Head Coach John Stiegelmeier

John Stiegelmeier, the winningest football coach in South Dakota State history, has built the Jackrabbit program into a yearly contender within the Missouri Valley Football Conference and the Football Championship Subdivision.

Overall, Stiegelmeier has led the Jackrabbits to a 166-105 record (.613 winning percentage) in 23 seasons. With Coach Stig at the helm, SDSU has reached the FCS playoffs nine times (2009, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018,2019) and is one of only two FCS programs to reach the postseason each of the past eight seasons. The Jackrabbits won playoff contests in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018, and have finished in the top 25 of both major FCS polls in 11 of the last 14 years.

Stiegelmeier’s 66 victories in MVFC play rank third in league history, while his 98 overall wins since joining the league in 2008 are fourth among all-time league coaches. SDSU has never had a losing record in MVFC play in the 12 seasons it has played in what has proven to be the toughest FCS conference.

During the 2017 season, South Dakota State reached new heights, setting a single-season school record with 11 victories and reaching the FCS semifinals for the first time. The Jackrabbits tied for second place in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with a 6-2 record and defeated eventual national champion North Dakota State for the second year in a row to retain the Dakota Marker. SDSU hosted — and won — two playoff games after being seeded fifth in the 24-team field.

SDSU ended the 2017 campaign third in the STATS FCS media poll and fourth in the FCS coaches’ rankings. Five Jackrabbits received All-America recognition, highlighted by unanimous selection Dallas Goedert at tight end.

The Jackrabbits repeated much of the same success in 2018, posting 10 victories en route to a second consecutive FCS semifinal appearance. SDSU was ranked in the top 10 all season, climbing as high as No. 2 in the STATS FCS media poll for two weeks. The Jackrabbits ended the season with third-place rankings in both the media and coaches’ polls for their highest-ever final rankings.

During the 2019 season, SDSU continued to rank among the FCS elite, maintaining a top-five ranking for much of the campaign. The Jackrabbits earned north central baptist medical records No. 7 seed in the FCS playoffs before ending the year with an 8-5 overall record.

The 2016 Bruce Craddock Missouri Valley Football Conference Coach of the Year, Stiegelmeier led the Jackrabbits to their first league title that season, finishing with a 7-1 record in league play and earning a first-round bye in the FCS playoffs.

Stiegelmeier passed Ralph Ginn (113-89-9 record from 1947-68) atop the Jackrabbit career victories list on Sept. 20, 2014, when the Jackrabbits defeated Wisconsin-Oshkosh, 41-3, at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. Coach Stig also was presented with the Ralph Ginn Award for Coaching Excellence, which is presented annually to an SDSU alumnus, by his alma mater during the 2014 season.

Under Stiegelmeier’s leadership, SDSU has posted 14 winning seasons in the school’s 16 campaigns at the FCS (formerly Division I-AA) level, compiling a 124-72 record (.633 winning percentage) since moving to the FCS ranks in 2004. Overall, the Jackrabbits have had a winning record in 19 of Stiegelmeier’s 23 years as head coach, and have a 66-30 record (.688 winning percentage) in Missouri Valley Football Conference games.

After consecutive 5-6 seasons in 2010 and 2011, the Jackrabbits rebounded in 2012 with their second postseason appearance in four years. SDSU finished the 2012 campaign with a 9-4 overall record, tying the single-season school record for wins. The Jackrabbits also hosted — and won — their first-ever playoff game, how to embed a vimeo video in powerpoint 2010 Eastern Illinois, 58-10, at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium. SDSU was later eliminated by eventual national champion North Dakota State. In 2012, the Jackrabbits were ranked seven of the final eight weeks of the season and ended the campaign ranked 14th in the Sports Network media poll.

In 2013, the Jackrabbits reached the postseason in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history. Despite being ranked in the preseason top 10, the Jackrabbits found themselves with a 4-4 record entering the final month of the season. SDSU responded, however, reeling off four consecutive wins in MVFC play to again earn an at-large berth in the FCS playoffs.

SDSU opened the 2013 playoffs with a dominant defensive performance, posting a 26-7 road win at No. 8 Northern Arizona, before falling 41-17 at third-ranked Eastern Washington a week later. The Jackrabbits again tied the school record for wins, finishing with a 9-5 overall mark, and ending up 13th in the Sports Network media poll and 14th in the FCS Coaches Poll.

The Jackrabbits would end the season ranked 12th in the Sports Network media poll and south dakota state football division by the FCS coaches.

SDSU’s march to its fourth consecutive postseason berth began with the program’s first-ever win over a Football Bowl Subdivision opponent at the Division I level in the 2015 season opener at Kansas. The 41-38 victory helped propel the Jackrabbits to an undefeated non-conference slate and the program’s then-highest ranking in an FCS poll at fifth in the STATS media poll.

A three-game winning streak to start the second half of the league season, which included a 25-20 victory over second-ranked Illinois State, secured another postseason berth. However, injuries took their toll late in the season as SDSU dropped the regular season finale in double overtime at Western Illinois and a late comeback in the FCS playoff matchup at Montana came up short, ending the Jackrabbits’ 2015 campaign with an 8-4 overall record and respective national rankings of 15th and 16th in the STATS media and FCS coaches’ polls.

The 2016 season brought a move to Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium and with it the Jackrabbits' first MVFC title. The Jackrabbits finished as runner-up in the Missouri Valley Football Conference with a 7-1 record and finished the season 8-4 overall. SDSU led for much of its playoff game at top-seeded Montana, before falling 61-48 to the eventual national runner-up Grizzlies. Ranked for the entire season, including appearing in the top 10 for two weeks, the Jackrabbits finished the 2009 campaign with an 11th-place showing in both major polls.

In leading SDSU to the GWFC title, Stiegelmeier was named conference coach of the year and was honored by the American Football Coaches Association as the FCS Region 5 Coach of the Year. In addition, he was named as one of five finalists in the FCS for the 2007 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year Award.

After posting back-to-back 6-5 seasons in 2004 and 2005 to begin their Division I pursuits, the Jackrabbits rose another notch in 2006 as they compiled a 7-4 overall record, finishing the season ranked 21st in the final FCS poll conducted by The Sports Network. The Selby, South Dakota, native first became acquainted with the Jackrabbit football program as a student assistant under John Gregory during SDSU’s only NCAA Division II playoff season in 1979. After graduating from SDSU with degrees in mathematics and physical education, Stiegelmeier enrolled in graduate school at the University of Northern Iowa, where he served on the coaching staff of a Panther squad which posted a 7-4 mark in 1981.

Stiegelmeier coached at Eau Claire (Wis.) North High School from 1981-84, then returned to his home state as defensive coordinator, secondary coach and recruiting coordinator at Northern State from 1984-87.

Stiegelmeier returned to his alma mater in July 1988, joining Wayne Haensel’s SDSU coaching staff as secondary coach and recruiting coordinator. After Haensel stepped down following the 1990 season, Stiegelmeier was elevated to defensive coordinator by new head coach Mike Daly.

In six seasons as defensive coordinator, Stiegelmeier helped guide the Jackrabbits to a 41-23 record. SDSU turned in a winning record all six seasons, including five seven-win seasons. South Dakota State football tries to move forward after shocking loss to rival USD Coyotes

How does a team bounce back from one of the most shocking losses in program history?

That’s what South Dakota State must do this week, as the Jackrabbits host North Dakota in the regular season finale, seven days after they were stunned by a walk-off Hail Mary against rival South Dakota, a play that continues to play over and over on highlight shows across the nation and one that threatens to derail the Jackrabbits’ plans tri city national bank check balance a national championship run.

Leaving aside the lingering effects of losing a rivalry game the Jacks had in hand and should not have lost, there’s much at stake Saturday, too.

The Jacks are 7-3, but one of those wins came against Lindenwood, a Division II team. Though the Lions finished the year 9-2, won their conference and are headed to the playoffs, Division II wins don’t count toward the FCS playoff resume. So SDSU is, in effect, 6-3.

More: South Dakota football takes down SDSU with a game-winning Hail Mary

Does that make Saturday’s game against the Fighting Hawks a must-win? Not necessarily. A loss would leave SDSU at 6-4, and they have wins over Colorado State (an FBS team) and North Dakota State, who were ranked No. 2 at the time and are currently No. 4. Teams with six wins have been selected for the FCS playoffs multiple times, and SDSU, by way of two high-level wins and the stature of the Missouri Valley Football Conference, not to mention being national runners-up in the spring, would probably squeak in.

But SDSU would rather not chance it. Winning not only assures them a playoff berth but possibly gets them a home game, and, depending on what else happens around the country, could maybe still have them in the conversation for the final seed.

But at this point, perhaps more than anything, the Jacks need a win to boost their confidence and help shake off the sting of the Hail Mary loss to USD.

More: South Dakota's last-second win over South Dakota State plants Coyotes among MVFC's best

“The energy in the room (Monday) as we gathered did not indicate we have a hangover the lowcountry food bank the game or a continued disappointment,” said coach John Stiegelmeier. “We’ve preached — win or lose — to play in the present. I think our guys are trained to do that. It’s not that the game didn’t mean a ton and it wasn’t disappointing, but we’ve got to move on, and we’ve done that. I’m tired of talking about it and our players are tired of talking about it. That’s why this game is good medicine for that. We can eliminate that from our mind and focus on UND.”

It would’ve been hard for Stiegelmeier to gather his team after a loss like that and not acknowledge, in some way, that it was not a typical loss. But in the interest of building up his team’s confidence rather than dwelling on it, the coach tried to remind his team what they’ve shown themselves capable of this season.

“For the most part we approach most of the weeks the same, the thing I did differently in the team meeting was I showed them around 13 or 14 clips from the Colorado State and NDSU games,” Stiegelmeier said. “Just to remind them of the type of team we have been and still are. Just to try to get them to focus on playing their best football.”

In North Dakota, the Jacks face an opponent they should beat, but that was true of each of the three teams that have defeated them this year. The Hawks are 5-5, coming off a 14-7 home win over Illinois State, their second win in a row. UND is 1-4 on the road farmers state bank waupaca year and does not have a win against a ranked opponent. In Valley play they’ve defeated Western Illinois, Youngstown State and Illinois State, while losing to North Dakota State, South Dakota, Southern Illinois and Missouri State. However, all four of those losses to ranked teams were one-score games. The Hawks have been close, and they were the only team to beat SDSU in the spring season until the title game.

That was a frustrating loss for the Jacks, as they jumped out to an early lead, missed an opportunity to build on it and faltered from there, watching the Hawks gather themselves and roll to a 28-17 win that helped them on their way to a share of the Valley title and a playoff spot, where they beat Missouri State in the first round before falling to James Madison in the quarterfinals.

With a 5-5 mark and no real quality wins, the Hawks aren’t likely to be considered for a playoff spot even if they beat the Jacks, but they might as well take their best shot and see what happens.

“None of us are on the playoff committee, so who knows what’s going to happen,” Stiegelmeier said. “But we only have six wins. I think more important than that – we have five days left guaranteed together as a football team. We have 12 super seniors that have five days left of their careers guaranteed. I don’t care who you’re playing, that should motivate you to give everything you’ve got. That will motivate them to give everything they’ve got.”

South Dakota State vs. Colorado State Football Prediction and Preview

The Colorado State Rams are set to welcome the FCS national runner-up South Dakota State Jackrabbits to Fort Collins on Friday to kick off the 2021 college football season. Because of schedule disruptions, Colorado State head coach Steve Addazio only had four opportunities to lead the Rams onto the field in his first year at the helm, so it’s hard to say how much we learned from the team’s 1-3 record. The 34-24 victory over rival Wyoming was important, but Colorado State wasn’t very competitive in losses to Fresno State, Boise State, and San Diego State.

Related: Ranking All 84 College Football Games in Week 1

The Jackrabbits didn’t play at all in 2020 but excelled during the 2021 spring season. From Feb. 19 to May 16, South Dakota State posted an 8-2 overall record, including a 5-1 mark in Missouri Valley Conference play that earned the Jacks the top seed in the 16-team FCS playoffs. The Jackrabbits beat heavyweight North Dakota State in the regular-season finale and then made a run to the FCS National Championship in Frisco, Texas, but lost a heartbreaker to Sam Houston 23-21 to fall short of the program’s first national title.

After nine straight playoff appearances and the near-miss last season, South Dakota State enters the season ranked No. 3 in the NCAA FCS poll and No. 4 according to Athlon Sports. In other words, the Jacks should be a very dangerous matchup for their FBS hosts.

South Dakota State at Colorado State

Kickoff: Friday, Sept. 3 at 9 p.m. ET
TV: FS1
Spread: South Dakota State -3

When South Dakota State Has the Ball

Chris Oladokun is expected to start for the Jackrabbits at quarterback, replacing the injured duo of Mark Gronowski and J’Bore Gibbs. Gibbs was the starter in 2019, and Gronowski completed 57.4 percent of his passes for 1,565 yards and 15 touchdowns with only three interceptions in the spring. He added 577 rushing yards, which ranked third behind running backs Isaiah Davis (818) and Pierre Strong Jr. (707), and scored seven times on the ground, second only to Davis (10). The job opened for Oladokun, a former three-star prospect, because of knee injuries to Grownowski and Gibbs. Oladokun threw for 2,064 yards and 18 touchdowns and added 493 rushing yards and eight touchdowns at Samford in 2019. He also appeared in eight games for South Florida from 2017-18.

Other than Oladokun, nearly the entire roster returns from South Dakota State’s runner-up squad. Davis and Strong are back in the backfield, as are top receivers Jaxon Janke (32 rec., 473 yds., 6 TDs) and Jadon Janke (21, 425, 5). Given his experience and skillset, as well as the talent around him, Oladokun should keep the Jacks rolling offensively.

When Colorado State Has the Ball

We didn’t get a full look at the Colorado State offense in 2020, but the bottom-line numbers were discouraging for Addazio, who likes to win games on the ground. The Rams averaged just 124.0 rushing yards per game and 3.18 yards per carry, which ranked No. 105 and No. 113, respectively, nationally. Marcus McElroy Jr. scored three rushing touchdowns to lead the team, but he managed only 2.7 yards per attempt, gaining 110 yards on 41 carries. A’Jon Vivens led the way with 210 yards on 49 attempts, and scored once, but was still held to 4.29 yards on average. Both McElroy and Vivens return, and Addazio added David Bailey as a transfer from Boston College. Bailey led the Eagles with 503 rushing yards and seven touchdowns last season and ran for 844 yards and seven scores for Addazio in 2019.

Quarterback Todd Centeio started the opener against Fresno State and ran for 80 yards on 13 attempts (6.2 ypc) but played sparingly the rest of the way and finished with 92 rushing yards on 25 carries (3.68). Centeio was anointed the 2021 starter shortly after Patrick O’Brien transferred to Washington. His athleticism will be an asset, but he must improve as a passer. Last year, Centeio completed 14 of 36 attempts (38.9 percent) for 207 yards with one touchdown and one interception. He averaged 5.8 yards per attempt, which would have ranked 99th nationally had he played enough to qualify for the national leaderboard. However, with All-Mountain West receiver Dante Wright and tight end Trey McBride returning, Centeio will have one of the best pass-catching duos in the league. McBride led the team with 22 receptions, 330 yards, and four touchdowns in 2020. Wright was close behind with 20 catches for 315 yards.

Final Analysis

It’s extremely rare for an FCS program to be favored over an FBS opponent, but the Rams opened as an underdog according to oddsmakers. South Dakota State has played well in these games in recent years, losing to Minnesota 28-21 in 2019 (when the Gophers finished 11-2), hanging with eventual Liberty Bowl champion TCU in a 59-41 loss in 2016, and knocking off Kansas 41-38 in 2015. It’s very possible the 2021 squad is better than any of those. In addition to a well-stocked offense, nearly every defensive contributor returns from the unit that held opponents to 15.0 points per game last season.

Nevertheless, Colorado State has a union savings bank com advantage. The Rams have two of the top offensive weapons in the Mountain West in Wright and McBride, and Addazio has improved the roster through the transfer portal. CSU also has a solid defense. Led by Scott Patchan (a Miami transfer who had 5.5 sacks for the Rams last season), Manny Jones, and Dequan Jackson (two each), Colorado State ranked among the national leaders in sack rate (11.6 percent of pass attempts resulted in sacks).

The Jacks will test Colorado State, but the Rams can avoid the embarrassment of losing to an FCS opponent – even if South Dakota State is one of the very best.

Prediction: Colorado State 28, South Dakota State 24

Last-minute TD lifts Sam Houston State to wild win over South Dakota State in FCS championship game

FRISCO, Texas — For as long as they live, whether they win a national championship later in their careers or not, the South Dakota State football team that went to Texas on Sunday to complete the 2020 season in the spring of 2021 will forever be asking what if.

What if the weather had been better early?

What if freshman quarterback Mark Gronowski hadn't got hurt on the first series of the game?

What if they had made one more stop?

Those are all questions that will haunt SDSU's players, coaches and fans throughout what will be a very short offseason.

But it was the Jackrabbits themselves who insisted all week that applying an asterisk to the FCS spring season was petty and disrespectful. So there can be no 'yeah, buts'. Yes, just about everything that could've gone wrong for South Dakota State on Sunday at Toyota Stadium did through the first two-thirds of the game, but Sam Houston won, 23-21. They are the national champs.

With the win, Sam Houston claims its first FCS championship. Their christmas tree in the park san jose, K.C. Keeler, becomes the first coach ever to lead two different schools to the FCS title (Delaware, 2003). And the Jacks, who had won seven in a row to reach Frisco for the first time in program history, will have to settle for having finally taken that step, while their national championship trophy case remains empty.

Eric Schmid's 10-yard pass to Ife Adeyi with 16 seconds left propelled the Bearkats to the win, minutes after SDSU had come back from a 10-point deficit to take a 21-17 lead.

It's hard to argue the Bearkats (10-0) aren't deserving champs. They beat the defending champs (North Dakota State), top-ranked team (James Madison) and top-seed (SDSU) to win the title.

Quarterback Eric Schmid delivered a heroic performance, throwing for 209 yards and three touchdowns, rushing for 54, and taking a beating in doing it.

WATCH: South Dakota State’s Isaiah Davis unleashed a devastating stiff-arm

Ramon Jefferson rushed for 96 yards for SHSU and Jequez Ezzard caught 10 passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns.

Isaiah Davis did everything possible to keep the Jacks alive, rushing for 178 yards and three touchdowns, including a late 85-yarder that, even in defeat, will go down in Jackrabbit history as an all-time run.

But the Jacks (8-2) were left fairly one-dimensional without Gronowski, whose status going forward will be a major question mark for an SDSU program that will have to pick up the pieces quickly to reload for another shot this fall.

Nevertheless, Colorado State has a talent advantage.

South Dakota State Jackrabbits

Summit League logo in South Dakota State's colors

The South Dakota State Jackrabbits are the 19 intercollegiate teams representing South Dakota State University that compete in the U.S. National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I (for football: Football Championship Subdivision). SDSU is currently a member of the Summit League, the Missouri Valley Football Conference, the Big 12 Conference and Varsity Equestrian. The university won numerous conference championships and several national titles including the NCAA College Division national title in men's basketball in 1963 and the NCAA Division II national title in women's basketball in 2003.

The Jackrabbit football team qualified for the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision playoffs in 2009 (losing to Montana I in the first round), the school's second year of FCS post-season eligibility since moving from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I. The Jackrabbits qualified for the FCS playoffs in 2012, winning their first game against Ohio Valley Conference champions Eastern Illinois before falling to Missouri Valley Football Conference rival North Dakota State, the eventual national champion.

The 2011–2012 season marked the fifth-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament for the Jackrabbit women's basketball team, capping a season in which the Jackrabbits won the regular-season Summit League title and their fifth consecutive Summit League Tournament title.

The Jackrabbit men qualified for its first NCAA Tournament in the 2012–13 season following a second-place regular season finish in the Summit League and winning the Summit League Tournament title.

The Jackrabbit baseball team qualified for the 2013 NCAA Tournament and traveled to Eugene, Oregon, losing the first game to eventual regional champion Oregon and then being eliminated by the University of San Francisco in a 13-inning defensive battle.

In 2018, the school had its first Division I champion wrestler with Seth Gross.

Athletic facilities[edit]

South Dakota State has some of the best athletic facilities in their region, The Summit League, and the Missouri Valley Football Conference. Some of the university's venues compete as some of the finest in the nation (Sanford Jackrabbit Athlete Complex and the Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium).

  • Frost Arena is the 6,500 seat on campus facility that houses men's and women's basketball, and women's volleyball teams. Frost Arena is currently on the master plan to add more modern concessions, restrooms and seating, as well as several building additions which include a wrestling practice facility, and a multi court arena that would double for basketball and volleyball practices as well as a competition venue for wrestling and volleyball.
  • Erv Huether Field is home of the Jackrabbit baseball team. Seats 600 spectators.
  • Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, the on-campus football stadium with a capacity for 19,340 fans, opened for the 2016 season.
  • Fishback Soccer park. seats 1500 spectators. Also on the master athletic plans are an on campus soccer stadium and practice fields.
  • 2025 master plan calls for an aquatics competition and practice facility.
  • Dykhouse Student Athlete Center. Located in the north end zone of Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. Houses football staff, sports medicine and athletic training.
  • Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex, Connected to the north side of the Dykhouse Athlete Center. it boasts 149,284-square feet of practice space and one of five 300-meter tracks in NCAA Division 1.
  • Stanley J. Marshall HPER Center Pool. The six-lane competition pool is 25 yards long. A diving well allows for 1- and 3-meter competitions.

The Dykhouse Student Athlete Center, the home of Jackrabbit football, opened prior to the 2010 football season. The Sanford Jackrabbit Athlete Complex, a state-of-the-art indoor practice and competition facility opened October 11, 2014. It is immediately north of and attached to the Dykhouse Student Athlete Center. The SJAC has bleacher seating for up to 1,000 spectators and can be used for track practice and track meets, football practice, softball and baseball practice, and other events within the SDSU athletic department. It has been recently furbished with a state-of-the-art indoor golf practice area consisting of 4500 square feet of practice space, with slope, sand traps and simulators for rainy weather and the winter months. When completed, the 149,284-square foot facility was the largest indoor practice facility in Division I athletics and features an eight-lane, 300-meter track, one of only five collegiate indoor tracks of that size in the nation. Inside the track is an 80-yard football field plus end zones at each end. The turf in the facility is soy-based Astroturf. The SJAC has areas for sports medicine including rehab space, a training room, additional weight-training facilities, hydrotherapy, a football team room, offices and academic advising facilities. The Dykhouse Student Athlete Center is immediately north of the new stadium for Jackrabbit football, the 19,340-capacity Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium, opened in the Fall of 2016. The Dykhouse Stadium was constructed for easy expansion to 22,500 and the potential for future expansion to a capacity of 40,000. Like the SJAC, the turf in the Stadium is soy-based Astroturf.

In November 2018, SDSU finished construction on a new practice facility connected to Frost Arena that contains 2 full-size practice courts for men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball.

Funds are currently being raised for a wrestling practice facility.

A program-best six Jackrabbits received All-America recognition in 2018.

During the 2019 season, SDSU continued to rank among the FCS elite, maintaining a top-five ranking for much of the campaign. The Jackrabbits earned the No.

The Jackrabbits also hosted — and won — their first-ever playoff game, defeating Eastern Illinois, 58-10, at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium.

A surge in the final month of the 2014 season vaulted the Jackrabbits into the FCS playoffs for the third season in a row. SDSU won its final three regular season games to earn an at-large berth and extended its winning streak to four with a 47-40 victory in the cold and snow at Montana State in the FCS opening round.

In second-round action, SDSU appeared on the verge of knocking off three-time defending national champion North Dakota State, taking a lead late in the fourth quarter. However, the Bison scored a touchdown in the final minute to escape with a 27-24 win. The Jackrabbits would end the season ranked 12th in the Sports Network media poll and 13th by the FCS coaches.

SDSU opened the league slate with four consecutive wins, including a last-second, 19-17 road win at top-ranked North Dakota State. After falling at Illinois State in late October, the Jackrabbits won their final three conference games to earn the MVFC’s automatic bid to the FCS playoffs, which included a first-round bye.

Eighth-seeded SDSU opened the postseason with a 10-7 victory over Villanova to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in program history. The Jackrabbits’ season came to a close in the quarterfinals with a loss in a rematch at North Dakota State. SDSU ended the 2016 campaign ranked sixth in the STATS media poll and seventh in the FCS Coaches’ Poll.

The Jackrabbits made their first FCS playoff appearance and the program’s first postseason appearance in 30 years during the 2009 season.

In 2008, the Jackrabbits entered another new era in their Division I pursuits as they joined the Missouri Valley Football Conference. With the transition from Division II completed, SDSU fell just short of a playoff berth in its first season of eligibility, ending the year with a 7-5 overall record and  6-2 mark in the MVFC. Of SDSU’s five losses, four came against ranked FCS opponents, including conference co-champions Northern Iowa and Southern Illinois. The team’s other loss was at the hands of Football Bowl Subdivision opponent Iowa State in the season opener. That game marked the first time the Jackrabbits had played an FBS opponent since moving to Division I at the start of the 2004 season.

The Jackrabbits continued to move up the rankings at the FCS level during the 2008 season, reaching the 12th spot in the Sports Network poll after opening league play with home victories over No. 14 Youngstown State and No. 15 Western Illinois in back-to-back weeks. In all, SDSU was ranked seven weeks that season.

Under Stiegelmeier’s guidance, SDSU has appeared in the FCS rankings 13 of the last 14 seasons and have a streak of more than 100 consecutive weeks in the STATS FCS media poll through the end of the 2019 season. The Jacks cracked a national poll for the first time in October 2006, after posting back-to-back come-from-behind victories over Cal Poly and UC Davis. The Jackrabbits finished the 2006 season ranked 22nd by the Sports Network.

During the 2007 season, SDSU claimed its first conference title since 1963 by winning the Great West Football Conference championship. After an 0-3 start, SDSU reeled off seven wins in its final eight games, including a 29-24 victory over previously undefeated North Dakota State the final week of the season, to claim the GWFC title with a 7-4 overall record and 4-0 mark in league play.

Following an 0-3 start, the Jacks rebounded by winning seven games in a row for the first time since 1963. Three of the victories came in the closing minutes against nationally ranked teams.

In addition to achieving success on the field, Stiegelmeier’s teams have excelled in the classroom. SDSU has earned the Missouri Valley Football Conference Team Academic Award nine times since joining the league in 2008. The Jackrabbits have consistently led their conference in the number of individual all-academic awards, with football student-athletes accounting for CoSIDA Academic All-America honors 27 times during Stiegelmeier’s tenure, including first-team honorees Dalton Cox and Wes Genant in 2018.

Stiegelmeier, 63, is the 20th head coach for the Jackrabbits. His tenure of 23 years as head coach is  the longest head coaching stint for football in school history.

That track record of success helped Stiegelmeier secure his first collegiate head coaching position in December 1996, when he was named Daly’s successor.

The Stiegelmeier era opened in style Sept. 13, 1997, as the Jackrabbits recorded a 17-7 victory at UC Davis. Although SDSU finished Stiegelmeier’s first season with a 4-6 record, the foundation was laid for future success. The Jackrabbits posted a 6-5 record during the 1998 season and broke through with an 8-3 overall mark and a 6-3, fourth-place showing in the North Central Conference.

Led by Harlon Hill Award candidate Josh Ranek, SDSU posted its most victories in 20 years in 1999 and was ranked 15th in the final NCAA Division II regular season poll, despite being picked sixth in the NCC race by both the coaches and media. He was named North Central Conference Coach of the Year in 1999.

SDSU went on to post upper-division finishes in the NCC three of its last four years before moving into the ranks of Division I-AA (now Football Championship Subdivision) in 2004.

Aside from coaching, Stiegelmeier is active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, serving on the state board of directors and as the organization’s SDSU faculty representative. He was presented with the organization’s Grant Teaff Award in 2016.

Stiegelmeier was further honored for his community service in 2019 as a Barefoot Coach of the Year honoree by Samaritan’s Feet International.

FORT COLLINS — More than 32,000 rain-soaked Colorado State fans arrived before kickoff Friday night to provide an electric college football atmosphere inside Canvas Stadium.

The party became a total bust.

In the second half of CSU’s season opener, trailing by double-digits to FCS South Dakota State, the majority of seats were empty. That wall of pregame noise? Replaced by awkward silence. It didn’t break until a growing chant rose up from the visitors’ section: “Let’s go Rabbits!”

So much for raised expectations in coach Steve Addazio’s first full season. His postgame remarks after the 42-23 loss featured a common refrain: Unacceptable.

Let us count the ways.

— CSU entered the game with a defensive front seven Addazio touted in fall camp as best in the Mountain West. That same unit gave up 7.1 yards per carry to an FCS team.

— Predictably, the Rams’ secondary was equally ineffective as SDSU recorded five completions of 20-plus yards.

— SDSU moved the chains on two long third-down conversions (15 and 17 yards). Both drives ended with points.

— Quarterback Todd Centeio was solid — 29 of 42, 304 yds, 1 TD — but he overthrew a sure-touchdown to wide receiver Dante Wright early and fumbled a midfield handoff exchange late.

“You should be sick to your stomach if you’re a competitor,” Addazio said.

The pain was visible on the faces of tight end Trey McBride and defensive lineman Scott Patchan.

CSU’s senior team captains were legitimate NFL draft prospects last spring who instead returned to Fort Collins. Both players have discussed league title aspirations. Are they still within grasp?

McBride, staring intently from the postgame interview room, did not hesitate to answer.

“I still believe that. I fully do,” McBride said. “I’m confident in this team and I’m confident in the players we have. One game isn’t going to change the whole season. I’m fired up about this team. There are a lot of positive things that happened in this game. We’ve just got to play together more.”

Patchan added: “It starts with us. We’ve got to go ahead and lead this team.”

Blame the pandemic for a share of CSU’s misery a year ago, when the Rams finished 1-3 with several game cancellations. It’s more difficult to pinpoint legit excuses for what happened Friday night. Did the Rams play a truly exceptional FCS team that might contend in the Mountain West? Or is CSU falling deeper into college football irrelevancy?

The Big 12 reportedly snubbed CSU in its latest round of conference expansion. However, hours before kickoff against SDSU, athletic director Joe Parker expressed confidence in a Power Five future.

“Step number one is figuring out a way to dominate this league,” Parker said. “Then take opportunities that might present themselves as we move down the road.”

Friday’s debacle proves the Rams are not currently legitimate expansion partners for any major conference. CSU has 11 more games this season to help redefine its place in college football. The Rams are climbing uphill.

“One game doesn’t make a season,” Addazio said. “I still feel like we have an opportunity to have a heck of a football team.”
