What is a cashier’s check? Definition, uses, how to buy one, cost and alternatives

What is a cashier’s check?

A cashier’s check, also known as an official bank check, is a payment instrument issued by a bank or credit union to a third party, usually on behalf of a bank customer who pays the bank the face value of the check. In a major transaction, such as buying a boat or a home, a cashier’s check assures the payee that the funds are there because the check is backed by the bank’s funds, not the payer’s bank account, so there is no risk of the check bouncing.

The buyer of the cashier’s check pays the bank upfront for the full amount of the check. The bank deposits those funds and then issues the cashier’s check  to the designated payee for the amount requested.

The check cannot be cashed by anyone but the designated payee and settlement is usually quicker than with a personal check.

When to use a cashier’s check

Use a cashier’s check when you need to make a large payment and a personal check or credit card isn’t acceptable, and paying with cash isn’t safe or practical.

A cashier’s check is a safe, efficient payment method when a large sum of money, generally anything over $1,000, is required.

Some transactions will require a cashier’s check for payment. You might need a cashier’s check to make a security deposit on an apartment, for example, or to cover the down payment on a new car. Consumers often use cashier’s checks to pay a merchant or vendor that requires cash but will not accept personal checks. Cashier’s checks also are used in cash trades that must settle quickly, such as with real estate and brokerage transactions.

A merchant or payee who wants to avoid the risk of a counterfeit check or a check bouncing may require a cashier’s check for its security and guarantees.

How to get a cashier’s check

You will probably have to visit a bank branch or credit union to get a cashier’s check. Some banks will not issue cashier’s checks to non-customers.

To get a cashier’s check, be sure you have your personal identification with you, like a driver’s license. Have enough cash on hand or funds in your account to pay the bank the full amount of the check. You also must supply the name of the payee, since banks cannot issue blank cashier’s checks. Be sure to keep the receipt for the bank check.

Some online-only banks do provide cashier’s checks. Some traditional banks give you options of how to get a cashier’s check. Wells Fargo, for instance, allows its customers to order cashier’s checks in a branch or online. If you order a cashier’s check online, expect to pay a delivery fee.

Fees for a cashier’s check

Cashier’s checks typically cost about $10-$15. Some banks waive the fee for certain account holders, so ask your bank. For example, Bank of America charges $15 for a cashier’s check, but waives the fee for account holders who meet certain balance requirements.

If you need to use cashier’s checks on a regular basis, you may want to find a bank that offers them for free with your account. Online banks such as Ally Bank and Discover, for example, offer free official bank checks.

If you order cashier’s checks online, either through an online-only bank or a traditional bank, the bank likely will charge you a delivery fee. Wells Fargo, for example, charges a $10 fee to issue a cashier’s check to its savings and checking account customers, plus an $8 delivery charge for online orders.

Are cashier’s checks safe?

Cashier’s checks are very safe. They are issued by a bank and are paid out of bank funds, not customer accounts. The bank fills in the “payable to” information and no one but the designated payee can cash the check.

Security is a big advantage of using a cashier’s check to make a payment. They can only be cashed by the intended recipient

Cashier’s checks also settle much faster than personal checks. Often, the funds are available the next day. Personal checks can take several days or longer to clear.

Security features such as watermarks are built into cashier’s checks to prevent or lower the risk of fraud.

If you lose a cashier’s check before you send it, don’t panic: You can get a replacement, but you will need to get an indemnity bond from an insurance broker for the amount of the lost check. The bond assures the bank that it will not be on the hook for two checks. Once you put the process into motion, it can take 30 to 90 days to get your replacement check.

Alternatives to cashier’s checks

If you are involved in a transaction of less than $1,000, a money order can be a good option. They’re easier to get than cashier’s checks because they are sold at many grocery and convenience stores, the post office, Western Union and Walmart stores.

You don’t need a bank account to get a money order, and they’re much cheaper than cashier’s checks. And though they are not as secure as a bank check, they don’t bounce because the buyer must pay the vendor upfront for the full amount that is to be paid using the money order.

A certified check is another alternative. A certified check is a personal check that has been certified by the bank. The bank certifies that the funds for the amount the check is written for are, indeed, available and are earmarked for the designated payee. The bank also verifies that the payer’s signature is genuine.

Worthless Company ever. Paid my car loan off in January 2021. Paid a total of 71k. Asked for a lean release from them and never recieced it. Called again still never received it. Called 2 months later spoke with supposed supervisor who was talking to finance and was going to FedEx the document, still waiting on that callback and tracking number. Glad I am not holding my breathe. Still can't get my truck registered in my name. Called the dealership and they were nice enough to send me another temperate so I don't get pulled over. Now it is almost expired again and still have yet to get my lein release letter.

Apparently Ally made a clerical error that merged my account with someone else back in October. That was about the time I stopped getting bills from Ally. When I called to inquire why I no longer received a bill, I was given no explanation. Fast forward to 3/22, I received a voice mail from someone who indicated they were now part owner of my car due to Ally's incompetence. I called the person back who explained his situation and promptly called Ally who told me that they saw a fraud case that was opened up in January and NOTHING had been done. Ally has done nothing to fix this, this is unacceptable. I called again today 3/23, still nothing has been done. They can't direct me to the fraud department or help in any way, just continue to tell me they are sorry, blah, blah, blah. You are right, they are sorry. The person who was given co ownership of my car tried calling for months along with his attorney, still Ally did nothing. FIX THIS NOW!!!

I've been trying to get a simple answer about minimum requirement for insurance on my vehicle. After many attempts, and speaking with customer service agents, I have been unable to obtain a correct answer. I asked to speak to s supervisor or manager and was told someone would have to call me back within 48 hours. That was unacceptable to em and I asked to hold. I've now been on hold waiting for a supervisor for 43 minutes. The customer service agent told me that I might be on hold for the entire day. She was rude and I'm sure she is purposely keeping me on hold with no intention of ever putting my call through.

I paid my car loan off with Ally Bank 2 years ago in August 2012. I am now in the process of trying to obtain a home improvement loan and I'm being told that I don't qualify due to my car loan with Ally Bank which still showing on my credit report 2 years later August 2014 as unpaid (which this loan was paid in full 2 years ago with Ally) and I currently do not have a car loan/payment. I called the number today and was told it would take 4 hours to receive a fax comfirmation showing that this loan was satified. I had to call back due to not receiving the fax, once received it showed the loan satification date as being today not 2 years ago. I then requested the loan history which will show the actual date of the payoff of August 2012, I was informed again it would take another 4 hours to receive this document by fax (4 hours to fax a document that I needed yesterday, what a joke)and I wouldn't have needed the document if Ally would have taken care of clearing this off my credit history 2 years ago. I'm still on hold with yet another representive as I am typing this. I have spoken to a total of 4 representatives so far and 2 manager today and spent over 1 1/2 hours on the phone, I certainly hope this situation get resolved with the credit bureaus soon, but I'm being to wonder because I feel like I'm dealing with a lot of incompetent indivduals at this bank. I plan on calling the coorporate office to complain as well when I get a chance, it may not be today but I plan on calling, hopefully someone there and can make sure this situation gets resolved with the credit bureaus. I'm still waiting another 4 hours to obtain the fax for my required documents so I can get my home improvement loan, what a joke.

My name is joyce calloway, and I have been trying to pay my car pmt. It is primarily a new acct. My first pmt. was late, that I pd on Feb. 1, 2014. I sent to wrong address that was on an Ally paperwork. It was re routed to Arizona 15 days late. And now it is in collection. Since the first pmt. was posted, I have tried to make 3/01/14 pmt. Four persons said they will clear out old login etc. out, so I can start with a new login/password and get into pmt. infro. and get the ball rolling so i can stay current as I did in the old acct.

I work at a bank and I am shocked with Ally bank. I am trying to get my car payment drafted from my account and was told to fax the form and it would be taken care of. I called to check and they said they don't have it on record. I faxed this form 13 times and they still can not see it coming through and would not help me. Who would have thought you would have to beg a bank to take your money right from your account to make sure they are paid. I will close my account and pay the extra intrest to another bank just to have the trust that you should get from a bank. I would advise everyone, don't trust your money with theses people........

I LOVE THIS BANK!! I have been w/ Ally for almost a year and would happily recommend them to anyone. I had a dispute w/ the worst store to dispute - Wal-Mart; yet Ally gave Me a credit w/in 24hrs and resolved the dispute in 48hrs. They've always been helpful and I always will keep them as My bank. I only wish I could open a business account w/ them!

I just had to close my account due to having no access to my account. I had an available funds of over $100.00 in my account and checks that I wrote were sent back. One was for my light bill and now I have returned fees on these checks as well as my lights getting cut off and now I have to pay a reconnect fee. I am very upset with this bank's service and I am irate about the unexpected fees I now have to pay due to this matter. How do you advise I respond to this issue? I am interested in the response I will receive. Thanks for your time. Sincerely,

How do I get in touch with the corporate office? I am so fed up with Ally right now I could scream. No one speaks English, they will not give you a number for corporate, they hang up on you.

Posted by clmoyer

Yes no one speaks English understands what you are saying or can help. They misunderstand everything you say. I am writing to corporate and if I do not get the help I need they can come get the car.

Posted by frustrated

I don't know how this company stays in business when you can't get a human being on the phone, much less one that speaks English, to take your payment. I was on the phone with them over 2 hours this morning trying to make a truck payment and when I finally did get someone to talk to I couldn't understand them and they couldn't understand me. I finally got so frustrated I asked whoever I speaking to for the corporate number and she had the nerve to ask me why I needed it. When I told her it was none of her business she hung up on me. I had already called them at least 10 times and had to go through 20 prompts to get to a human being only to be hung up on. I can assure you that when I have any kind of business dealings in the future if Ally Financial is going to be any part of it the deal is off.

I have tried and tried to get a routing number so I can pay my auto loan through army allotment and since MAC is going out of buissness I continue to get the run around which is really sad considering me being a soilder who gave up a lot for his contry, but I guess your company has no care for us in uniform!!

What's unsettling about Ally's management is their indifference to customer problems. Their ho-hum attitude is manifest in their responses, which are brief, desultory and almost always off the mark. How can they be so complacent yet perform so poorly?

The worst company to do business with!!!! Its like there is no one with common sense! I requested to send title by fed. express overnight. Every time, when I was calling, they couldn't figure out how the package was sent out, one said by federal express, another one by regular mail. The customer relations rep had no clue what I was talking about! They couldn't send out the title in proper way. They made the mess. Never seen a lending instiitution operate like this. Absolutely ridiculous!

HORRIBLE COMPANY TO DEAL WITH!!!!!! Total incompetence from customer service all the way up the food chain; supervisors cover bungling customer service personnel. They cause issue and then turn problem on customer to correct at customer expense and absolute aggravation. I have to pre-medicate myself before calling them. Dealership told me to go to Ally to change due date after new purchase; two months later, they continue to send incorrect information and now everything is wrong and I'm responsible for paying more money than before and facing delinquency. You can't even call anyone else because all calls redirect back to these same idiots. Ally should be forced out of business to stop preying on the public with their destructive ineptness.

I am reporting this company to the BBB. take $400 a month for them to not even apply it to the vehicle how is anyone going to be able to get anywhere this way? fed up.

Will NEVER do business we these people again! We are simply trying to pay off our loan to get the title cleared so we can sell our vehicle. We are shipping overseas on military orders and needed to do this within a certain timeframe. We called and they told us a time frame that wouldn't work for getting this done. After speaking with the DMV to get some answers about processing, we called back and the next person gave us three options to make it go through immediately. I clarified one in particular and she did confirm it. After making the payment and calling to verify it, I am now being told that instead of 24-48 hours, it will be 10 days just to clear the payment and 2-3 business days to process the paperwork...then we get to wait for the lien release/cleared title. One woman said they electronically send the lien release to the DMV, which is what the site says they do, the other two I spoke with said they mail it out to us in 3-5 business days. All together, we either get it in a few days or a month....huge difference. We have 2 weeks to ship out. How does that work exactly? Now they are saying they can't stop the payment and I have to put a stop payment through my own bank (yep, costing ME money). I called my bank, they haven't received anything so can't stop it. Not only this, but Ally told me they will put it through at least twice if it doesn't clear the first time! AND we now apparently get to go to western union and pay to send that as well. Frustration doesn't begin to describe what I feel. I feel ripped off, cheated, and like they don't give a crap. All I get are robot answers over and over again. The only light in this rainbow so far has been talking to Melissa Brown in Witchita. She had all the answers, knew what she was talking about, and handled things easily and fast. Unfortunately, it seems we are still waiting to hear if what she is trying will work now.

I find out while trying to buy a house that Nuvell has reported that I've been 30 days delinquent on my last 26 payments to the credit bureau! That's over 2 years and completely inaccurate! Now I've dealt with over a month of foreign accents and incompetent employees who continue to tell me it's "being investigated" and I'll hear from someone on their "decision"! Wait? WHAT? Your "decision" about what?! I have NOT been 30 days late on my payments for the last 2 years and all you have to do is look to see that! Now DO YOUR JOB and fix your mistake so I can buy my house and never use your services again!!

Overly frustrated with Ally, I called to request a payment extension for May 2013 which they can do. I set everything up with one of the customer service reps. The idiot never sent me the paperwork that I needed and didn't know i needed. So after finally getting something sent, I get 3 different arrangments in the mail. I fax them all over at the same time. Next thing I know collections is calling me. I tell them that the person I spoke to yesterday, verified all my extensions were received and processed, even gave me the information from the extension back to me and she completley ignored me!! I'm highly pissed at these people and wish I could get rid of them all!

I have lost track of all the people I've talked with since I've paid my car off in the first part of April 2013. Quite a few of them I couldn't really understand because of their accents. NOT TO MENTION they didn't get what I was saying to them and instead of a short conversation most of the time they were almost 45 minutes to an hour. Very frustrating!! The last guy I spoke with it took me 20 minutes for him to understand I was talking (after mentioning it 4-5 times during the conversation)about SC DMV and not FL. He sent me something in the mail (altho' he said it was a copy of the electronic title he would send) that was signed by a Latressa Dailey (no title under her name) and also notarized. I thought that was very strange and unprofessional. Again I am frustrated by this man that obviously couldn't understand me! But I couldn't understand why he had some "chick" send me a letter that was "notarized" and with NO TITLE for her position with the company. How do I know that she didn't sit in a cubicle next to him????? I have used Ally since my first loan in the early 80's but now will look for another company. I AM VERY VERY UNHAPPY AND REFUSE TO GO THROUGH THIS TYPE OF NIGHTMARE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Very upset customer of ally and

I called and asked to see if there was any way they could work with me to help me get help to either skip a month and put it at the end of my loan and/or if their was any payment plans they could offer me because I am only living off of Ss because my husband passed away and I needed surgery but have no insurance. They said they could put feb payment at the end of my loan and also I could break up march pymt in two months( half in march and the other half in april) then pay normal payments starting may. Well that also leaves a month behind which he said I could extend that to end of loan as well because its a medical reason. I did this ahead of time so I could also get caught up on some other bills from my ex couldn't handle my pain and chronic pain I'm suffering with and he left me without paying any of his share of bills. I wanted to get all my finances in order, caught up and was so thankful ally found a solution for me. However, that was not the case. The same day I received a bill in the mail saying I was late on my march bill and now telling me I owe march bill. I have talked to atleast 15 diff customer care specialists whom most don't speak English well enuf to communicate to them that I need their service. I finally got someone who helped me said he fixed it and I'm all ok. Well bill collections called that night and every day and all were rude and couldn't communicate. Instead if helping they just kept saying" this is what the computer telling me, u are past due for march payment". Over and over. I kept begging for them to help me cuz I don't know what to do... This happened again and I asked why it went to collections. After rude ppl hanging up on me I kept calling back til I found someone who cared and said its out of collections now and he sees what was set up and he would fix it for me. So I went to make my pymt last night and was told that I was to have made 2 pymts in march . I said that's not even making sense. I only get Ss once a month so splitting it up in one month would have been pointless since I only get paid once a month PLUS IT WAS NOT THE PYMT ARRANGEMENT WE SET UP AND IT WAS THE CUSTOMER SERVICE REP.'s solution idea for me. Now I'm told that it there must have been miscommunication cuz those kind of extensions are not allowed. Well the man who I originally spoke with never even used the word extension so I was lost!! Then if your employees cannot understand how to do their job bc they are over sea employees then it is not my responsibility to fix their error and magically come up with the money to change our arrangement!! And if u are paying over sea ppl to do this work u are making millions by not having to pay them much that u can easily just stick to the arrangement I was told and work with me, and ethically u should since it was an error on your end. I am not trained to know how u do pymt arrangements so that is why I called to get help so I could get all caught up and my finances in order. Now I'm told my only options are to stay 30 days behind until July when I will qualify for another extension and then can extend that payment or magically pay the month they say I'm behind bc their employee gave me an arrangement that is not an option in the way they do business. It was your mistake so u should work with me bc this is going to affect my credit which I was trying to get all my finances in order before I had surgery. I just had surgery and spent an hour dealing with rude representatives last night and then another rude lady who called me today and would not help me at all ! I used to be a manager and this is so unethical to treat your customers and to run a business!! Please help me or I will find legal assistance and go to court!

I just verified I made a paument and they informed me that they never received it, I verified with western union and they verified they did receive it and I had to do a refund and fight Ally to get my money back to make the payment again??? I do not understand this company and the worst part I don't think anyone there does either.

Alley and Nuvell financing has been running me around for the past three months over a 1000.00 payment I sent through western union to keep my vehicle from being repossessed. They released the vehicle to me after the payment and then three weeks later they contact me and state that the sent the money back to western union and I still owed the 1000.00 dollars. This is a sever problem that no one at alley will even address or acknowledge. I have tried to reach home office but they do not have numbers at any dept, collection, customer service, etc. to distribute to customers. (It takes me back to my professor in college, to create confusion is a great opportunity to make a lot of money). I do not know what to do with this type of company, we feel like we are doing business with the local pawn shop. PLEASE BEAWARE OF ALLY AND NUVELL FINACING! I will never do business with them again and with our buying power as consumers we have the capabilities to stop companies like this from taking advantage of future customers.

We called your auto loan office and requested the pay off on my wife's car and were told an amount and then we were told we have to use western union to make the transaction we then call and made the transaction which cost over $17. Then we were told that it didn't get posted in time and to pay another $17 +to payoff. it seems to me when one of your officials tell you a payoff amount then thats what it should be. if there is no response from your office I plan on Contacting the local news station to see they will show how your company does business to make money

I just had a lesson learned with Ally Bank.... My Mom is 90 years old and cannot see very well at all or cannot always understand what someone says to her & cannot hear well. I am her daughter, live with her and do just about everything for her. I called & spend up to 2 hours on the phone (first 35 minutes just to get thru on two different times)with my Mom on the line upstairs trying to question information about her account. I was online with all of her information details as I said I handle her accounts. I was trying to get money out for my sister who is the beneficiary as she requested it and Mom said ok. She answered all of the questions right as I was on the line yet the girl stated one or more of the answers were wrong & she could let us even ask questions. I would have to wait at home for someone to call back in 1-2 business days and (I guess sit at home waiting) just to access information on Mom's account. NO one could even request information again even the supervisor was useless as he only kept repeating the same information the clerk gave. Why oh Why does Ally need supervisors if they give them NO power??? Waste of money. When we do finally get into this account I guarantee ALL of Mom's money will be withdrawn from this bank. I realize they are protecting Mom's account but is MOM who is talking with them. Now we are locked out of the account until someone decides to call and determine it is safe. WOW I just wasted 2 hours on the phone and waiting on line for nothing and Mom cannot even get access to her own money. Give me a break. Give the clerks and supervisors some authority so they are just giving the rote responses they are taught.

I applied for a re-fi on our mortgage in August. I had to call them each time I had not heard in a while. The last time I heard was in August and this is October I called today and my processor said that it fell through the cracks and yes it was ready to be signed and closing should be next week. What kind of bank is this? What kind of people work here?

I've been off work since october12, 2011. I was driving Chicago transit bus when three adolescents thought. It would be hilarious to throw a boulder. Through my drivers side windshield. Which caused me to have two disk replaced in my neck with a titanium plate. I'm receiving workmans compensation, which is late all the time. I was told by national auto finance if I made my full may payment by June 20, 2012. I could receive a 2 month extension which would cover. The month of June and July. I only owed $94.15, I Received a call since the 20th of June telling me. I owe June payment. To my knowledge I was told my payment wasn't due untIl October. I spoke to Audrina today at 3:06p.m, I spoke to a supervisor/ June at 3:28p.m,I spoke to Suzy/ 4:04p.m. Those three individuals was so rude and disrespectful, I spoke with mikaee today at 4:35p.m. Mikaee was the only individual today the spoke very intellengently. She explained to me that I will receive a call from the company tomorrow. They will let me know if I can get approved for an extension for June and July. I'm confused because I was already approved for. The extension in june, do can someone please help me. P.S. Lula Nicholson 215-9128-85866.

8 Tools For Sending Money To Family And Friends Fast

Sending money to family and friends used to be limited to cash or check. But the rise of digital banking apps and services has made it easier than ever to send money to loved ones quickly.

With an abundance of digital payment options available, choosing the best way to send money can get a little tricky. While many money transfer tools are free to use, some charge fees. And some solutions take longer to process transfers than others.

Here are eight ways you can send money to family and friends fast.

1. Zelle

Fees: None

Transaction limits: $500 weekly, may be subject to bank limits

Transfer time: Within minutes

Zelle is a popular peer-to-peer payment tool for sending and receiving money via bank transfers. The company managed roughly $519 million worth of transactions during the first half of 2020 alone. Individuals can enroll to use Zelle through their bank‘s mobile app or by downloading the Zelle app. Either the sender or the person receiving money must have access to Zelle through their bank or credit union.

Zelle payments are processed quickly, with the money accessible within minutes in most cases. If you’re looking to get money to loved ones fast, it doesn’t get much faster than Zelle. Zelle makes the process simple for the receiver, too, sending them a notification that explains what they need to do to receive their payment.

2. Venmo

Fees: 3% fee when using a credit card; other payment methods are free

Transaction limits: $4,999.99 weekly for person-to-person transactions after identity confirmation

Transfer time: Instant

Digital wallets are becoming more common, and Venmo is one of the most recognized wallet apps. Available on iOS and Android, Venmo makes instant payments to family and friends a breeze. Unlike Zelle, Venmo isn’t tied to specific banks. Both parties need a Venmo account, which is easily set up using a mobile phone number or email address.

Users can either add funds to their Venmo account or link an external payment method like a bank account or credit card. Venmo also allows users to sync their phone and Facebook contacts.

Once set up, users pay by inputting the contact name, including a reason for the payment and setting the transfer amount. The money shows up in the recipient’s Venmo account almost instantly. Users also can request money from other individuals.

3. PayPal

Fees: None for U.S. transfers funded by PayPal balance or a linked bank account

Transaction limits: $10,000 to $60,000 limit per single transaction for verified accounts; limits may vary by currency

Transfer time: Typically instant, eChecks may take up to six days

Millions of shoppers worldwide use PayPal, but it’s also a great way to send money to family and friends when needed. PayPal accounts are free to create and easy to use. All you need to do is sign up and then link a bank account or payment card. You only need the receiver’s email address or phone number. Senders can either transfer money into their PayPal account or just send money directly from their linked account or card.

Only some transfers are free, though, so be sure to check before sending money. For example, U.S. transfers funded with a credit card, debit card or PayPal Credit will pay 2.9% of the funded total plus a $0.30 fixed fee. For international transfers, the transaction fee is 5% of the sent total ($0.99 min to $4.99 maximum) for transfers made by cash or a linked bank account; for credit, debit or PayPal Credit, add 2.9% of the funded total and a fixed fee based on the currency.

PayPal is accessible online or via the PayPal mobile app. The app, available on iOS and Android, tracks all of your transactions for easy account management.

4. Cash App

Fees: 3% when sent from a credit card, 1% or 1.5% for instant deposits

Transaction limits: $7,500 total in any seven-day period

Transfer time: Instant for Cash App to Cash App payments

Another simple way to send money to loved ones is through the Cash App. Created by Square, the Cash App allows users to create free accounts and quickly send money to other people.

Sending a payment through the Cash App is straightforward. Open up the app, enter the transfer amount and the receiver’s email address or phone number, add a reason for the payment and tap “Pay.” Sending funds requires a linked bank account or credit card. There are no fees for using its peer-to-peer service.

The Cash App limits how much money you can send to people. Senders are limited to $7,500 in total in any seven-day period. The app may require additional identification if you send more than $250, either in one transaction or multiple transactions, over a seven-day period.

5. Google Pay

Fees: None

Transaction limits: $10,000 per single transaction, $10,000 every seven days, $3,000 every 24 hours for Florida residents

Transfer time: Instant from Google Pay balance or debit card, five to 10 days from a bank account

Google is everywhere, it seems, so it makes sense that it would offer a way for individuals to send money quickly. Android Pay and Google Wallet now make up what is known as Google Pay. Google accounts are free to set up and are accessible through online access and its mobile app. You can use an existing Google account to set up Google Pay if you have one.

Google Pay uses a linked debit card or bank account for sending money. Sending money through Google Pay is only available in the U.S. and India currently.

6. Apple Pay

Fees: None

Transaction limits: $10,000 maximum over seven-day period, subject to bank limits

Transfer time: Instant for Apple Pay users

Apple Pay allows you to send money to family and friends inside Messages or using Siri on your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch. There is no extra app to download to access this service. Payments are instant. Unfortunately, Android users are out of luck, as are those with some older Apple devices.

You’ll need to link a debit card to Apple Pay to use the service. Users must be 18 years or older and U.S. citizens to send or receive money through Apple Pay. Green Dot Bank provides the services.

Money sent to other people goes to their Apple Cash account, where they can use it directly or transfer to a bank account or Visa debit card.

7. Facebook Messenger

Fees: None

Transaction limits: Subject to bank limits

Transfer time: Three to five business days

Not only is Facebook one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, but it’s also another way to send money to family and friends. You can send money to people easily through Facebook Messenger. Just start a message with whomever you want to send money. Click the plus sign and then the dollar sign, and enter the amount to send. Then, click “Pay” to send the money.

Facebook users can send money through the Messenger app or by logging in to their online accounts. Both parties need an active Facebook account and to have a debit card or PayPal account attached to their Facebook account. Facebook accepts Visa or Mastercard debit cards from a U.S. bank. You must also be at least 18 years old and live in the U.S.

8. Western Union

Fees: Fees based on multiple factors

Transaction limits: Limits based on various factors, including location, service and payment method

Transfer time: Instant with the mobile money transfer option

Western Union is the oldest company on this list—it’s been around since the 1800s. Most people don’t think of Western Union as a fintech company, but they’ve been helping people send money worldwide electronically since 1871.

Western Union offers multiple ways to send money to family and friends, including online, through its mobile app, in person at a Western Union office, over the phone and at select retail locations. There are options to use cash, a debit card or a credit card to send money, depending on how you send it. You can send money to a bank account, a mobile wallet or to a location for a cash pickup.

You must be 18 years or older to send or receive money through Western Union. Western Union’s transfer options are a viable option from a long-trusted company.

Other Ways to Send Money to Family and Friends

Mobile apps and online payment companies aren’t the only way to send money to your loved ones. Here are a few other options to consider:

  • Wire transfer. Most banks, credit unions and other financial institutions offer wire transfers. You may have to pay a fee to send or receive a wire transfer, depending on your bank.
  • Gift cards. Prepaid gift cards act as a debit card in many ways. Some gift cards have restrictions on where and how you can use them.
  • Cash. Cash is an excellent option, but it’s not the best form of payment to send by mail.
  • Check. You also can write a check and send it to family and friends by mail.

Tips for Sending Money to Family and Friends

Stay Safe

Safety and security are always concerns when dealing with money. Make sure any payment site you use is secure and that your bank and personal information is encrypted. Also, find out if the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) insures the money you send. If the payment app or site requires a password, make sure you use a strong password.

Know the People You Send Money

Payment apps usually offer options to make payments, but it’s best to limit your usage to sending or receiving money from people you know.

Keep Records

Keep track of any money you send to loved ones. Verify that they received the money and were able to access it. If you run into any issues, you’ll have the information on hand to deal with it properly.

Bottom Line

Sending money to loved ones is more convenient than ever before. In most cases, you can send money instantly for free. Ensure you are comfortable with whatever service you choose, once you’ve reviewed any fine print for fees or other important information.

Not even a 1 star! I have had my car paid off for a month and there was an over payment of over $2000. At first (by several suntrust bank customer service phone number hours people) I was told it would take 18 days after the payment posted for them to send me my refund then when I call after it should of been mailed out I am told it is 18 days after the title is released which was the day before I called. Now if it were them they would either turn me over or come get my car but since they own me money they want to take forever. This is not good business by no means. I would definitely recommend to anyone I know or asked me to never go with this company!!1

My vehicle was taken from an accident to a towing highlands union bank banner elk yard. I released the vehicle to my insurance company for adjuster review & vehicle repair. I went online to make my monthly Ally payment and was directed to Customer Service. Ally was notified of the accident and somehow accidentally tagged my vehicle as a voluntary repossession; demanded I make a cash payment in person at a Walmart to ‘release’ my car from repo status. What??!! Over a period of 2 HOURS, I talked to Customer Service, Collections Dept, Repo Dept & Redemption Dept then back to Customer Service. Then several more phone calls to Customer Service as well as my insurance company which Ally blamed. I phone conferenced Ally with my insurance adjuster on the line & after 41 minutes, their representative apologized while asking me again to make a cash payment to correct THEIR mistake. So not only am I inconvenienced but I could not even speak with a supervisor to voice my concerns (even though I could hear the supervisor obviously directing the rep in the background). Absolute madness. I gave this review 1-star because ‘No-star’ was not an option. I would not have even known this situation existed if I hadn’t gone to the website. And even when given the opportunity several times to redeem itself, Ally’s Customer Service failed to ‘do the right thing’ by rectifying the situation without causing further grief & inconvenience.

Called for a payoff on my truck, gave me the exact payoff for that day and the amount if I paid it off within 10 days. Went online paid that amount. I printed out the payoff and now they say I still owe, because the payment is due on the 24th of January. I made the payoff on December 27th. RIPOFF PEOPLE!

Due to a fraudulent transaction on my online savings account, Ally Bank closed all my accounts and opened new accounts. For several days I have contacted their Loss Prevention department who handles these new accounts to do the necessary transfers from the old compromised accounts into the new accounts but to no avail.
Every time I call them, there is no one to help and I have set up 3 call backs at specific times to call me and no one ever calls back. This is very time consuming and frustrating and Exceptional bad customer service.

I refinanced my car with another bank. I never got my title. I got a blue envelope, but in it, was a letter that said you would send my title. I tried calling for about 6 weeks. So many times I was transferred and put on hold for over 30 minutes. Finally, After I got someone that knows GA law to call, I found out that you sent my title to the wrong address. My PO Box is 2097, you sent to 2091. Then the lady told me that the other bank was the one that requested it to be sent there and the address was hard to read because it was hand written, so basically you guessed. I would think that since you got a check for over $20,000, you could have called to verify the address If you couldn’t read it. And why would you send a letter to my house telling me you were sending the title, but not to where you were sending? Now I have to get a replacement title which will take away from the value of my vehicle. This whole mess could have been avoided if I knew you had the wrong address.

I signed up for a 1 year CD, which offered a 1% bonus incentive, payable after several months wait. Even though their customer service admits I signed up during the enrollment period, I did not do it "correctly" so they are denying my bonus. While carefully following all directions and starting all registrations from provided links, I was expected to know I did it wrong. The customer "representative" only said "NO" and made no attempt to advocate for me or mitigate what was obviously their error.

I am a cosigner on an account. I did not receive letters stating the loan was in default, and I did not receive a repossession warning. If I had, I would have brought the loan current immediately.

I called this morning and was transferred from department to department trying to obtain copies of the supposed letters and a collections contact history. Only to be put through to a voice mail for Tamera in the customer service department after two hours of trying.

I am requesting a call back at 802-391-7551.

To whom it may concern,
I have been a valued customer and have always made my payments on time. I am extremely frustrated, and thank you for the opportunity to tell you why. I requested a REWRITE on 3/19 and still have not heard back. I was told 1-2 business days and it has been 2 weeks. I have messaged online and received a automated message to call the financial dept.(twice.) and was on hold for an hour and a half. When someone finally came on, and I mentioned my hold, she hung up on me. I then called the main line for Ally and was told a supervisor would contact me.that never happened. This is unacceptable and I want to know what can be done. I contacted chat support once more today, and spoke to Imee, she spoke to her Team LeaderHere (initial 2SJ/SUP/663.) and I was told that they would email the rewrite team, but that has already been done. My time is valuable, and I am puzzled as to why it is so difficult for my request to be handled. I would like to be contacted 209-480-4317.

Thank you,
Jason Hale

Name: Jean Etienne
SS# 033-92-1023
RE: Account Number: 2135310965

On 03/01/2019, I contacted customer service via both the online chat, and the toll free number to report a problem with setting up a Zelle payment. This issue dates back to July of 2018, when I first discovered it, and subsequently reported it to Ally bank who than informed me of having resolved the issue. However, the problem was never resolved, and remains outstanding to date.

On 03/02/2019, I conducted another chat session where the representative was able to assist me in initiating the Zelle payment. Subsequent to that, I received a message requesting for me to Ally bank to verify the payment recipient, and upon contacting the the toll free number, I inadvertently provided the wrong user ID to the representative who used that as a basis to report in his notes that he did not believe that he was speaking to me the account holder despite the fact that I provided every other pertinent information that squarely established my identity. The representative name Stephen from the Fraud department then informed me to email a photo ID to verify my identity and advised me further that he would review the document and release my account within twenty minutes of receipt of my email. An hour later, I contacted Ally bank and spoke to Khadejah from the Fraud department, and she informed me that my immigration work permit was insufficient because it is expired. I then informed her that per USCIS' instructions on their website, the work permit has been extended since the federal government has placed a moratorium on renewal of all temporary protected statuses. I further advised Khadejah to go and research the issue herself so as to avoid making any further inflammatory accusations. At that point, she informed me that she did not "want my money, or had any intentions of taking and withholding my money." To which, I responded, that I already know that she can not, and did not understand why she felt the need to tell me so. Upon concluding our conversation, I again agreed to send in to Khadejah's attention, an updated and unexpired identification, and subsequently emailed an unexpired Massachusetts state identification card, which Khadejah's supervisor confirmed receipt of on the following day and decided reassign the case to Khadejah, and to have her rectify the situation before the end of the day on 03/03/2019. That was not done as had been indicated by Khadejah's supervisor.

On 03/04/2019, I contacted Ally bank again only to find out that the case was reassigned to another worker base in part, on the complaint that I had made to her boss. On 03/06/2019, I contacted Ally to inquire about the status of the verification of my identification amazon volume hiring, and was told that the back office was still reviewing the matter despite the fact that lafayette bank and trust brookston had been well past the two to three days that it would supposedly take to review my ID and cure the manufactured issues with my account.

Additionally, on 03/02/2019 I initiated a link between Ally and my Discover Bank savings account, and requested the transfer of $120 from my Ally account to the Discover account. My request was subsequently denied by Ally Bank despite assurances from a supervisor that all funds ($120) that was in the account prior to the dispute would not be subjected to the account hold. Consequently, and as a direct consequence to Ally bank's failures and repeated conflicting information, all capabilities relative to transfer to and from my Discover Bank account has been suspended.

Here we are today 03/07/2019, the issues remains unresolved with no clear indication as to what is happening, or a good faith effort on Ally's part to address the gross negligence, and slanderous conduct of its employees.

Consequently, I request that the appropriate person(s) with the authority to do so, to investigate this matter, mobile woodforest online banking to release my above-mentioned savings account as soon as possible. I have also requested a case to that effect with the executive branch and the case reference# 20328776.

Thank you

The Ally Bank Deposit Agreement that is located on the Ally web page on page 8 states the Deposit should be in my checking account by 5 pm 2-26-2019. Where is my deposit? I sent a deposit slip that is filled out, and a note requesting the deposit be made and dated.
I am not attaching any images because if the mail was picked up they will have everything they need.

I called Ally bank to get my account back from suspension because I accidentally entered my transfer backwards. My transfers were suspended for 2 months and I wanted to speak to someone to see if this could be fixed because I transfer every month. I was put on hold for 1 hour, then was rudely told to contact my other bank and resolve the issue by a certain Amanda who would not give me her last name or identity number to file a complaint. She was laughing that I was on hold for a long time, as soon as I told here I was going to file a complaint, less than 1 minute later someone was graciously available to speak to me. The second customer attendant because service was not provided, I asked here for Amanda's # or last name and she would also not give it to me, until after another hold for another 10 minutes, the new attendant was willing to give me Amanda's last name but why didn't Amanda do it. So my account is still suspended and I AM THE CUSTOMER WHO DIDN'T GET ANY HELP FROM YOUR CUSTOMER ATTENDANTS BECAUSE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS NON EXTINCT IN ALLY BANK.

On January 11 I sent a check for 20,000 to be deposited in my online savings account. I made the mistake of putting the number of my wife’s Ira on the check. Ally contacted us and said that they couldn’t deposit the check in her Ira. I apologized and told them to deposit the check in my savings account. When I followed up to make sure the problem had been straightened out i was informed that the money had been deposited in my wife’s Ira. This was on January 24 and the representative Debbie said that it was noted that I requested the money to be deposited in my savings before it was deposited in my wife’s Ira. She apologized for Ally’s mistake and said the matter was resolved. because l was concerned about the tax ramifications she said that she spoke with Jay in the ira department and he said that they would note it as a bank mistake. On January 28 I was notified that my wife had to request an Ira withdrawal in order to get the money and redeposit it. I don’t believe this matter has been properly handled and concerned about the irs outlook on this matter. Sincerely, Bill Knott. 908-217-6588

I would not advise anyone to do business with your bank. What is your position regarding this transaction?

I usually call each month and pay my bill with direct deposit from my checking account. The amount is $30.55 and when I called I was cut off "can't accept my call because amount is too low"???? Are you all going mad?? What is the problem?? I now sent a check via mail which is due by the way 12/10/18. I always pay early but I did not know about this. I most likely will cancel my card with you after this. I guess you don't want any customers. I do have other cards and most of the time pay early. I guess you like late payments for profit. I am very disappointed in this bank at this moment.
Thank you

Please know this is a formal complaint. I am writing you because of my sheer disgust in how I am being cheated by Ally Auto. It is my hope that someone here in the US can get this matter under control now. When I purchased the car In September 2017 I was supposed to begin payments in November 2017. However, I started to pay in October 2017. My payments are due on the 29th of each month and late payment charges are which are only about 16.00 are not to begin until the 10th day after the due date. I have paid more than the amount I was supposed to pay each month but, yet I keep getting charged a 75.00 late fee. I don’t owe a late fee and the late charges are not 75.00 per month. I need someone to straighten this out before I make another payment. I called to complain over and over finally, a Chris in your escalation department somehow got the late chare taken off for September only to be placed on my account for the October 2018 due date. This is ridiculous. Also, I don’t know what country your representatives are in, but I can tell you they are liars and they are rude. Again, with the escalation department I spoke to a woman who said her name was Patrin on 10/11/2018, she just kept repeating that I owe a 75.00 late charge and I kept telling her I did not. When I asked to speak to someone in the US she told me that the US office did not have the power she had, but that she would put me through to the US office. She placed me on hold and never came back. I am not paying a 75.00 late charge I don’t owe. Before I report this to the BBB, please have this straightened out and the funds I have paid to your company appropriately placed to my account. I have the statements that clearly indicate I should have started to pay my account beginning 11/2017.

I have been trying feverishly to get a form filled out from Ally. I have spent hours on hold, given wrong contact names and phone numbers. I had a vehicle loan several years ago, there is an insurance claim check that I never cashed. The insurance company turned it over to the State of Illinois unclaimed property. This check is my property. Ally has sent me a lien release letter, however the State of Illinois will not accept it, as they want their own General Release for filled out before they will release the funds to me. I have had a horrible time getting this done. Again long hold times, repeating myself over and over, been given wrong contact names and phone numbers. I don't understand why this has to be so hard. My vehicle was taken from an accident to a towing service yard. I released the vehicle to my insurance company for adjuster review & vehicle repair. I went online to make my monthly Ally payment and was directed to Customer Service. Ally was notified of the accident and somehow accidentally tagged my vehicle as a voluntary repossession; demanded I make a cash payment in person at a Walmart to ‘release’ my south dakota state vs university of south dakota from repo status.

I refinanced my car with another bank. I never got my title. I got a blue envelope, but in it, was pay mesa water bill online letter that said you would send my title.

RE: Account Number: 2135310965

On 03/01/2019, I contacted customer service via both the online chat, and the toll free number to report a problem with setting up a Zelle payment. This issue dates back to July of 2018, when I first discovered it, and subsequently reported ally auto payment through western union to Ally bank who than informed me of having resolved the issue.

On 03/06/2019, I contacted Ally to inquire about the status of the verification of my identification card, and was told that the back office was still reviewing the matter despite the fact that it had been well past the two to three days that it would supposedly take to review my ID and cure the manufactured issues with my account.

Consequently, I request that the appropriate person(s) with the authority to do so, to investigate this matter, and to release my above-mentioned savings account as soon as possible. I have also requested a case to that effect with the executive branch and the case reference# 20328776.

Thank you

I closed out a jumbo matured CD on December 23, 2018 and did not receive my check until January 7, 2019.
A large amount of interest was lost. The check was dated Dec. 24 but not mailed by your carrier (FIS output solutions until Dec, 29th). It took another week because of their incorrect presort system.
I would not advise anyone to do business with your bank. What is your position regarding this transaction?

My car was towed and dragged for almost 3 blocks with the emergency break on which caused my back tires to feather. I have called and left messages numerous times, but have not spoke with anyone as of yet. I also sent e-mail with pictures and video and no one has responded back this way either. Please e-mail me or call me 708-334-6490.

Americas card room blitz most likely will cancel my card with you after this.

I deposited a check and for whatever reason have since been locked out of my account.I've spoke to loss prevention several times and he keeps saying theyre waiting for the check to clear even though it already says the funds are available at every ATM I've checkedbut when I try to pull money or make a purchase it say invalid account and declines.it's been two and a half weeks now and I know for a fact the law says a bank can't hold a check longer then 9days. So I've contacted the consumer protection agency and am meeting with a lawyer Monday morning to file a suite based on the hardships no access to my money has caused as well as the racially motivated closing of my account and unwillingness to provide any info or service Everytime I've called

Someone just do their job!!!!!

Ally repossess my car after telling me to make a payment of $600 and start a payment plan, that was on a Monday. the next thing i know a tow truck was in front of my home picking up my car that was on a Thursday, the payment was due the next day on a Friday. When I went to pick up my car from the repo company, my car was damage and items was missing. I call Ally to complaint I didn't get a response from customers service, also the company ally use to tow my car drove it, my miles on the odometer before it was tow read 150,000 after I pick it up from the repo company it read 156,000. I believe that Ally and the repo company should pay me for damages and items being remove from my car.

on 8-28 2017 i personally authorized ally to take from my checking account money to bring my account up to date. the money was not to be taken out until 9-1-2017. it was taken on the 28th therefore causing my checking account to be overdrawn. i have tried on the 30th of august to speak to someone at the bank which refered me to western union. they inform me it is not their fault, but ally bank is to blame. i will be filing a complaint with the federal govt concerning these practices. jerry orick acct 628925025806 also this has hurt my credit. in july of 25 2017 i also was contacted over the phone for a pmt which i authiorized for 8-1-2017 to be taken and it never was therefore putting my loan in default. your bank should get their act together. i will file my complaint and go on social media concerning your practices.

It is appalling to witness your employee Ismail and Branch Manger represent your company in such a manner stating that my documentation were fake. The Branch Manager contact the legal department of the back and they asked her or Ismail to scan the documentation to the legal department and the legal department stating that the documentation were fine. I was shocked and disappointed to have been treated in this way you should be made aware of your employee's action.

I would advise everyone, don't trust your money with theses people.

I am very upset with this bank's service and I am irate about the unexpected fees I now have to pay due to this matter. How do you advise I respond to this issue? I am interested in the response I will receive. Thanks for your time. Sincerely,

I don't know how this company stays in business when you can't get a human being on the phone, much less one that speaks English, to take your payment. I was on the phone with them over 2 hours this morning trying to make a truck payment and when I finally did get someone to talk to I couldn't understand them and they couldn't what is my 53 bank routing number me.

After making the payment and calling to verify it, I am now being told that instead of 24-48 hours, it will be 10 days taj mahal love theme in the key of d to clear the payment and 2-3 business days to process the paperwork.then we get to wait for the lien release/cleared title. One woman said they electronically send the lien release to the DMV, which is what the site says they do, the other two I spoke with said they mail it out to us in 3-5 business days. All together, we either get it in a few days or a month.huge difference.

Now DO YOUR JOB and fix your mistake so I can buy my south central bank routing number and never use your services again!!

But I couldn't understand why he had some "chick" send me a letter all i want for christmas is you original version lyrics was "notarized" and with NO TITLE for her position with the company.

They said they could put feb payment at the end ally auto payment through western union my loan and also I could break up march pymt in two months( half in march and the other half in april) then pay normal payments starting may. I finally got someone who helped me said he fixed it and I'm all ok. Well bill collections called that night and every day and all were rude and couldn't communicate. Instead if helping they just kept saying" this is what the computer telling me, u are past due for march payment". Over and over. I kept begging for them to help me cuz I don't know what to do. This happened again and I asked why it went to collections. After rude ppl hanging up on me I kept calling back til I found someone who cared and said its out of collections now and he sees what was set up and he would fix it for me. So I went to make my pymt last night and was told that I was to have made 2 pymts in march. Then if your employees cannot understand how to do their job bc they are over sea employees then it is not ally auto payment through western union responsibility to fix their error and magically come up with the money to change our arrangement!! And if u are paying over sea ppl to do this work u are making millions by not having to pay them rbc capital markets healthcare that u can easily just stick to the arrangement I was told and work with me, and ethically u should since it was an error on your end. I am not trained to know how u do pymt arrangements so that is why I called to get help so I could get all caught up and my finances in order. Now I'm told my only options are to stay 30 days behind until July when I will qualify for another extension and then can extend that payment or magically pay houston police federal credit union routing number month they say I'm behind bc their employee gave me an arrangement that is not an option in the way they do business.

(It takes me back tarrant county southwest courthouse my professor in college, to create confusion is a great opportunity to make a lot of money).

I just had a lesson learned with Ally Bank. She answered all of the questions right as I was on the first national bank bemidji online yet the girl stated one or more of the answers were wrong & she could let us even ask questions.

The month of June and July. I only owed $94.15, I Received a call since the 20th of June telling me. I owe June payment. To my knowledge I was told my payment wasn't due untIl October. I spoke to Audrina today at 3:06p.m, I spoke to a supervisor/ June at 3:28p.m,I spoke to Suzy/ 4:04p.m. Those three individuals was so rude and disrespectful, I spoke with mikaee today at 4:35p.m. Mikaee was the only individual today the spoke very intellengently. Ally Financial

American financial services company

Ally Financial is a bank holding company organized in Delaware and headquartered in Detroit, Michigan. The company provides financial services including car finance, online banking via a direct bank, corporate lending, vehicle insurance, mortgage loans, and an electronic trading platform to tradefinancial assets.

Ally is one of the largest car finance companies in the U.S., providing car financing and leasing for 4.5 million customers and originating 1.4 million car loans annually. It is on the list of largest banks in the United States by assets and has 2.0 million depositors.[2] Its electronic trading platform has approximately 350,000 funded accounts.[1] Via its SmartAuction online marketplace for auto auctions, launched in 2000, the company has sold more than 5 million vehicles, including 270,000 vehicles sold in 2019.[1][3]

The company was known as GMAC, an acronym for General Motors Acceptance Corporation, until 2010.[4]

History[edit]

The company was founded in 1919 by General Motors (GM) as the General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC) to provide financing to automotive customers.[5] In 1939, the company founded Motors Insurance Corporation and entered the vehicle insurance market.[6]

In 1985, while GM was under the leadership of Roger Smith, who sought to diversify the company, GMAC formed GMAC Mortgage and acquired Colonial Mortgage as well as the servicing arm of Norwest Mortgage, which included an $11 billion mortgage portfolio.[7]

In 1991, the company was forced to write-off $275 million in bad debt as part of a $436 million loss suffered from fraud committed by John McNamara, who ran a Ponzi scheme.[8]

In 1998, the company formed GMAC Real Estate.[6] In 1999, GMAC Mortgage acquired Ditech.[9] In 2000, the company formed GMAC Bank, a direct bank.[6] In 2005, the company formed GMAC ResCap as a holding company for its mortgage operations.[6]

In 2006, General Motors sold a 51% interest in GMAC to Cerberus Capital Management, a private equity firm. Also that year, GMAC sold a controlling interest of GMAC Commercial Holdings (its real estate division renamed Capmark) to Goldman Sachs, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, and Five Mile Capital Partners.[10]GMAC Real Estate was sold to Brookfield Asset Management. In 2009, Capmark filed for bankruptcy and its North American loan origination and servicing business was acquired by Berkadia, a joint venture of Leucadia National and Berkshire Hathaway.[11]

On December 24, 2008, the Federal Reserve accepted the company's application to become a bank holding company.[12] In January 2009, the company closed Nuvell Financial Services, its subprime lending division.[13][14]

As a result of losses in GMAC ResCap, the United States Department of the Treasury invested $17.2 billion in the company in 2008–2009. The Treasury sold its last stake in the company in 2014, recovering $19.6 billion from its $17.2 billion investment.[15]

In May 2009 GMAC Bank was rebranded as Ally Bank.[16] In May 2010, GMAC re-branded itself as Ally Financial.[4] In September 2010, the company sold its resort finance business to Centerbridge Partners. In 2012, the company sold its Canadian banking operations to Royal Bank of Canada for $3.8 billion.[17] In April 2014, it became a public company via an initial public offering.[18] In 2015, it moved its headquarters to One Detroit Center, which was subsequently renamed Ally Detroit Center.[19] In June 2016, the company acquired TradeKing, a stockbrokerage, for $275 million, which was re-branded as Ally Invest.[20]

In May 2016, Ally Bank re-entered the mortgage business with the launch of its direct-to-consumer offering called Ally Home.[21] In April 2019, Ally Home partnered with Better.com to launch a digital mortgage platform.[22]

In 2016, the company moved more than 1,500 employees to 13 floors of Ally Detroit Center.[23] In 2017, Ally signed a lease for 400,000 square feet at the Ally Charlotte Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, scheduled to be completed in 2021, and will move its offices from 440 South Church.[24]

[edit]

The company sponsors the Miami International Auto Show,[25] the Time Dealer of the Year award,[26] and The Ally Challenge.

In 2019, Ally became the primary sponsor for seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson at Hendrick Motorsports, a sponsorship that runs through 2023.[27][28] As GMAC, the company previously had primary sponsorships with Hendrick Motorsports from 1998 through 2007 with drivers Jack Sprague, Ricky Hendrick, Brian Vickers and Casey Mears, including Vickers' 2003 NASCAR Busch Series championship victory.[29]Alex Bowman took over the No. 48 Ally Chevrolet in 2021 after Johnson transitioned from NASCAR to the IndyCar Series;[30] before the season began, Ally also acquired the naming rights to the Cup Series' race at Nashville Superspeedway to name it the Ally 400.[31]

Ally is also a sponsor of the National Women's Soccer League and of a team in Major League Soccer, Charlotte FC.[32][33]

In 2021, Ally continued to sponsor Jimmie Johnson in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship with his No.48 Cadillac DPi-V.R entry in IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup rounds alongside Kamui Kobayashi and Simon Pagenaud. Also, Mike Rockenfeller joined the team for Rolex 24 at Daytona.[34]

Legal issues[edit]

2013 discrimination settlement[edit]

In December 2013, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and United States Department of Justice ordered the company to pay $80 million in consumer monetary damages and $18 million in civil penalties after determining that 235,000 minority borrowers paid higher interest rates for auto loans originated between April 2011 and December 2013 because of the company's discriminatory pricing system. The higher rates resulted from the company's specific policy of allowing dealers to charge, at their discretion, a "dealer markup" above Ally's established "buy rate" and then compensating dealers based on the markup. Ally provided an incentive for dealers to charge higher rates, which disproportionately affected minority borrowers, in violation of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act.[35][36]
