab, next to Change Password, select 'Edit&#39. Fill in the blank with the new password, but do not save the changes yet. Make sure the password is strong. Then press the 'Save Changes' button.’ 6. Return to the previous tab and select Log out of all sessions. If necessary, confirm. 7. In the Change Password tab, click Save Changes. In essence, you open two browser windows, each containing a copy of the security and login page. You can use one to end the session and the other to change your password. You need to act quickly because you don't know whether it is a bot or not. or a person who has access to the account. You kick out whoever is using your account by forcing the session to end. AT&T will pay $60 million over fake unlimited data ‘bait and switch scam’

AT&T is being punished at last for its shady claims of plans with “unlimited data” but were in reality nothing of the kind: The company has agreed to a $60 million settlement with the FTC, which has pursued the case for years. Some 3.5 million affected customers can expect partial refunds — little more than pocket money, but it’s something.

The complaint was filed almost exactly five years ago, after customer complaints from previous years had piled up. AT&T, after offering truly unlimited data plans for a few years, made changes to how the plans worked but not to how they were advertising. Starting in 2011, the company began throttling to a fraction of the speed they normally got customers with “unlimited data” who hit data caps. We’re talking kilobits here.

Naturally that’s not quite in line with the “unlimited” claims, and some people took AT&T and others to court early on over it. But the FTC’s 2014 complaint indicated that the feds were taking this seriously.

Because the complaint was so obviously true, AT&T attempted to thwart it via process, claiming that the net neutrality rules adopted in 2015 moved the authority to regulate mobile carriers from the FTC to the FCC, retroactively mooting the case. They pursued this ridiculous argument until last year, when a federal court slapped it down and the FTC’s process was allowed to continue unimpeded. And here we are 18 months later with a $60 million settlement.

“AT&T’s bait-and-switch scam is a good window into the many harms that result from dominant companies operating without the discipline of meaningful competition,” said FTC Chairman Rohit Chopra in a spicy statement accompanying the announcement. “Their market power, financial resources, and one-sided information gives them license to ignore their own contractual obligations while aggressively enforcing every little clause in the fine print. Consumers can accept the bad deal, walk away, or fight it, but each choice carries a cost, with dominant firms prevailing almost every time.”

Although $60 million is a drop in the bucket for a company the size of AT&T, the FTC action and other pressure also put executives on warning for prioritizing profits over customers with scams like this one.

“The company could have upheld its obligations to its customers by making the right infrastructure investments,” Chopra continued. “It certainly had the money to do so. In 2012, as the company boasted to investors that customers were fleeing its unlimited plan for tiered plans, it spent more on share buybacks than it invested in its wireless network. The bottom line is that AT&T fleeced its customers to enrich its executives and its investors.”

Unfortunately those customers will remain fleeced, as there are some 3.5 million of them and only $60 million to distribute. This will be divided between current and former AT&T customers as follows, according to the proposed settlement:

 • $7.5 million to be split by current AT&T customers who experienced throttling to 128 kbps
 • $29.7 million to be split by current AT&T customers who experienced throttling to 256 or 512 kbps
 • $6.3 million to be split by former AT&T customers who experienced throttling to 128 kbps
 • $16.5 million to be split by former AT&T customers who experienced throttling to 256 or 512 kbps

All this will be done “pro rata,” so if you were an early adopter who got throttled to 128 kbps every month of your year-long contract, you’ll get a bigger share than someone who only went over once and got throttled to 512 kbps.

There’s no need to fill anything out or submit a claim; if you’re currently an AT&T customer, you’ll get a bill credit, and if you’re a former customer you should get a check in the mail.

Naturally AT&T is barred from pulling anything like this again: The company can’t claim something is “unlimited” without prominent disclosure of the actual limitations on the service.

How To Know If Someone's Logging In To Your Facebook Account

Have you noticed any unusual activity on your Facebook page? 4. Select 'Settings & Privacy' from the drop-d Go to the 'Where you are logged in' section and click on the text link that says 'See more'.. Select 'Log Out' from the drop-down menu on the top right of the device. Finally, you can log out of all your devices at once. At the bottom of the same page select 'Log out of all sessions'. 4. In the new tab, next to Change Password, select 'Edit'.. . You can update your password immediately by pressing Save Changes. Hopefully, this will be quick enough to prevent the hacker from logging in again. Changing the password can sometimes end the request for all sessions, but it appears to be hit-or-miss. While there are a few extra steps involved, it always works.
