Walmart Will Trade You for Other Merchants' Gift Cards

Don't worry if you don't like some of the gift cards you receive this Christmas. The AP reports that Walmart will trade store credit for gift cards from more than 200 different retailers, restaurants, and airlines.

Beginning on Christmas day, shoppers can trade in any eligible gift card for a Walmart gift card of similar value. How much you get depends on what kind of card you're trading in. An Amazon card will fetch 95% of its value, a Gap card will be worth 85%, and some cards will be matched with just 70% of their original value. The exchange program is being done in partnership with CardCash, the largest platform for buying and selling gift cards. Walmart says this exchange is a test but could be made permanent if there is heavy demand.

To exchange their gift cards, shoppers don't even need to leave the house. Walmart's card exchange website, Walmart.CardCash.com, lets users input their gift card's information, and a Walmart gift card will be emailed to them once the original card's balance is verified.

The motivation for Walmart's gift exchange is probably to increase store traffic, but there are many reasons retailers love getting their gift cards into the hands of shoppers. As Money's Kara Brandeisky points out, shoppers are likely to overspend when given what seems like fake money. In addition, researchers have found that consumers buy items they don't need when they use a stored-value certificate; the CEB TowerGroup consultancy has found that 65% of gift card users spend 38% more than the face value of the card.

The CEB also reported that customers tend to forget about their gift cards and don't spend the full balance, resulting in more than $1 billion in unused store credit this year alone. But that appears to be less true in the case of Walmart: A company spokesperson told the AP that 95% of Walmart holiday gift cards are usually redeemed by February.

Walmart Car Seat Trade In Details

Walmart’s first ever car seat trade-in program happened September 16th - 30th, 2019, and they are gearing up for another, due to the overwhelming response at their last car seat recycling program, where they reached capacity in less than a week! Walmart collected nearly one million car seats, which is the equivalent of diverting over 200 million plastic bottles from landfills, according to their partner, TerraCycle.

Walmart teamed up with TerraCycle to recycle used car seats. The extra $30 Walmart gift card is definitely a bonus, but you can also feel good knowing that your car seat is avoiding landfills.

Here’s How It Works

  1. Find a participating Walmart Store - a super fast search will show you all local stores accepting car seat trade ins.
  2. Bring your seat to the Customer Service Desk to be recycled
  3. Receive a $30 Walmart Gift Card that can be used in store or online.

It’s really that simple! Many Walmart locations will also be hosting free events in honor of National Baby Safety Month, although it's definitely possible that these events will be virtual for the time being, as long as COVID-19 is still in our midst. In the past we saw everything from diaper challenges to stroller testing, and we are excited to see what they offer next. Although we hope the COVID pandemic will finally have passed by the next car seat recycling event, whatever the format, these informative and fun events are a great way for parents to learn more about their child’s safety and test out the latest gear.

For additional details, check out the Walmart event page. If you aren’t sure when your child’s car seat expires, now is a great time to find out!

Target Jumps On Gift Card Exchange Bandwagon; Offers Customers Less Than Cards Are Worth

With the bulk of the holiday celebrations having come and gone, you might be sitting around the dried-out Christmas tree counting up all those random gift cards you received. While you appreciate the generosity of your friends and family, you just don’t have any desire to make a purchase with said cards. To that end, a number of retailers are willing to offer you a trade; joining the ranks of Walmart, GameStop, and Coinstar this year is Target.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports that Target will offer a year-round gift card trade-in program in about 1,500 stores.

The program, which started last month, is similar to Walmart’s past initiative in that the company doesn’t offer to pay a customer the full value of the traded card.

Instead, once the card is brought to the mobile phone counter in the electronics department, an employee of Market Source — wearing a black shirt instead of the traditional Target red — will give customers an offer for a lesser amount based on the resale value of the card.

For example, the company says, a $100 Walmart gift card can be exchanged for an $85 Target gift card.

“We know guests sometimes have unwanted or unused gift cards and [we] want to give them a convenient option to put those unused dollars toward shopping at Target,” Kristy Welker, a Target spokeswoman, tells the Star Tribune.

The retailer declined to provide information on how much it makes through the exchange program, which is slated to run year round.

Target’s program is a partnership between the retailer, card exchange site Cardpool.com, and other vendors.
