Fiesta Bowl set: No. 5 Notre Dame vs. No. 9 Oklahoma State

After a tumultuous period for Notre Dame football involving an abrupt coaching change, the No. 5 Fighting Irish will head to the 51st PlayStation Fiesta Bowl.

The Fighting Irish (11-1) will try to end their 26-year drought in New Year’s Six Bowl games against No. 9 Oklahoma State (11-2), the Big 12 regular season champion, on January 1 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. local time.

The matchup marks the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

Oklahoma State lost 21-16 in Saturday’s Big 12 championship game against Baylor when running back Dezmon Jackson came up inches short on a fourth-down dive with 24 seconds left in the game.

Notre Dame announced defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman as the next head coach in program history Friday. Freeman fills the vacancy left by former head coach Brian Kelly when he took a job at LSU on the eve of the final weekend of the regular season.

The College Football Playoff field was set Sunday morning. Alabama (12-1) and Michigan (12-1) were the first two teams in. Georgia (12-1) was third and will play Michigan, and Cincinnati (13-0) was the last team to get into final four over No. 5 Notre Dame and No. 7 Ohio State. Cincinnati (13-0), the last remaining undefeated team in the FBS, is the first team outside of the Power Five conferences to secure a spot in the College Football Playoff since its inception in 2014.

Alabama and Cincinnati meet on New Year's Eve at the Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas. Michigan-Georgia is the Orange Bowl in Miami Gardens, Florida. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN. The times will be announced at a later date.

The other two New Year's Six bowl games, along with the Fiesta Bowl, are No. 10 Michigan State and No. 12 Pittsburgh in the Peach Bowl on Dec. 30, No. 6 Ohio State and No. 11 Utah in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1 and No. 7 Baylor and No. 8 Ole Miss on Jan. 1 in the Sugar Bowl.

Following a cancellation last season, the Guaranteed Rate Bowl will be played on December 28 at Chase Field at 8:15 p.m. with Minnesota (8-4) and West Virginia (6-6). The game will be televised on ESPN.

West Virginia returns to the Guaranteed Rate Bowl for the third time with the last visit a 43-42 win over Arizona State in 2016.

The Gophers, who have won four straight bowl games, will be playing in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl for the fourth time. Minnesota previously competed in the bowl game in 2009, 2008 and 2006 when it was known as the Insight Bowl.

Oklahoma State is making its third appearance at the Fiesta Bowl with wins over BYU in 1974 and Stanford in 2012 on its resume. Notre Dame is returning for sixth time, but the 1-4 record was capped off with a loss to Ohio State in 2016.

Boise State will face Central Michigan in the Arizona Bowl on Dec. 31. Kickoff from Arizona Stadium in Tucson is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

Auburn football will play Houston in Birmingham Bowl

AUBURN — Bryan Harsin's first season as Auburn football coach will end with a trip to the Birmingham Bowl at 11 a.m. CT Dec. 28 at Protective Stadium in Birmingham.

Auburn (6-6) will face No. 21 Houston (11-2) on ESPN. The two programs have not met since 1973, but Auburn leads the all-time series 5-1. Auburn's last bowl game win against a ranked opponent was the 2010 national championship win against Oregon.

This will be the 46th bowl game in Auburn program history and the second Birmingham Bowl appearance in the game's 15-year history. The Tigers are 24-19-2 in bowl games, including a 31-10 win against Memphis in the 2015 Birmingham Bowl.

At the time, the game was played at historic Legion Field, where Auburn also played the annual Iron Bowl rivalry game against Alabama for decades. But this will be the first edition of the game played at Protective Stadium, the new UAB home venue that opened Oct. 2 with UAB's 36-12 loss to Liberty.

Last week, Protective Stadium hosted the AHSAA Super 7 state high school championship games.

SEASON IN RECAP: 13 moments that defined Auburn football's season and led to Tigers' final record

TRANSFER PORTAL TRACKER: Keep up with every Auburn football player who enters transfer portal after 2021 season

"Auburn football has a long history of playing in Birmingham, and now we have a chance to continue that against a nationally-ranked Houston team that has won 11 games this year," Harsin said in a release from the school. "Our mindset is to end the season with a win as we build momentum for 2022, while allowing our guys to enjoy a great bowl experience. This game is an opportunity for a number of our players to play close to home and many of our fans to easily attend after Christmas."

The Birmingham Bowl is part of the lowest tier of SEC bowl affiliations, meaning that Auburn was not selected by the pool of six mid-tier games considered to have equal pedigree. A record 13 SEC teams are bowl-eligible this season, including five 6-6 teams.

Last season's Birmingham Bowl was canceled due to a lack of available teams as the COVID-19 pandemic ravaged the college football postseason. The Legion Field era of the game came to an end with Cincinnati's 38-6 win against Boston College to end the 2019 season. Cincinnati will play Alabama in the College Football Playoff this season.

Auburn is the first SEC team to play in the Birmingham Bowl since 2016, when South Carolina lost to South Florida in overtime. The SEC is 4-3 in the game's short history, and Auburn joins South Carolina as the only league schools to appear in the game twice. Kentucky, Ole Miss, Florida and Vanderbilt have all played in it.

Houston is a compelling opponent that was undefeated in the AAC until losing the conference championship game 35-20 to No. 4 Cincinnati on Saturday. The Cougars are coached by Dana Holgorsen, who was head coach at West Virginia from 2011-18. Their only other loss this season was to Texas Tech in the season opener. They rank 14th in the country in scoring offense with 37.3 points per game.

The Tigers are trying to snap a four-game losing streak, which included three straight blown double-digit leads to end the regular season. They are in the process of hiring their own new offensive coordinator after Mike Bobo's one-year tenure ended last week.

WVU Headed To Guaranteed Rate Bowl

Mountaineers will face Minnesota Golden Gophers

West Virginia head coach Neal Brown watches his team during warm ups prior to a an NCAA college football game against Kansas Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021, in Lawrence, Kan. (AP Photo/Ed Zurga)

MORGANTOWN — The Mountaineers have already packed their bags, but now they know where they’re actually going.

West Virginia accepted an invitation to participate in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, the program announced Sunday afternoon. The game will be played on Dec. 28 at Chase Field in Phoenix, with the start scheduled for 10:15 p.m. It will be broadcast on ESPN.

“What better place to be in the month of December than Phoenix, Arizona?” head coach Neal Brown said.

It’s WVU’s the second bowl appearance of the Neal Brown era and the 39th appearance in program history. The game marks the first time the Mountaineers (6-6, 4-5 Big 12) will play in the bowl under its current name, with the team most recently playing in the then-named Cactus Bowl in the 2015 season.

“We’re gonna take the group that’s prepared to play, that is motivated to play, and we’re gonna give our guys the very best opportunity to win,” Brown said.

West Virginia will face Minnesota, who finished third in the Big 10 West with an overall record of 8-4 and 6-3 in the conference. It will be the first time the two teams meet in history, despite both programs being around for more than 100 years.

The Golden Gophers will enter the bowl having won six of their last eight games. They possess the No. 4 defense in the Big 10, but do feature a middle of the pack offense as No. 8 of 14 teams.

Also to note, Pete Themel of Yahoo! Sports reported Thursday that Minnesota is set to hire WVU offensive analyst Kirk Ciarrocca as the team’s offensive coordinator. While neither program has officially confirmed the move, Brown said that the Mountaineers would work through the situation soon.

Sunday’s announcement is arguably a peak of West Virginia’s season as, for a large portion of the year, the idea of receiving a bowl bid was in doubt. After opening the season 2-1, a quick three-game skid left the Mountaineers in an uncomfortable — but fixable — situation.

“There’s zero margin for error,” senior linebacker Josh Chandler-Semedo said Oct. 19, days after West Virginia’s 45-20 loss to Baylor. “I can only speak for myself, but I’m not going out like that. … I’m not going out like that, not (in) my senior year.”

The Mountaineers responded by winning their first two games coming out of the bye week, but quickly returned to their losing ways. Consecutive losses to Oklahoma State and Kansas State brought the team to six losses, requiring WVU to win out in order to become bowl eligible.

West Virginia was able to do exactly that, limping to bowl eligibility after beating Texas on Nov. 20 and Kansas in the final week of the regular season.

Elsewhere in the Big 12, conference champion Baylor and runner-up Oklahoma State will both play in New Year’s Six bowls. Oklahoma (Alamo Bowl), Iowa State (Cheez-It Bowl), Kansas State (Texas Bowl) and Texas Tech (Liberty Bowl) will also play one more game. Texas, TCU and Kansas did not obtain the required six wins to be eligible.

Tickets for the Guaranteed Rate Bowl are available to the general public now through the WVU ticket office.

Tennessee's bowl game destination, opponent revealed

Tennessee appears to be staying in-state to cap off the 2020 season.

College football insider Brett McMurphy of Stadium reports, per sources, that the Volunteers will play West Virginia in the Liberty Bowl. The matchup in Memphis is set for 4 p.m ET Dec. 31, airing on ESPN.

It will be a rematch of the first game of the Jeremy Pruitt era. UT and WVU met for the first time in Charlotte to open the 2018 season. The Mountaineers won that game 40-14.

This will be Tennessee’s first set of back-to-back bowl bids since Butch Jones took the Volunteers to the Outback Bowl and Music City Bowl in 2015-16. UT has a four-game winning streak in bowls, dating back to the 45-28 TaxSlayer Bowl win over Iowa by Jones’ squad in 2014. Tennessee’s latest bowl victory was a thrilling come-from-behind win over Indiana in the Gator Bowl, helping Pruitt earn a raise and extension ahead of his third year as UT’s head coach.

Tennessee started the 2020 campaign 2-0 but dropped seven of its final eight, finishing with a 3-7 record. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA waived all bowl eligibility requirements for the 2020 season. West Virginia is 5-4. Neal Brown’s squad is looking to bounce back from a 42-6 loss to Iowa State on Dec. 5.

UPDATE: The SEC has confirmed this news.

The Gophers are headed to the Valley of the Sun.

Minnesota accepted an invitation Sunday to play in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl on Tuesday, Dec. 28 at Chase Field in Phoenix. The Gophers (8-4, 6-3 Big Ten) will play West Virginia (6-6, 4-5 Big 12) in a game set to kickoff at 9:15 p.m. CT and air on ESPN.

“We are very honored to be in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl out there in Phoenix,” Gophers coach P.J. Fleck said in a news conference Sunday night. “… I know our alumni, our team, our families, our staff, our fans will have an absolute blast in the Phoenix area and the state of Arizona. We are very excited. Tremendous opponent.”

This is the first matchup between the two programs, but they had a common opponent in 2021. West Virginia lost 30-23 to Maryland in season opener on Sept. 4, while Minnesota beat the Terrapins 34-16 on Oct. 23.

“We got a chance to watch them here and there because of the crossover with Maryland,” Fleck said. “… They play a very unique defense and present a lot of challenges and play incredibly hard. We’ve got our work cut out for us. We have to come up with the best game plan, organize our staff properly and what we can be able to do.”

Mountaineers coach Neal Brown was complimentary of Minnesota, in particular its top-25 defense and veteran offensive line that paved the way for five 100-yard rushers this season.

The Gophers were passed over within the Big Ten for better-known bowls and Southeastern Conference opponents; Penn State (7-5, 4-5) goes to the Outback Bowl to play Arkansas; Purdue (8-4, 6-3) heads to the Music City Bowl and will face Tennessee.

With the weather in Phoenix forecast to be warm and sunny later this month, Fleck joked about leaving early. “Seventy degrees plus, count us in anytime,” he said while on a recruiting visit. “Coming from Minnesota during the winters, we are very excited. Might even show up this week and start the training now.”

The Guaranteed Rate Bowl was formerly known as the Insight Bowl, and Minnesota lost in three appearances in that game in 2006, ’08, and ’09.

Minnesota is 2-0 in bowl games under Fleck. After not being eligible at 5-7 in 2017, Minnesota beat Georgia Tech in the Quick Lane Bowl in 2018, and then topped Auburn in the Outback Bowl after the 2019 season. The Gophers could have gone to a bowl with a 3-4 record in the pandemic-altered 2020 season but opted out last December.

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota football team will face West Virginia in Guaranteed Rate Bowl on Dec. 28 in Phoenix, Ariz.

Fans intending to watch the game on TV will need to plan for a late night. The Gophers and Mountaineers will kick off at 9:15 p.m. local time on ESPN. Minnesota finished the regular season 8-4 after a 23-13 win over rival Wisconsin. West Virginia finished its season 6-6, including wins over Texas and Kansas to end the regular season.

"We couldn’t be happier, couldn’t be prouder of our team for earning the right to come out to Phoenix and the Arizona area. We’re very excited. This is a great match-up, we’re very honored to be there, we’re excited to be there. 70-degrees plus, count us in any time. Coming from Minnesota during the winter, we’re very excited. Might even show up this week and start the training now," Fleck told reporters via Zoom Sunday night.

It’ll be the Gophers’ third appearance in a bowl game in five seasons under PJ Fleck. The Gophers are 2-0 in bowl games with Fleck, most recently beating Auburn in the Outback Bowl to finish the 2019 season 11-2.

FLECK MAKING CHANGE AT OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR

PJ Fleck confirmed during a conference call Sunday night for the Guaranteed Rate Bowl that he’s making a change at offensive coordinator. He has parted ways with Mike Sanford Jr. after two seasons.

The Gophers had one of the better rushing offenses in the Big Ten, but had an inconsistent passing game. Only service academies Army, Navy and Air Force, which are all known for the triple option, threw fewer passes than the Gophers. According to reports that surfaced late last week, Fleck is bringing back former offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca, who was instrumental in Minnesota’s offensive success during the Gophers’ 11-2 season in 2019.

In a twist of irony, Ciarrocca was an offensive analyst at West Virginia this season.

"I just felt like we needed a change on offense. Mike is a tremendous person and a wonderful football coach. I just felt like it needed a new direction in the leadership of that position, and we’re working our way towards making a hire here very shortly," Fleck said.

Fleck said they’ve made a decision on who will be calling offensive plays for the bowl game, which will be kept internal.
